Default Waco CG-4A non powered glider

Does anyone know how the Auto-Rudder works on this model. The rudder is connected to the towing hooks and the extend of the rudder movement is controled by two stops on the elevator.

I never used this but I remember reading about them... I may be all wet but I believe that when you put pressure on a towhook, i.e., when towing the plane, the rudder would be straight. Then, when you release the tow and the towhook could reposition itself (with no pressure on it now from the towline) the rudder would go to a position that would let it make gentle circles. This way, it would not fly away on you but rather would circle the launch area and make retrieval much easier.

Bob,

Thanks for the quick reply. It makes a lot of sence.

Does anyone remember towline gliders? I think I described it badly, but I'd love to make sure that I was giving a correct picture of what a towline glider towhook did to reposition the rudder...
