Since the rudder has its own set of colors I decided to do that first. The initial layer of satin white Klass Kote is on. I've never painted with the satin component and it went on just as easy, if not slightly easier, than the gloss component.
Next Tuesday I should be able to put on the red.

Still chewing away at this one....
Rudder was covered and painted. Wanted to get back into the rhythm before going into the fuselage and wings. The remainder of the paint is on order with Klass Kote.
Today I made up some skid plates for the bottom of the lower wings. I did this on my cub and it has saved the covering / paint a few times.
Once the mounts for the skid plates are installed the wings will get final sanded and covered. Then a few minor things to the fuselage and on goes that covering.

Here are the wings skids.
While it is a small shame to need skids on those less than perfect landings sometimes the wings take a little scraping. I'd rather hit a replaceable skid than grind through the paint and covering, which is much more difficult to repair.
Simple blind nut mounting into the aileron.
The location was found by mounting the wings on the fuse and tipping the plane over until the wings hit... as it would on a ground loop. This plane happened to be on the aileron.

Yesterday I covered up the elevator / horizontal stab. Process with simple enough.
I think i will move onto the wings next. I just need to glue in a few blindnuts for the wingtip skids, do some final sanding, then covering can commence.

Try as you might sometimes things need a little adjustment to meet expectations. Today I tackled the final sanding on the top wing. I've never met anyone who can say they love sanding but at the end of the process there is a real sense of accomplishment. I have to constantly remind myself to take it slow and focus on the process.
There was some minor misalignment of the top sheeting where the two wing halves were joined. I decided the best way to blend the parts together was to fill the lower sheeting with some spackle. Not really sure where I learned to use this product but it sands very similar to balsa. I built up the layers and using a long sanding bar blended the two parts together. Once the center was more or less perfect I moved onto the wingtips.
Came out pretty good and is now ready for covering.

Bottom site of the bottom wing is covered. I should be able to get the top side and the ailerons done this coming Saturday. Then I'm painting the wings and the elevator.

Bottom wing, with exception of the ailerons and the servo hatches, is covered. Came out good. Will knock out the ailerons and hatches then paint.

Covered up the ailerons today. In a few minutes I will pull the servos off the wing hatches and cover those up. Weather permitting, I think i will try and spray the base color onto the bottom of the wings, elevator, and hatches tomorrow.
Of note, I noticed on my Sig Cub the aileron will have a slight ballooning effect when it is exposed to the sun. The covering and paint make the ailerons air tight causing this to happen. To resolve the issue, which can cause the covering to loosen over time, I put tiny brass tubes into one end of the aileron. The air in the aileron can escape / enter as needed via this tube. The third photo shows the location of the tube.

A quick question from a new guy if you don't mind. Looking at your aileron control horns I noticed the point where it connects to the aileron push rod doesn't seem to be over the hinge line. Maybe it's just the picture or maybe that's not necessary? I am building a plane now that also has the ailerons hinged at the top and consequently a very wide gap at the bottom. I can't find horns that bridge that gap. Hoping to hear it's not necessary. Beautiful work by the way. Thanks for the help

This is my third plane with the linkage in this exact same setup. The other two are Cubs.
Here are a few photos of my trial and error testing for the flaps on my cub, the final design, and the in flight proof of concept.
Hope this helps,

The offset linkage will actually induce some aileron differential, a desired movement of the ailerons. This is when the inside wing receives more drag than the outside wing, in a turn, correcting some adverse yaw. The aileron going up moves further than the aileron going down causing this effect.

On goes the bottom paint. Color is French Air Force Clear Doped (Tan for short).
As is always the case with Klass Kote Paint, there were no issues. The semi-gloss harder really makes painting easy. Almost no chance of runs. Just fog it on until there is a slight shine, and when it cures it goes flat.
Got the bottom of both wings, ailerons, aileron hatches, elevators, and horizontal stab painted with one measured cup of paint. I used every drop of the cup.
I am using a Sata MiniJet 4 Spray Gun. It is HVLP and doesn't waste a lot of paint. Two layers is all it took.
I don't have a fancy paint booth or anything, just using the side yard of my home.

Light green goes on. I used 1/8" 3M vinyl tape for the masking at the color change. Standard painters blue tape and paper were used inside the fine line tape. Next week will be the dark green and possibly the brown. Lots of colors to deal with!
