When I was young, my father told me that cheap tools are expensive. I didn't really get it at the time, but I sure learned the lesson down the road. That cheap band saw I bought cost me time, money, frustration, and I'll bet hair loss. Buy the best tool you can afford.
VJ, Looking great!

I am fortunate to see Vinnie's planes in person.  A guy at our club had a beautiful WW1 plane, that he spent 5 years building and it crashed on takeoff because of a servo failure.  I saw the servo and asked him what is was because I had never heard of it.  He said oh, something I had for a while! I could not believe that he would cheap out on this after all that work.

Hello VJ. I'm subscribed to your build. Love the great craftsmanship. Looks like you carved the fuse out of a soild pice of wood, great job. I know what your saying when it comes to tools. I have a Craftsman drill press and scroll saw. At the time, the price fit the budget and for now their ok but will get replaced when the budget permits, ummm, did I hear tax refund

Thanks for the clarification on the perimeter tape guys. BTW, I have a Craftsman drill press that is about 15 years old that has worked great, no complaints. What I really need is a nice metal cutting bandsaw. I have a Grizzly metal lathe that I am not overly happy with, its not bad, but under powered and a little cheap in some ways. But yes, good tools are a worthy investment in the long-term.

Maejku, that's what I did with part of my return! I also try to buy a new piece of equipment or tool for each new build. (getting ready for my nextbuild) The next twotools that I really want is a bandsaw and an ocillating spindle sander... I remembersomething that my grandmother used to say to me, "sometimes you have to spend money to save money", meaning don't buy cheap.

LOL, It won't fit in my shop!

While examining the near empty box that my Ryan came in I found this. A real nice touch that's missing today! Ya done good Doris, your OK in my book...

Just bought one of these that was partially built and set-up for an included 91 four stroke (NIB). The builder was kind enough to send me a link to this thread. I will read through this thread before I start building. I have already ordered the cowl and wheel pants from Fiberglass Specialties.

Here are some photos of what I've been working on today. Carefully fitting the plastic cowling that transitions the fin into the fuse as well as the dorsal fin. I still need to fit the plastic cowling on the left and right hand sides of the horizontal stabilizer.

That is nice VJ. I wonder how those of us without a kit will do without those plastic parts. You would think FS would have carried those as well. Hmmmmm, guess I will find out soon enough. The Ryan will be my next build. And I have a superb example to follow!

Thanks Robert. Depending on which Ryan you model you may not need all of the plastic pieces. After researching Ryans you would be amazed to find out how different each model is. For example if you choose to model N-48587, the pretty white/blue and gold Ryan on Kens CD, there isn't any cowling on the fin,but there is on mine. In any case they could be reproduced with a little imagination and time.

You will enjoy building this plane.

VJ, Robert,

The CD is mine (send me a PM or email for more info) and the White, Blue; Yellow ST (N 48587) is a converted ST-M with a Ranger 6 cylinder engine. Rivets on this version are mostly flush or are flat head screws on the fusalge sides and top. There are some domed riviets under the center section and on some other areas.

P1 - Port side view
P2 - Tail Group - it does not have the mini-fairings that VJ's Ryan has.
P3 - Elevator Gap - Huge. The rudder has the same gap. Also note that the rib tapes on the elevators are parallel to the centerline compared to the "W" pattern on VJ’s.

Looking good VJ,
It looks like you have a perfect fit of the fairings. Not an easy task I imagine.
Later!!

Thanks for sharing all the info so far. This is definitely a builders kit, a lot of detail if you care to take it to that level.

One side down and one side to go before the spray gun is fired up!

The first photo shows the fairing (PT-4)before I cut it fromits vacuum formed sheet. After some trimming the completed installation looks like this.

Thanks Tim. Since I have off all next week I'll probably paint the fuse on Monday, pending the weather of course.

Oooohhhhh, I would love to have a week off now but don't want to burn up the vacation time.
Can't wait to see the paint go down. Going to order my primer and paint this week. Keep dreading to see the total $$$.
Later!!

I have a rather broad background in spray painting but only using compressed air(I know, old school but I'm an old retired fart). Earlier on I noticed your spray equipment seemed airless and am curious if you have any experience using compressed air? If so, could you give me some pro's and con's?? I really don't want to switch but do believe you can teach an old dog...

I'm not sure I understand your question paddcat1. The equipment that I am using to spray my plane is run off an air compressor...

Sure is; thought it was airless. What kind of pressure do you use with your finish coats.

paddcat1, I'm using a SATA minijet HVLP spot repair gun that I have set for 29 psi. It was pricey, but it sure does a nice job of laying down paint with very little overspray.
