Inter-cooler doors
I made a video but don’t know how to load it on RCU. The servo mounting is temporary, just for testing. I need to be able to install the door after I finish the fuselage with paint and all so this was a test. I will mount the servo closer to the former by the end of the wing, one on each side on a Y.
The linkage is simple, it will be similar to this but with an easy adjuster on the servo side.
Being this is the prototype I am adding as I go, adjusting and trimming.
I was successful in being able to install and remove the door and linkage so I trimmed the door to the right size and she is good to go. I will glass the inner part with the fuselage then after painting is done I will glue in the door and hook it up to the servo during setup. Now I need to build the second one.

Very Nice! Are you going to have that on a separate channel or mix it with something like throttle?

Currently it is on a switch, but I may put it on a mix with the gear, or throttle. I am running out of channels fast. I need a new radio. I have cowl flaps to do also and want them on a mix with throttle but I still need more channels and mixes. I’m thinking a 12 or 14ch radio will do it all.
Maybe this new radio!

Guys,
I got my DX18 late last year. I'm good for a LOOOONG time. Its time for ya'll to upgrade to the many channels kinds of guys. Its not only the extra channels but extra programming functionality. I still have my 7 channel.

TB here is what I'll be doing on my Meister p-47. I've already tried it with the servos hooked up. Using 4 y harness's on my JR 11X I have the cowel flaps on the throttle channel along with the side cooling doors.
So at low throttle the cowl flaps and cooling doors are open, then as the throttle is advanced the doors and cooling flaps close. You may have to reverse some of the servos. I'm using Hitec servos and have the servo programer
so it simplifys the set up. I still can switch the side doors to the flaps if the need comes up but I'm going to try it all on the throttle channel first.
Nice video on your doors and a great video on the P-47. Thanks John T.

I'm looking at a 14c radio. That will give me 12ch to use as I like and 2 switched. I don't like using Y harnesses on ailerons and flaps if I can help it.
My intercooler doors are not scale but they will do on this plane. The next one they will be scale.

Completion of the inter-cooler doors
I spent the evening building the second door and installing the servos and linkages, so now it is all done and I can move on
It was so much easier to do the second one, and it is a little cleaner then the first one. I used some piano wire and carbon fiber tube to stiffen up the push rods. I will remove the servos and doors now that they are done and go ahead and close up the bottom of the fuse.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a new 14c radio. There is no way I am going to be able to set this plane up with a 10c radio. I will have 15 servos and I will be using every channel of the 14c. Next I will finish the fuse.
Hopefully this video wont traumatize anyone

Fuselage bottom completion
The last of the sheeting went on today. I like to take the rough sheets and wet them, then tape them to the fuselage in the location they are going in. I then use my heat gun and dry them. This gives me a nice rounded piece of balsa to work with. Then I trim and fit. Makes it so much easier.
Looks like we have a jug

Tail section
I am finally getting to the tail section and the ruder. I got the saddle for the bottom block all sanded and ready.
That block is like a brick, I am going to turn it over after I get it all sanded and give it the canoe hollowing. Currently it weighs 4oz, but I still have a lot of sanding to do. I am going to sand the bulge on the ruder at the same time as the bottom block.
The ruder currently weighs 3-7/8oz that will come down after I sand a bunch of balsa off it.
I glued in some pieces to make up the imbalance at the end of the fuselage. I will sand that down with the block and ruder, then fill with putty.
I am excited to see how the ruder turns out. I will work on that tomorrow.

The second plane in the begining of the video has it's star on the wing upside down, rookie mistake...

Does anyone have a completed ruder that is ready to glass they can weigh. I am really curious to what the stock ruder weighs compared to my full figured ruder?

P.S. Gary your bird deserves a new radio, besides you can't fly it with the one you got

Tail section
The canoe came out nicely. I was able to get it down to 2oz in pre-fitting. It should come down closer to 1-5oz or less when I am all done sanding.
I did not hollow out the back section, I left that for the ruder hinge.
I left 1/8"to 1/4" of material to sand out after I glued the cane in. I don’t want to risk over sanding it before I glued it in.
I glued it in with 30 min epoxy. While I was waiting for the glue to dry I rough sanded the ruder shaping it. I trimmed the sheeting at the wing saddle and the firewall too.

Tail section
I sanded the LE of the bulge down until I was able to get the hinge pin in. So nowthe ruder fits tight agents the back end of the fuselage. I taped it in place so it wont move during sanding.
The ruder is pretty fat and it is on the treadmill until she is at the right shape. Lots of sanding left to do.
Once I get the shape of the rear end of the fuselage and the TE of the ruder all lined up and looking good I will pull the ruder and sand the rest of it back to the TE. I will do the bottom section of the hing pocket then and hook up the ruder to do final fitting of the ruder and elevator. I decided that on this build I wont leave any thing undone. I tend to get to a certain point and then I move on to the next phase. Like the wing, then end up coming back and finishing loos ends. So I will take my time and finish the tail section completely. I also want to balance the fuselage once the tail section is done. I will mount the engine and tape the cowl on and see where the CG is on the fuselage. This gives me an idea of where to start placing the servos and other items I am adding to this build.
I wont know what the ruder looks like at the hollowed out portion until it is all sanded. I will be making a finish plat that will be part of the Mirce finishing setup so for a while it will look like it has a big gaping hole in it,

Fuselage end and Ruder
I tackled the sanding of the fuselage end last night, bit by bit it came of.
The fillet that I needed to bring the back right side all even and lined up turned out pretty good, just need some putty and once final sanding is done you will never know.
The block took a lot of sanding. I masked it off with blue tape and went to town . I like to start at one end and take little bits off, maybe a ¼' at a time asI work it down to the tape and move forward until it is all down to the tape. It is much easier to chip away then to try and sand the whole thing at once. I remove the blue tape and reapply about three or four times during the sanding proses.
I finish with the shoeshine sanding method. I rough sanded the ruder bulge shape and I am liking it. At first it was way out of proportion but now it is looking better. I will fine tune it over the next few days.

Back Plate and Ruder
Still more fine tuning to do. I wont do any of the ruder detail until I see Mirce's detailing set. I need to line things up with his set .
I cut the back plate that covers the end of the fuselage. This will finish out the end and clean up all the exits from the control linkages. I will glue this in once I do final fitting of the ruder with leakages hooked up and working. I will do the elevator too. I will glue in the bottom hinge then. The back plate will give me a good surface to add some detailing from Mirce's detailing set
I left just under a 1/16” all around the back plate for the hinge pocket. Once I glue in the back plate I will adjust with some more sanding. The best solution for the hinge pock is to layup some carbon fiber over the end of the fuselage then cut it to make the hinge pocket. That will happen next time I am in the shop.

Ruder
Still some more sanding and tuning to do. I don’t like to do it all in one sitting with details like this. I can reflect and check my reference details and then go at it a little at a time. That way I wont over do it, hopefully
There will be one more back plate that will finish out the back section from the second hing down to the first back plate.
The ruder bulge still looks fat to me so I will put it back on the hinge and sand it down some more before I do the hinge pocket.
TB
Once the ruder is all tuned and rough sanded I will putty the fillets to smooth out the transition on the bulge.
A special thanks toGary (redbiscuits)for all the inspiration.

Thanks buddy, you're doing an awesome job!
Thanks buddy, you're doing an awesome job!
Not bad for a beginner, this will be my fifth kit build to date.
So not much going on in the shop today. I sanded the ruder some more and she is looking better every day. I tested all my linkages with the ruder and elevator. I still need to shave a little more off the inside of the elevators so I get more ruder throw, “gotta have more ruder” I am getting just over 30 degrees throw on the elevator up and down, I can get more but I will have to cut a bigger hole in the back plate. I don’t need to make that call until I am ready to glue in the elevator and ruder. Long ways away.
I did layup some carbon fiber for the ruder hinge pocket. I will let that cure until Sunday, going flying Saturday.
