New to the sport here. Still buddy boxing on my Apprentice, but I picked up my SIG Kadet Senior Sport ARF on Sunday and have it about half built. Have a Saito FG-17 Gasser to put in it. Have to figure out the wing struts, but hope to have it gone over and maidened by my Instructor over the weekend. Sign me up please!!

Jeff, enjoy your Kadet, its the type of airplane regardless of your piloting skills you will always enjoy flying. That's the reason so many guys have more than one Kadet.

Welcome Jeff.....I would have guessed from the screen name you were a returning enthusiast as I am, but your first line says your "new to the sport" so I'll just leave it at that. I came back after a 20+ year hiatus and very happily found many of the same guys still flying. This is a great sport that you will never be able to get out of your blood once you get hooked. No doubt you picked a top of the line model to learn on!! I am sure you will enjoy it. Looking forward to hearing about the maiden flight!!!

Hey Jeff!! Welcome to RCU, the SIG Kadet Brotherhood, the SIG Brotherhood and RC flying in general. You've got 2 great planes there - the Apprentice is a rather reliable/predictable plane to learn on and the whole Kadet line is the greatest trainer aircraft ever designed (but then, I'm rather prejudiced - I love Kadets). Gotta tell ya, you're doing it right - club & instructor on buddy-box. Can't get better than that. It's the surest way to learn with minimum risk - well done!!

Hey, we gotcha listed here with #162, and in the SIG Brotherhood with #123.
(Above cross-posted to SIG Brotherhood)

Guys, we're all in this together and not here to judge, so let's be honest with each other and stop referring to what we do as a sport, a hobby, or a past time. There is nothing shameful about mental illness and the addictions it causes.

Yes, I live in a houseful of women, girls and cats that have no appreciation for the finer things in life, like the smell of epoxy and balsa dust or glow fuel. I hear this almost everyday.

Amen, and again - AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Truer words have rarely been spoken.

In the world of "mental illness" and "addictions", there were interesting times in the skies around here today. BTE, your signature is, for sure, quite interesting and the subject of some GREAT debate, but I've certainly got a line on the expiration date of propellers - it's somewhere around 38 years.

Now, before all y'all go flaming on me - and I know that I deserve it richly - lemme entertain y'all with a little history. WAAAAAYYYYYYYY back in 1973 I built and first flew my original Kadet with an Enya .35 that still runs today, and a Top Flite 10X6 prop - y'know, the white nylon prop that was kinda fat in the center of the blade. Not totally exact, but looks like this: . Anyway, when I finally retired the Kadet this past December I transferred the prop (still the original 1973 prop) to the new Mk-II, mounting her on my OS.40LA, and flew several of the first flights with that prop - mainly for the nostalgia of the thing, I guess. Anyway, I eventually took the prop off and put it in the flight box for safe keeping. (y'getting the gist of the conversation?) Today, I nicked the Master Airscrew that I've been flying with, so I put the old Top Flite prop back on for a few flights.

Yeah, that's when I found out the expiration date of those props. 100' in the air, engine just shoved to full throttle for what WAS going to be a Cuban-8 and started going up, and she suddenly SCREAMS and then shuts down. No problem, dead-stick landing, been there - done that, many times. Parked the Kadet right behind the van (came to a stop not more than 5' behind the van) and found there was no part of the prop still on the crankshaft. Spinner, nut & washer were all there, hanging loosely, but no prop. My best guess is that she came apart right at the center hole and the blades flew in both directions. No chance of finding them, I guess.

Had to use a Master Airscrew 10x5 for the rest of the day. It was OK, but not as powerful as I'd have liked. Looks like a trip to the LHS this weekend for new props.

I've got a half-dozen more of those old TF white nylon props, but I've also got a feeling they might be somewhat past their expiration dates too, so they're now in the "Old Retired Parts" shoebox.

38 years! Not bad.

OK, all y'all can flame on me now.

Hey Skylark. I've only been in this hobby about a dozen years, but picked up a box of those nylon props at a swap meet, and have never flown with them. A couple things I've heard is that to rejuvenate them, put them in water (warm or simmering?) and let them sit. Also they are suppose to be more dangerous as they won't break if they whack you. Hopefully your engine didn't over rev and is OK.

Yeah I all ways boiled my nylon props. Relieves stresses. I may even have a few. Will have to look. Good for stirring dope, and ya don't need to boil them for that.

I have never felt a closer kinship with anyone else more than I do you. When it comes to balsa dust or the smell of glo we are truly joined at the hip.

See my signature is not so much that there IS an expiration date on all my stuff, it's that it is not listed anywhere!! If I could find where to get that information I would share it..... and then you would have been able to hand down that valuable old prop so later generations would be able to better understand the anarchy we all waded through "in the beginning". And then the younglings would have RESPECT for us!!

Is it any wonder we, victims of obsession, have evolved to the level of insanity when you consider the plethora of "unknowns" we have accepted as the norm?? It's no wonder I have uncontrollable tics in my right eye or involuntarily elevate myself when someone speaks from behind me!!

BTW....I have one of those white props too from deep in the shoe box. But darn if I can find an expiration date on it!!

And the ever popular: "Remember, I'm pulling for ya. We're all in this together!" Correction to post above its: "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

And an all time favorite quote:
Harold Green: Well, you know what I think...
Red Green: It doesn't matter what you think, Harold. If you were married, you'd know that.

OMG, Mike - that's funny!!!!! And, unfortunately, quite true.

Yeah, wayyyyyyyyy back in the "olden dayes" we always boiled our propellers before using them - and this one was no exception. It WAS boiled,

...in 1973.

And, YES! This type of prop was positively deadly if handled carelessly. There are a lot of us out here with scars to chronicle our "poor judgement" in that manner at various times.

Aha, I see that old acdii has his usual spin on the prop, which is OK as long as he doesn't wash out.

IMHO, the REAL miracle is that it lasted all those years without a nick.

This really does get me to wondering though - I've got 3 C/L aerobatic types that each have wood props (TF, of course) that date at least 30 years back. Thinking it might be time to change them out too.

Yeah, engine's fine - ran another 5 flights with the 10x5 prop.

OK I'll bite......I'm thinkin it is an east coast term cause I have not been able to shake anything out of the piggy bank that matches O&R and I am pretty sure my kids will categorize me somewhere between dinosaur breath and dirt.

Hey Hank!! You're speaking, of course, of the old Ohlsson & Rice ignition engines of the 1930's & 40's.

Yeah, guess most everyone is a bit young to remember them - and I really wouldn't know much about them (I'm 66) but my dad had 5 O&R .23's when I was very very young. One was mounted in a C/L plane (don't remember which one anymore), the other 4 were always kept in the box. They were intended to go into his one-fourth done C/L B-17 one day.

Alas, the years passed and the B-17 never got any closer to being finished. Finally, a week after I retired from the USAF I bought the plane and engines from him. Took me 7 years to finish the plane and get the engines running to my satisfaction. Once I had everything broken-in and working just right, we had my dad transported down in an ambulance to see the culmination of nearly 50 years of waiting. Everything worked perfectly (of course), and I gotta tell ya, that plane has SOME KIND OF PULL on the handle when she's cruising - 85' lines.

He was gone a month later but I still get her out on his birthday every year (18 June) for a couple flights, and the engines still work just fine every year.
