Default Bud Nosen Mr. Mulligan ....Another one...

Well after sitting on the short kit that I purchased from
Lazer-Works in Whicta Falls, Texas, I decided it was
time to get this build started. Eddie Taylor borrowed my
"Die-Crushed" AA Industries kit some time back and did
his magic and produced a first class rendition of the classic
Bud Nosen Mr. Mulligan, with a bunch of modern day upgrades
that the old kit was lacking. You will see some of these as I
go through the build. Laid the sticks down for the sides last
evening, will be posting pics as I go along. Power to be a 50cc
twin I purchased from LS Pro engines a couple of years ago.

This will really be fun to watch, and I am anxious to see the improved design areas as well.

Subscribed. I have a really old Nosen Mulligan that was given to me for fixing an engine. Its in pretty rough shape covered in silk and dope. I can just about fit two G-62s in that cowl.

Bill have you ever considered the Toni Clark gear reduction unit for a G38 in this plane? swing a 32/18 up there

Bill,

The classics of pre-Wold War II have always been my preferred models.
I built a rubber powered Mr. Mulligan years ago.

I will follow your build thread with great interest.

I would love to use the Toni Clark gear reduction one of these days but right now I am going with what I have
on hand. Might get around to doing a 1/3rd scale Mr. Mulligan some day, never know.

A friend built one of these a few years ago. He shortened the nose, and wing to scale and used a 3.7 D&B twin it. Excellant flyer.

I've subscribed and I'll follow this with interest.  I've got a Nosen Mr Miulligan in the box (Pre AA Industries).   I bought the Fiberglass Specialties long cowl as I'd not decided on an engine - all though I've got a couple of Super Tigre's, a NIB 3000 and a lightly used 3250 which I'd thought to use.  I've got a Ikon N'West Monocoupe D-145 about the same size that I'd bought one of the engines for.   I'd appreciate your emphasizing the upgrades as you go along.

Happy New Year Cliff & all............... The Super Tiger engines will pull the Mr. Mulligan with plenty of
authority, but you will need to keep it light. I have a ST-3250 which will pull like crazy on a 20-8 prop,
but it also slurps up the glow fuel at around 3 ounces a minute, so unless you install a very large tank
on the CG, flight times will be short. With the prices of the 50 cc gas engines, I would go that route
unless you are running on a budget like most of guys are in this day and time. BTW my ST-3250 ran
better on FAI fuel than it did on 15%.

Will be posting pics of the short kit contents this evening after work.

I'm looking forward to following this one!

I was also delighted to see that Wendell Hostetler recently created plans for a Mr. Mullgan. Some day I hope to build that one.
Best wishes

How is the Bud Nosen Mulligan holding up to that big gas engine? This plane was designed for a .60 back in the day (probably pretty marginally powered) but at least the engine was gentle to the plane.

That's one of the reasons I am interested in this build to see what reinforcement might be smart. I've got a couple of gas engines - a QuadraI think a 35 and a Tartan 44. One thing the Mulligan admits it the possibility of a big tank on the CG. My collection of engines and planes aren't necessarily optimally selected :-) Get a date from Harmony.com get a collection of antique models from e-bay :-) Regards Ido like these vintage jobs. Cliffc

Yea Dave, Wendell came out with the plans just a coupe of months ago, but I've had the laser cut kit for almost 2 years now so
I will be going with it, but might just have to see what Wendell's plans are like.........probably more scale than the Bud Nosen kit
is.

Well the photo shoot of the parts didn't go to well, as the memory card
seems to be corrupted, will get a new one today and try again this evening.

After a few anxious days I think the real problem was my computer that was
corrupting the card, so thanks to the Geek Squad the problem is now solved
and I have a portable card reader.

Stay tuned pics to follow, got to shrink them first............

I have a highly modified Ikon NW D-145 that I am just finishing. Its been in the bones stage for years partly because I enjoy looking at it in that stage of construction..... and partly because I got to lazy to finish it. Getting ready to cover it now ... painted parts are already complete. It has a Brison 2.4 gasser in it that should be good power for that plane.

I'd highly recommend against using either one of those ST engines. Some of the newer gas engines are so much more reliable and in general offer a much greater owner experience. I especially recommend against the 3000 as it was noted for being a real shaker with not great power. Remember too, on a gasser you can place the tank anywhere you want and don't have to stuff the tank in the nose.

The Nosen Mulligan looks much better with the nose shortened to scale length!

The first 4 pics are of the plywood parts, the 5th & 6th are of the cowl ring
in the cowl, a nice touch that Eddie added when he cut the kit, 7th-10th are
the balsa parts and 11th is cowl from Fiberglass Specialties & wheel pants
from Stan's Fibertech (Now Fiber Tech & More), 12th is the LS Pro 50cc twin
which will be the power source for this bird.

I'm in. I have a bud Nosen kit that I will be building. I also want to shorten the nose and wing to make it scale.
To make the Bud Nosen Mr.Mulligan scale, just shortening the nose and wingspan will make it look a bit closer
to scale proportionately but not near actual scale in its self. The nose would have to be 2 1/2" from the windshield
to the back edge of the cowl, the cowl would be 8" long and the wingspan would be 95". I have taken these
measurements from my 1/24th scale 3 views by Paul R. Matt.

For me to do this to the Lazer-Works short kit would mean recutting the key spacer between former #1 & #2,
something I don't think I will be doing, this is meant to be a "Sport Scale" model and not an all out "Scale Masters"
model. Even the wing aerofoil would have to be changed to make it closer to scale, thus the old saying "If it ain't
broke, don't fix it". As most that have built this kit will tell you that it is a great flying plane as is. But that is what this
great hobby is all about, creating something that is pleasing to your personal taste..............

One thing I will be doing is shortening the cowl I bought from Fiberglass Specialties, I bought the 8", but will cut it down
to around 6" in length, as I don't need the extra length for my twin.

and a typical Mulligan this size weighs?

Just curious ... I laugh about this whole subject sometimes, because in the end .. we pretty much fly them regardless. Well at least once !

Truckracer, I'll take your comments under advisement as I don't want to get off the thread with more chat.  I plan on doing some engine testing this spring before I start my Mulligan so I won't be quite as numb as I am now. re your D-145 you might like this thread

Bill,  Nice looking parts and engine, I am being treated to some computer problems myself - good to see yours are sorted out.  :-)

I'd like to keep the cowl short but I bought the long cowl like you just to give myself a little wiggle room.    Best Regards  Cliffc

I guessing the Mr. Mulligan will come in at around 23-25 pounds,
mwhar760 built the same short kit and his came in at 31.
