I'm sorry.. I promised pictures and only now am getting back to it. To recap, I was trying to describe the 'tongue and groove' that Sig uses on its ARF LT-40. I had inherited an ARF wing and converted my fuselage (still in mid process) to wing bolts.

All I have for now is the front where the LE slips into a groove in one of the formers. I describe the bolt-down in Post 706 - I just haven't gotten that far on this one yet.

If you cut two new root ribs for the wing, you can add the tongue. Then you can cut a slot in Former F2 to suit. Measure carefully.

Also - Very Important!! What you CANNOT see is that I also added a small piece of wood across the area above the cutout, beneath the windshield to reinforce the former, so that I can't get the tear-out that I got in my first (bad) design (see Post 706 again). It was a wedge-shaped piece of wood that went from side to side and was glued to the front part of F2.

If that doesn't make sense to you, I'll try to make a sketch of it. But in the mean time, here are photos of the former (the groove needs to be finished a bit) and the 'tongue' on the wing that mates to it.

Bob
Oh, for some reason in my head I had it that sig used two pins, not one tongue... I was thinking a single tongue might cause the wing to twist under high loads, as with the rubber bands the wings are 'pre-stressed' and held in place quite a bit further out on the wing.

Yeah, stronger former is necessary, keying the load into the sides is important too, with something more than glue in shear.

I'm planning to reduce the dihedral in my wing but have a couple questions. Can I get some input on how much dihedral I should plan to have in the finished wing?
Also since the wing joiner is cut at the angle for the dihedral, do I need to cut a new joiner with less angle to get a lower amount of dihedral?

I made the dihedral in my Sr. and Jr.one half of stock. I made new joiners to accommodate that. They still respond well to rudder (infact I can fly circuits around the pattern with only rudder input. But they do respond better to ailerons. You can go to even less dihedral, but rudder response will be less the more you reduce dihedral.

Default Wing attachment.

This is how I did mine. I used a little piece of fiberglass, tri-stock.

This is the wing bolt attachments, thicker ply, no T nuts.

Default Landing gear.

I made mine a tail-dragger. 90% of your problems will be with the nose wheel, get rid of it.

This is how I did the front hold down on my LT40. Probably a little heavy duty for this application but that's just how it turned out. The wing is pictured upside down

Did you take out any of the dihedral?
Did you cut a new wing joiner with less angle?

Yes and yes. I took out about half the dihedral which required a new brace.

CNY_Dave,
The matter of dihedral is a matter of choice. Less dihedral, less 'stability', but not in a 'bad' way. If you were to put, say, 1" under each wingtip, the plane would turn quicker but be less prone to self-stabilization, which is what I was getting at. I would say 1" - 2" under each tip. Don't build the wing flat. It would fly OK but would actually look like you had a bit of anhedral in it, just an optical illusion.

Remember, the LT-40 was designed to be a trainer so it has a lot of dihedral to help with stabilization. Cranking some of the dihedral out (and having to cut a new dihedral brace too) is not a big deal.

My Kadet Sr is finally ready to fly. It has a OS 70 4-stroke, a 2 piece bolt-on wing, mounts for trike or tail dragger gear (or payloads), barn door ailerons, and LEDs for night ops. The covering is monokote. This is my serious goof-off plane!

Anyone else find either the balsa pieces cut for the upper and lower spar doublers are too long, or the first rib past the doublers is cut wrong?

My doublers end right past the rib, the rib is cut to fit the spar with no doubler.

I just cut the rib notch deeper (didn't think to cut the top spar notch before gluing it in, though...)

Dave, as best as I can remember, the spar doublers are a little long and need to be trimmed to fit up against the last rib, but notching the rib works too. No worries!

I love the looks of that airplane! It reminds me of a Cessna 170, which I love. It really has a vintage look.

I've never built a Senior before, but I may just pick one up this winter and have a go at it!

Thanks guys. The nice thing about a kit is that you can put some of your ideas into it, if you are willing to make the modifications and put some time into the design and build process. The nice thing about the Kadet Brotherhood group is that there are a lot of talented guys here who are willing to help you build your special plane.

Hey y'all!! Wanted to stop by and wish all y'all a Merry Christmas (Happy Holiday, whatever). Got back from NY a couple days ago - have been sitting on my duff, just catching my breath and contemplating the meaning of life.

As we expected, I'm now short a sister-in-law - but that's OK. She always lived life to the fullest and left peacefully, so it ain't all that bad.

Hey! We've got lotsa new members - - WELCOME TO THE FAMILY, all y'all.

Gonna get this sent and pop off to sleepy-bye - haven't been sleeping all that well lately. Later.
