I would certainly add them. Where did you get the engine mount? Your plane looks like it is a fiberglass fuse, if so can you take some photos of the inside setup and post them? Also, I have talked with Wendall many times and he assures me that flaps are not needed on this plane. I have a hard time believing that, but he did design it....

Wendell Hostetler Lancair
The engine mount was on the plane when I purchased it, however it was custome built by D&B Engines-Ridge Machine for the purpose of installing the D&B 3.7 Twin. .I looked at a few other engines and most would likely require cutting the cowl. I might be able to get the Zen G445 I have to fit but having the location be about 1-2" rearward and install a longer prop hub adapter. The fuse is indeed fiberglass and I'll send photos. Although I have a bunch of them loaded on my flickr account. You can click or go to the following link to view my photos. http://www.flickr.com/photos/zebrawh...7632800734135/ The mains(retract) and engine were removed before I purchased the plane.
I spoke with a gentlemen by the name of Ed Sheldon, Ohio area. He has flow and still has a flyable WH Lancair. In fact I spoke with him about 1 week ago and this is what he said. Expect take off to be long. Landing approach all down hill to runway, then add 1 click of flap and wait for it to slow a bit, then add final flap and some power. He said it doesn't have any pitching issues (no nose up/down) attitude. He also mentioned that you keep the nose pointed down towards the runway until just before touchdown, None of that long, slow flaring type landing approach like with high wing trainers. He told me that he takes up all of the 800 ft runway. I asked about taking off with flaps and he said he hand not practiced that before. Also mentioned that it does not like Loops, rolls. Does not have any tail wag in turns, trakes pretty well. Watchful of torque rolls and stalls at slower speeds, basically it doens't fly like a Great Planes 81"w/s Lancair (which I used to have) it it could flow low, slow and long without torque rolling unless to absolutely get too slow.
I'm includign a photo of what the plane looks like with a D&B installed.

Here's another wh lancair very similar to mine that was for sale earlier this year from an estate sale in florida. It was turnkey built for a Doctor who passed away, and was sold to an un-identified man in florida. So who knows where it's at right now.

That engine setup looks great. I have the OS FF320 I am thinking of using, I have read that it is enough to fly this Lancair, but a bigger gasser is not a bad option!

Started back to building...
Nothing terribly exciting, but here are the photos of my spar boxes front and read and the spar plugs.
You'll notice the front spar box may look too long, it's not. the outboard wings of the box are meant to be part of the wing. Since there is a built in angle to the spar box, I decided to build it as a single unit and when I get the first 3 or 4 ribs of the wing panels on, I'll cut off the spar box portions that go into he wing panel.
The 1/4x3/8 longerons will abut to the wing panels spar box.
I did a hand cut on the rear spars, I had noticed that they taper as they go out to the W8 rib.
The rear spar box has an included angel as well however the box is only in the center section.

Getting the center section started. both spar boxes done. It's hard to believe I have to cut off the front of the center sections' ribs in order to put the front spar box in.Then attach the parts I cut off on the front of the spar box. maybe it's normal, I have never had to do that.

Interesting. My spar box was flat all the way out to about 3 inches outside of the fuselage. Then it tapered up....Must be new and improved. My kit is very, very, old....Sebo

Would you buy any chance have drawings of the Barton gear? I have Retract in my nose gear but someone removed the mains, so I was thinking of building a set but hoping to not have to totally re-engineer them from scratch.

Years ago I had scaled up a Great Planes SlowPoke to Quadra size. I ended up with a 38 pound beast that flew fantastic. I put a G-62 on it and it was the best flying airplane I ever had. It expired when those Robart Control Horns Failed. Those Control horns are made out of ABS plastic and break when they start fluttering. They are not for Gassers. Hope they work for you. I still have the rudder and horizontal stab as a reminder of my mistake. Unhook the linkage and bend them sideways if you think I'm kidding.

I keep finding more inconsistent cuts from the kit cutter I used... not a deal breaker, just time consuming to correct.

Wing panel
The4,5,6 pics show where the rear wing spar and the aileron wall is. It seems a little different to me to build as it shows in the plan, but I looked at the plan pic 5 and it shows an overlap. pic 6 is how I interpreted it to be.

Stopping the build for a while, resetting how I want to approach this thing. I may end up getting a new short kit or cutting all new ones myself. not sure. The problem with the kit cutters is they are so backed up. I asked one for just a wing kit and his reply was probably by July 2014, he'd be done due to the backlog....

Wow, that sucks that your kit is presenting so many challenges. If you still want a Lancair that's not the typical Great Planes I know where a fiberglass fuse and foam core wing with retracts is for sale here in my city of Edmond Ok. Ad can be found on RCU, I stopped by the other day to look at it and it's really nice.

Chasrb,
I want to ask you for a favor. Would you entertain letting me use your landing gear to duplicate the parts? I really want to have retracts for my mains, but I'm just not finding them anywhere, for sale or other. Your gear are the only gear I know of that are not mounted. I would pay for shipping both way, insurance and promise to return them by the date your require. You can see my member rating on RCU at zzwcpj. What I want to do is basically take super details measurements etc and get the parts build locally here in OKC. I know you don't personally know me but I'm asking as a fellow Lancair and RC enthusiast. You can call me at 4zero5-31five-22zero9. or [email protected]
I would really appreciate the help, if you can't I'll understand. Charles

Well, I am going to bite the bullet and get a new set of wings made, but I am having them add in the flaps and I will not be using spar boxes but alum channel or tube to be in place of the spars and spar boxes. it'll be a much better design.
Will let you know when I get the updated wings.....
