JH313, I may be a little late with this cowl suggestion but here goes. I also have CG project Cub that is waiting in line. Mine is a 20+ yr old never completed mostly built, partially covered model. The fuselage is all built including an engine mount (no engine). I acquired a Hanger 9 Cub 40 ARF replacement cowl and did a test fit on the Goldberg Cub. Looks like real good fit. It has left and right fax engines with scale air shroud on top, good quality fiberglass, and nicely painted but in Cub yellow. Scuff sand it and spray it in OD to match your army version. It is part # HAN4004, they don't cost much and are available. It's a much better cowl that the original plastic piece supplied with the kit. Check it out

Default RE: Goldberg Rebuild

Thanks for the advice 52larry52, but thanks to cubcrasher I already have a cowl.
Sorry for taking so long to update, but I've been very busy lately. I have managed to strip (most) of the covering off of the fuse and tail. I began to drive myself crazy to get it all off until it hit me that the OD may be dark enough to cover it up. I was right, and with the rudder covered it is not even noticeable. I hope to do the elevator tomorrow. I am actually somewhat impressed with my own covering skills. For a first time project, it is coming out much better than I thought (although that may be due to the dark color.)
I also got off most of the covering on the wing, except for where it joins. I had not realized that it was fiberglassed at the center [:@] which just makes it that much more difficult. To add to it, when I removed the covering I found that the one wingtip had broken off and a few puncture marks in the sheeting. I will have to patch up the sheeting, and hopefully I can reglue the tip together.
Question:
Do I spray paint the cowl, then cut it or cut it then paint it?
Thanks and I promise pictures soon.

For sure, do all the cutting, fitting, hole drilling for needle valve etc, before painting. Get everything done and mounted to your satisfaction and then dismount it and apply the paint. It can be done with the cowl already painted (that how most ARFs are done) but it leaves an unpainted edge where you cut or drill holes and that will really show with the dark green OD color your using. Plus, when you do it on an ARF the paint is well dried and not as prone to surface damage as a cowl you just painted yesterday will be.
