The second character in this person's identification is not the letter ' i ' _ _ _ it is the digit 1 ( one ).

N1EDM is the regstered call sign of an amateur radio station with the FCC ( Federal Communications Commissiion in the United States ).

I am also an Amateur Radio operator since 1946 and have two call signs.
VE3??? ( 3 letters for the ? ) and VA3?? ( 2 letters for the ? ).
The ? in this posting are for privacy.

Hello N1EDM,

I do not feel that the Kadet is much of a military aircraft.

Perhaps instead of adding a 'bomb drop" it could carry parachutists when the wind is not too fast.
These guys / girls ( by the color ) descends very slowly and can easily cover more ground than altitude.

They landed in the tall grass and lost their orientation to return to the airport. I was part of the rescue mission and retrieved them _ _ _ Hee! Hee! .

Ya _ _ _ they have guns but do not have to fire them . . . .

How would you like to hang under a parachute by your head ?

If its a SIG, and you go to the SIG fly in, you will need to drop bombs. LOL After being at the last one, I will be practicing bomb drops with my T-Clips for next years fly in. That was a blast. Going to stay the entire time next year instead of one day. It rained most of the time I was there so did not get a lot of flying in, but did get enough to win some glue!

Hey Bob, you're #60 in the SIG Brotherhood and #3 in the SIG Kadet Brotherhood. Glad to see ya brother - don't think I've seen that V-tail of yours before. Nice job.

Yeah, been neglecting the roll lately, so here it is for both B'hoods:

DUH.... I'm worse off than you think!! :-) :-) I thought that this was a different brotherhood!!

As for the tow point, it's right behind the TE. And for the fun of it, I built a new wing without the stock wingtips. Instead, I left them off and put on wing tip plates. They're about 3/4" larger than the airfoil profile. The difference in flight is amazing. In fairness, I've only had one flight on it so far but several ex LT-40 pilots also commented on its performance. The plane has an old style (but NIB) OS 61SF on 10% fuel flinging a 13x4 prop for slow flight. So far, my only regret is not building flaps into the wings when I had the chance, just to experiment.

Here are a couple of photos. One shows the tow point behind the wing, and the other shows the new wingtip (the original wing was damaged). If you have any questions, feel free to ask!!

Soarrich, the whole plane was an experiment. I did the V-tail because I wanted a tow plane and didn't want to have the towline hang up on a rudder. I know that in real life, it would not, but I needed the excuse to make the V-tail. It flies just like a conventionalI tailed airplane.

As for the trike gear, I went back to that because everything that I have, almost, is tail dragger. I wanted to put another trike into the stable.

As for civilian purposes for a bomb drop??? Of course there are parachutists that can be dropped as you point out, but how about when you have a Club bomb-drop contest for accuracy??? Or if you want to make the plane into a toilet paper bomber??? Those are legitimate civilian uses, I would think....

With the heavy duty LG and the .61 motor, the plane came out about 1 lb heavier than a stock LT-40 but I think that it flies better!! It doesn't bounce around like a kite and the wing has plenty of lift to handle the added weight... I'm still feeling this out. Now I need to get a glider to tow up (I actually have one). A good friend/glider guider suggested that the glider have ailerons to keep the glider out of trouble if it goes kattywompus during the tow.

Zor, thanks for providing the explanation on the Callsign for them. You can always remember mine: Need 1 Extra Dry Martini !!! Been licensed since 1984 but not active recently. I spent a fair amount of time in Uncle Sam's Naval Air arm and whenever we were on a flight and I had some time, I would sneak up into the radio compartment and fire up the HF's (250W at 25,000 feet!!) and become Aeronautical Mobile. You've been since 1946? Whew... You've seen a lot of technology changes, haven't you!!

If anyone is curious about it, ask away!!

Bob

Default Wing tip baffles

N1EDM and the group,

I do not know the proper term for the wing tips additions so I called them "baffles"

Many thanks N1EDM for the information and pic of the towing cable.

I have used wing tips additions on my Spectra model and it does make a noticeable difference after installation. This kit has been highly modified with the increased wing area and flaps and ailerons. Even a removable landing gear. Like most of the models I have built recently they are experimental including crash proofing experiments.

The wing tips on the Spectra are going down enough to prevent the aileron servo linkages of touching the hard ground.

Those wings are able to switch over to negative dihedral along the flaps length.

A couple suggestions for towing.

1. It's good to have a release on both planes.

2. Your tow line should have about 10' of line then some shock cord 1'~2', then ~50' of line, then a flag ~2' in front of the sailplane, then the end of the tow line. If you put the shock cord too close to the tow plane when you release it might snap the tow-line forward into the tow planes prop, the tow pilot won't like that.

3. The tow line works best if it's at the bottom of the nose, but it can be anywhere as long as you keep it at least 1/2 the way from the normal tow hook forward.

4. Aileron sailplanes work best.

5. The sailplane pilot just keeps the wings level, and lets the tow plane pull the sailplane around any turns. If the sailplane tries to bank into the turn it will overrun the tow line. If the flag touches the nose of the sailplane first make sure you wings a level, if they are you just need to pull more up elevator.

6. The sailplane doesn't need a dolly, it will be flying way before the tow plane.

What difference did you notice with the end plates as opposed to the normal wing tips?

I am trying to clearly undestand the part of item 3 highlighted in blue.

In the last line I undestand that you are asking Bob.

At a club in San Diego I did a little bit of tow gliding. I built a great planes spirit 100 with a tow release right centered in the nose. What blast that was. I still have the wings. I reckon they are begging for a new bod. All of my planes are in storage right now. But when I ever I handle the wings the urge to reuse them is there. Maybe add a new center section and up the wing span by about a third.
I had a tow hook release point mounted at the cg on top of the wing. Conventional tail never notice any problems with the tow line and tail.
The club I will join after the first of the year has a +700ft paved runway, and looks like a great site for this.

Default I now understand item 3

soarrich,

3. The tow line works best if it's at the bottom of the sailplane nose , but it can be anywhere as long as you keep it at least 1/2 the way from the normal tow hook forward.

What confused me is "at the bottom of the nose" .
I now realize from you sketch that you meant "at the bottom of the fuselage".

All is now clear.
If the tow attachment to the sailplane is in front of the drag vertical axis then the sailplane pilot only has to keep the sailplane wings level and the sailplane will follow the tow plane during a turn.

Thanks for the sketch.

Zor

Thanks, Soarrich. Those are on my punchlist. I think I'm going to take a Tower Hobbies glider and add some ailerons to the wings for the first test vehicle next spring. The nose area is too small for a tow release so I'm fabricating my own. Later on I'll graduate to more sophisticated gliders.

Zor, I think that most winglets/wing tip fences, etc., are a combination of TLAR, and a certain 'coolness' factor. I'd love to do some testing in a wind tunnel. Airliners have wingtips that twist up (like the ones in your photos) while Hoerner tips on light aircraft are on the bottom of the wing. Mine are all around, just to be conservative. I'm going to try some more designs later. I want to try a design that just drops below the bottom of the wing, with nothing on the top for a fence, just to see if there is a difference.

I only have the one flight on the V-tail so far with the wingtip fences. I'll hopefully be at the Field on Sunday and will take them off to fly, for a comparison. I'll let you know then! I also have a Delta Vortex (Bruce Tharpe Engineering) that has fasteners built in for wingtip fences, but I haven't tested them yet.

Default Are we trolling ?

To troll or trolling is a general term used when a more appropiate word cannot be thought of.

It means something like hanging on behind like pulling a bait behind a slow moving boat.
Trolling is used to define the action of someone who is posting what can be considered 'non-relevant' statements or when some participant is disagreeing with someone or has a different idea.

As we discuss winglets ( a better word than baffle ) as a modification to a model airplane it seems to me that we are discussing some item of kit building.

Many builders make modifications to a stock kit and I believe that discussing these modifications is part of kit building.

I imagine that this post can be judge as 'trolling' but I think that we should be free and allowed to express our feelings about what we can discuss. I honestly think that discussing winglets as a modfication to a kit design is appropriate to kit building.

What do you guys / gals think ?

I wanted to discuss the reasons and effects of winglets but I now hesitate to avoid being told ' I am trolling '.

It may be wwiser to discuss winglets in a separate thread, as they are not specific to the Kadet.

;
TomCrump and all readers,

Along this thinking I would suggest that any mention of a modification in building a model airplane ( kit or from so called scratch ) should be avoided.

I hope that all builders are taking notice.

Since I wish to be wise, I will stop posting any preparation work to the build of my Kadet Senior if it is not specific to the original design and drawings.

Thanks TomCrump.

Or, we could move all of the Kadet and Kadet specific thread to another site and leave this one to the discussion of wingets and such by those wanting to.

If you want to keep posting about winglets here., do so. It was just a suggestion to take the discussion to a seperate thread.

Bye, now.

3 channel, I converted mine to tail-dragger, and flew it with an OS FP.25. Lots of fun. Baffled the four channel fliers until I told them the rudder was on the aileron stick. Gone now to fly with the Children of the Corn.

I modded my 1rst Jr are out by adding strip ailerons with simple Monocoat hinges. OS .25 SF (or earlier). I added extra wide mains to it. After some flying I ran my radial arm saw thru the center of the wing and reduced the dihedral by over half. Then it got real fun. Don't recall I lost it.
But I had to have another. Built it with <halve dihedral and strip ailerons from the get go. Same engine. At one point I stuck a .40 up front. That was entertaining!
Lost that one also.
So I built a third from plans. Same as #2. I made a set of floats for it, and added a pair of removable vertical fins. Totaled just the fuse attempting to take off from grass. Nose wheels dig in on grass, so I never reached a safe speed when I forced it off and snapped rolled back to the ground.
So I built a new fuse. At that time we were in a one bedroom apartment, so the build took place on the kitchen table. A very tolerant wife.

I still have #3. It has not yet flown on floats. I was not real happy with floats (thought the nose to short). so I tossed them during a move. Will build another set. Also intend to build a set of floats for my Sr.

On the other site I found some one that flies in The Modesto Reservoir. That is only about 45 minutes away. I hear it beckoning me. Gotta make those floats.

Yellow and blue always looks good on a plane!

A Conniekadet, I made a Connieshrike once, "if one tail is good, three must be better".

What is the loose wire on the port float for?

Water ruder servo. I embedded a 15gm servo in the float to drive 1 water ruder. The pics were just test how it sat in the water.
It was just easier to embed a separate servo on a "Y" than mechanically link the ruder.

I felt it needed a little extra fin area to make up for the side area of the floats up front. I have flow a few plane the seemed lacking in yaw and needed more fin. I once had a full flying fin blow off of slope glider. Man did that get interesting real fast with 0 fin area.

I only have have the opportunity to fly off of water 2 or 3 times. I absolutely loved it. Now that I am so close to a site where I believe I can, gota do it again. Besides I can always throw a hook in the water also.

I'm a little late getting to this but it wasn't my intention to get this thread off topic with the winglets. I was only tossing them out as a possible modification to the Kadet, and how I had done it.

Apologies if it offended anyone.

Back to the topic at hand.....

Bob
