Default Nieuport 17 covering question

I'm just finishing my second scratch build. a 1/4 scale nieuport 17. From the pictures I've seen they look to be grey in color and being as I'm a novice in using fabric I was thinking of using ultracote in light grey. would this be an appropiate color for this model?
Thanks

Jeff

Hi Jeff

I'm a newbie to RC, but I've just discovered a "textured" a type of covering that comes in warbird colours (even matt finishes)
I've been told by a guy who's had a model shop for many years that the Scale building guys use it 'cos it looks like fabric
- I've seen and felt it and it really is fabric like. Its called SOLARTEX. I live in Australia and its available here not sure about availabilty in the US.

Look on the net for Vintage models and I'm sure that you will find authentic colour schemes for your Nieuport
Also try RCScalebuilder.com

Hope this is of use to you

Cheers

Most of the "OLD" rag wings (fabric covered) aircraft WERE painted silver. Silver is UV protectant paint, to help keep the sun from degrading the fabric.

Balsa USA sells Solartex, I've have it on my Pup for about 8 years now and it still looks pretty darn good. Solartex is easy to use, just follow the instructions. It bends around wing tips well, plus the adhesive is very good. It's not cheap, but it works very well. I would spray a light coat of Minwax "Satin" finish on all surfaces for easy clean up. All pics are of Ultracote.

Pics 1 &2 are lite gray (HANU882), midnight blue (HANU885), true red (HANU866), cub yellow (HANU884) and white (HANU870).
Pics 3 & 4 are silver (HANU881), midnight blue, bright yellow (HANU872) and true red.

Hope this helps in making your decision.

I've also use chrome (HANU886).

Any other type of iron on covering on a WWI plane is just wrong. Solartex comes in a lot of colors. True, a lot of them were painted silver but I have also seen a lot of them in the off white or natural. There are other types of fabric covering but to date I have never seen or used anything as good as the TEX covrings. After covering set the plane out in the hot sun so it sags then tighten it up again, do this several times until it no longer sags. Now you can leave your plane out in the hot sun without the covering ever getting loose.
TEX is very easy to use and paint, GOOD stuff!!!!!!!!

Yea
On and off and short log ons!! Can't sit at the puter long and my left hand doesn't work for typing too well. Even spent an hour or so in my shop yesterday. Then my wife woke up from her nap and noticed I was missing.
