Default DR1 camo streaking

What is the best method to apply the "streaking" on the Fokker triplane, the way the came out of the factory.I've heard of using a foam brush,it seem it would come out blotchy.Any advice would be helpful.-jeffo

I recently completed the Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale. I got a very good look by painting the entire surface with a base coat of light brown (Behr Mississippi Mud) and then dry brush the top with a color called Chocolate cupcake (also Behr). That is a Home Depot paint! It has the green in to match the origonal very well.
The Brush I use to dry brush is a "chip" brush. That is one of those that they have a big box of on the botom shelf at Lowes or Home Depot . Just watch for loose hairs getting in to your work. It is a very coarse hair brush and they sell very cheep.
The key is to work consistantly and patiently.
Good Luck!
Rich

Jeffo,
I will be doing the same thing here in a few weeks. My plan is to put down a base color of tan then streak with Olive Drab. The paint I will be using is latex. I have heard the best method is to use a 1" bristle brush and cut it down using pinking shears. You want to remove at least 1/2 the length of the bristles to make the brush stiffer.

I will be painting some test panels on drywall to practice the streaking on before moving to the plane.

Check in on the 1/3 GTM DRI build in the scale forum. there are some really good tips there for doing the streaking.
Later!!

I plan on thinning the paint. I will try to cover this in my DRI thread when I get to that point. It will be trial and error I am sure.

I used thinned acrylic laytex paint and a 2" foam brush to streak mine. Worked great

Hi Jeffo- I used butyrate dope and a cheap ~2" brush for 1/5 scale. I mixed olive drab and Miami blue 6:1 ratio then thinned it 50% with thinners. Who knows if this color is correct- I like it! Dip brush in dope ~1/2" then paint until the brush goes dry. Do not brush over areas you just painted. Keep doing this until you are done. The airplane was painted this way at the factory. The wings, ailerons, stab and elevators were all painted separately so the brush strokes should not match up. The fuse sides were painted with vertical (pretty much) brush strokes. The fuse top was painted at a slant starting top right and going down left. The wings were the same but the slant was almost vertical, maybe ~20 degrees. The ailerons had more 'slant' as evidenced by photos. Spin the wheels and start painting from rim toward hub. The stab was painted like the wings. I mixed a little forest green in light blue to give the paint a turquoise effect that varnish caused back then for the undersides. Note how the underside paint is 'returned' to the lower side of fuse and around the tail feathers. This is 'scale'. Here are some photos of two arf Drl's I changed extensively.

edit: Diana cream used as base coat before applying streaky finish.

The DRI is not a beginners model to build or especially fly. It is not a bad flying model but for an experienced pilot. The ground handleing is a bear. If you buy the plane shelve it until you get another kit or two under your belt and you can succesfully fly a low wing nitro plane with confidence.

Ground handling? There is no ground handling.I aim mine in the wind and go.Waco is spot on,get some experience under your belt.It flies like it looks, short coupled and draggy. It's not a difficult plane to fly,but you should join a club and get a good understanding about planes and there flying characteristics. You don't want your first flying experience to be a bad one.-jeffo

Here's a 'black and white' pic I created of my twins. The other is a true scale photo from an Osprey book that is easily grabbed from the internet.
