RE: Sig Ryan STA
Finally the time has come to cover the wing! Throughout this whole build the wing was the part that challenged me the most.
Looking at the wing, my first inclination was to coverit in two separate pieces one for the top and one for the bottom, but my insides was telling me that though possible it best be covered in four separate pieces because of the flying wire brackets. So committed to a plan I began by first cutting four small 1" squares of Solartexto go over the flying wirebrackets. I thought it wiser to have these under the covering should the larger top covering separate from the brackets edgeleaving an exposed area uncovered. Next was the inside corner of the aileron/flaparea followed by covering the small transition block that I carved.
Measuring the amount of covering thatI needed for one side of the wing and leaving about 2" extra for all sidesI cut it from the roll and tacked it down on all four corners with low heat. Once everything was tacked down I ran the iron over all of the edges before doing the center section. No heat gun was used nor should one be used with Solartex. Covering the wing tip was a breeze. Well that's enough work for tonight, tomorrow I'll do the other side...

Looking excellent! Never having used solartex, my assumption is that it works very well around corners looking at your wingtips, that or, as others have said, you just make it look easy.... which is very possible judging by the rest of your work. So which is it, is it easy to iron on & stretch or are you just as good as we think you are?
LOL. Great posts Vincent..........
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks Robert, Anthony ,David and Dave. I would like to tell you that it's me, but I would be lying, Solartex it very easy to manipulate. Wing tips which may have caused a lot of modelers grief in the past are super easy to get to look perfect. Wrinkles can easily be removed and all with the use of your iron. As David said, it is much easier to use than Ultra coat or Monokote...JMO
I'm excited to have my mother and sister come stay with me for the weekend so I may not get as much done on my Ryan as I had hoped, but I will try to sneak in the workshop and get some of this covering finished. My club's Show-N-Tell is April 3rd, so I am trying to get this Ryan near completed for this event.

Covered the other side of the bottom of the wing tonight. Won't bore you with the details as it's just repetative of what I covered yesterday. I will tell you as I am sitting here posting these photos I'm chuckling as I totally forgot to cut the servo arm openings in all the hatches, I'll have to strip the covering off of them and tend to that later. Gotta laugh cause I'm too tired to cry...
Oh nooo server message again....

Belive it or not I noticed that but thought maybe you decided to do internal linkages. But don't feel bad after reading one of your post of where you was putting blocks in I remembered I did not put the covering support blocks for the control rod in the top wing. Had to cut the covering and install them.

Ohhhhh! Now that's low man! But ya know what, bet I spent less money. I can build one plane every 2 to 3 years. Slow and steady saves money.
By the way, that fat portion of the wing is the trailing edge... right?
And speaking of wings, hows that one coming VJ? (How's that for a segue?)

Sorry I missed all the fun last night. I was so tired I went to bed pretty early.
David , the bottom of thewing is completed (minus the servo covers). I will post some photos as soon as RCU fixes thier server problem. I am happy with how it looks. I will start on the top this evening. I have 12 days to get this project near the finish line. Don't think I'll have time to paint the wing before the Show-N-Tell but I'm OK with that.
