Balsa USA 1/4 scale CUB Motor Size
I am curently Building a 1/4 Scale Balsa USA Cub and am having a hard time deciding on what to power it with..I want to use a gas engine..I was going to use a DLE 30 but my buddy just put one on his 1/4 scale ARF Cub and it is way over powered in my opinion..It is tearing the blind nuts etc out of the firewall after only three flights..I have a DLE 20 on a Seagull 120 spacewalker and I think that would be a better match..I might fly off floats so I dont want to under power either...I was thinking maybe the Zenoah G26 although I am not sure it has any more power than the DLE 20...I am fairly new to the gassers so any inputt will be apreciated...I mostly enjoy flying in a scale like manner..I like to be able to do loops and rolls and hammer heads but I am not expecting to hover or get unlimited vertical etc..I have a 1/3 scale BUSA Cub on floats with a G62 in it and it is a very good match...I would like a similar match for my 1/4 scale Cub..Thanks Ken

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 scale CUB Motor Size
I powered my Balsa USA Cub with a OS 91FS on C&H ignition. I loved the realism and sound.
Today, I've a Balsa USA L-4 bare bones waiting for me to finish it off. I still have the OS 91 but it's in a Stearman. I may power it with an OS 120 on glow. I'm not a fan of gassers at all as the odor and noise puts me off a bit.
Hope this gets you started.

Thank you for your replys..I am only looking for gas motors..I want the economy..I have several glow engines that would do the job and I do agree that the sound of a four stroke would be nice ,especially a twin but I want to try a gas...I dont think they make a four stroke gas motor.that would be nice..I really dont like the sound of the two stroke gas..They are loud and smelly but they run forever on a tank of gas and the gas is cheap compared to glow fuel...

There are a few 4 stroke gassers, most are European & terribly dear.
The Chinese are just starting to get into that area, the second version of the NGH38 4 stroke is out now.

I would wait for feedback on the new version before a purchase though, (hopefully they sorted out the problems)
There is a thread on it here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11...mpage_2/tm.htm

One of my favorite motors is a Zenoah 20. All of them run really good. The 20 will fly your Cub but I would go with the Zenoah 26. I own a 26, electronic ignition, and it is flawless.
I dont want to debate motor brands but I will say, in my opinion, Zenoahs are some of the most reliable and smooth running motors. Once the motor is broken in and the needles are set you are in for a lifetime of use. I also own a DA50 it runs good, just not as perfect as my Zenoahs.

The white N numbers below the horizontal stab are decals, everything else is paint.

Not too much power but way too much weight and bulk. If going gas I would use one of the more modern, compact and lighter weight engines available these days. The DLE 20, 30 or 35 are common examples and all fit with ease though you will have to relocate the firewall back a bit. Weight is about right for normal balance.

A G20 is plenty of scale power, if you can find one. G26 is perfect, turn a scale diameter prop (18"). Anything larger is more power than needed for scale flight. This plane has a ton of wing and doesn't need much to keep it in the air. The smaller scales will fly on practically nothing. I flew my 1/5 scale L-4 on a .65 Saito and it was more than needed. A .56 is sufficient.
S3nfo and Jerry, what did you use to convert the BUSA J-3 to a L-4? Did you use pictures and work out your own conversion for the greenhouse, or did you go by the L-4 conversion plans from BUSA? I haven't built or flown anything in ten years and sold all my gear and built planes. I still have a 1/4 scale BUSA J-3 kit that is over 20 years old, and I have the L-4 conversion plans that BUSA had available. I also have the 1/4 scale Robart gear, a fiberglass cowl and dummy engine kit. Now that I'm retired, I've been thinking about dragging this out and building it, super detailing it. I have over 100 pictures of Cubs and L-4 details, many from the restored planes shown at Oshkosh over the years.
I once built a 1/5 scale Sig J-3 kit and converted it to a L-4, with the greenhouse and 1/5 scale Robart gear, and even made a couple of scale bazookas to mount on the wing struts. You can see pics in my gallery.

Cub
Perhaps its been mentioned and I missed it. The PERFECT engine for the 1/4 scale Cub is the OS Gemini 160.
Just abut to finish my 1/3 Cub, OS 320 Pegasus , perfect!

Perfect engine for a 1/4 scale Cub is a DLE-20 Completely enclosed and plenty of room for a Top Notch dummy Continental engine kit.
