~~Sig Kadet Brotherhood~~.

My Feedback: (94)
Just heard about this brotherhood and would love to join in! I think the Kadet should be developed into a full-scale design since it is one of the best ever flying R/C models ever made! Through the years my dad and I have built or owned at least 7 variations of the Kadet. I look forward to sharing photos and videos of them with you. Thanks!

Geez Bob, for me any and all Kadet mods are rather fascinating - some of them are positively thought-provoking. The Kadet is such a natural for "playing" with the design, you can't hardly go wrong with ideas on this bird. I enjoy seeing this stuff.
Ken, I like the Connie-tail - useful too, with those floats.

You're right - the Kadet would be quite an interesting full-scale plane. I'd love to see one.
So, here's the SIG Kadet Brotherhood, as I've got it today:[TABLE="width: 508"]

Awesome, thanks! Excited to be a part of this community!
Here's my most favorite Kadet ever; built and modified by my Dad, Stan Zimmerman, who lived in Muncie, Indiana. It is a kit-built LT-40 with an O.S. 48 4-stroke. He extended the wing span by about six inches, made the wing bolt-on and added 6x4" flaps next to the fuselage along with flapperons on the outboard wing panels that would allow me to land the plane at a very steep angle of approach without gaining speed and flare-out to a nearly zero-ground speed landing upon touchdown. The flaps/flapperons also made for some incredible STOL take-offs. With a little headwind it would take off it it's own length and climb out majestically. With Dad's customizations, we affectionately called it the "KaZim" and had custom decals cut for it. Showed off Dad's great work with transparent yellow covering.
Next at up is another Kadet built by Stan Zimmerman. This time an LT-25 that also featured a bolt-on wing and flapperons, as if it needed to be landed any slower! What a joy to fly. It started out life with an O.S. 26 4-stroke and even served time with a set of floats for some fun on the water.
Later on it became even more fun to fly when the covering was redone (sadly, the transparent purple gets brittle quickly) and it was converted to electric and it would slow down even further since each landing was essentially a dead-stick and it would float down like a feather.
I lost count of how many people I trained or let fly my next kit-built LT-40. This is the one that convinced me that this design should be carried over to the full-scale home-built experimental world (if I ever have the resources!), because it just flies perfectly! There is nothing more enjoyable than a calm evening and shooting touch-n-go's one after another with this plane. You know what I mean! This one also had a bolt-on wing, otherwise it was stock with an O.S. 48 4-stroke
Finally, until I can scan in or find the rest of my photos, this is my Kadet Senior, converted to a tail-dragged and done up in airshow colors. It also featured a bolt-on wing, enlarged ailerons and flaps. Always fun to fly!
Here are a few more photos of our Kadets. They make great float planes with the addition of floatation devices! First the LT-25;
Here's the LT-40;
Here's a photo meant to be a possible help. The LT-40 was originally built with a 2-stroke engine and it was going to be a huge pain to move the control rod over to the other side for the 4-stroke, so I just installed a mini-servo in front of the fuel tank to make things very simple with no binding.

Thanks Battle Short, like everyone else in this group, the Kadet has been an integral and rewarding part of my overall R/C experience and most of the memories are great ones. I'm still going back through the many posts to see what amazing things have been done with this series of aircraft. Wonderful creativity out there, but even the good ol' stock, plainly covered Kadet, can be very rewarding. Hope to see your Kadets!

I've often thought this about some of the models I've flown. Definitely all Kadets could make good full scale planes, but I've thought some others would just be fun flyers to float around in like the oltimers with a big under-cambered wing. Though they might get a bit scary in some wind.

Yeah, that could be awesome, but I'm not sure I'd want to sit my butt in an airplane that doesn't have ailerons. However on a "hot-air-balloon-quality" type of day, I'm sure it would work perfectly fine. I have no way of knowing, but I would think that a Kadet-styled full-scale airplane could become an all around work-horse or one heck of a fun homebuilt. You would think the designers of full-scale aircraft would take more advantage of a scale airplane prior to going big, just to judge flight charachteristics. As I'm sure you have; I've flown some scale models that make you wonder how the full-scale ever got off the ground!

You're welcome Mud Duck.
I'm actually still putting together my first Kadet, an ARF LT-40 EG. I'm making it a taildragger. Still undecided of what power I'm going to put in it. I have a variety of engines that would work, OS .46AX, OS .46FX, Saito .82 or even a RCGF 15cc gasoline. Currently I'm leaning towards the .46AX but the nose weight required to get a good balance will be a large factor in which engine actually goes in it. I realize the last two would be overpowering it...

Battle Short, even with the additional nose weight, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how well your Kadet will fly with the .46AX - the power of that engine combined with the flying characteristics of the Kadet, will make it so that you won't even know that weight is in there. That'll be an awesome combination, but as you know, just make sure you balance it properly and you'll probably end up with a plane that gives you a life-time of enjoyment. Taildragger will be fun, especially if you're flying off grass.. Tricycle gear is fun too because of the placement of the gear can allow you to land on the mains and "pull-a-wheelie" all the way down the runway until you lift off again or bring it back to the pits. Both configurations are great fun and both have their advantages. I'm sure you're doing great, but if you have any questions during the build, don't hesitate to ask, even via PM. I've got a Kadet Senior ARF in a box and after seeing this thread, I'm getting desires to get it out and finish it for Spring.

Thank you for the generous offer Mud Duck, I'll take you up on it if the need arises.
Early this summer my first trainer, a Tower Hobbies 60, reached its expiration date. Totally my fault, I overstressed it...during a fly-in at that. But then I won a Futaba 14SG so it was actually a good day for me. Since its loss I haven't flown much even though I have some other planes to fly-sport type no trainers. A couple of weeks ago I was in a hobby shop and they had a Hobbico 60 (basically same as the Tower 60 I had) and the Kadet LT-40. I realized I really missed the laid back flying I did with that trainer, so after comparing the two and thinking about it overnight I went back and walked out with the Kadet. I think I'm really going to like it!

Glenn, it always sucks to lose that first trainer, but if you're going to do it, do it at a fly-in in front of a crowd and go out in style! While they may have geggled because you tore up a trainer, I'll bet there wasn't anyone giggling (other than you) about winning that sweet radio! I'm excited for you! You definitely made the correct choice at that hobby shop and I'm really looking forward to seeing your finished model and since you're apparently down in NM, you don't have to wait for warmer weather, so hopefully soon! LOL, it'd be so awesome to show up at the field with an LT-40 and THAT radio to guide it. Ha! Think I'll go ahead and clear the workbench over the Thanksgiving holiday and start refurbishing or building one of my Kadets.

For me clearing the work bench means finishing up what I started LOL. I would say 2 more days and the Cub will be done, then I can pull the LT out of the trailer and give it a once over for next year. Need to run some fogging oil in the engine for storage too.

I am at the stage in the LT .40 plans where I join the wings. I am still planning on the dual aileron servos and bolt on wing and have the materials and some plans for the servo boxes. My question is regarding flaps on the Kadet LT .40. For those that have added them, does it impact flight enough that it was worth it, and how did you decide where to cut the aileron for the flap length? I have a FMS Mustang and Flyzone Beaver with Flaps and like the way they impact landing in both those planes.

Seems to me that you are answering your own question.
You like the flaps action on your FMS Mustand and Beaver; you should like it also on this one.
The length of flaps should be equal or longer than the ailerons.
Ten to fifteen degrees of flaps can also shorten the take off if the model is not overpowered.

I've switched back to one aileron servo with the ailerons permanently dropped 10°and rudder mixed in at 75%. With this setup I can fly normally, or I can really slow down, and can dive at the runway 30° then flatten out and land.

+1 on flaperons. The LT-40 doesnt really need flaps, its a nice floater all by itself, but since you are going dual servo, mix in the flaperons. With that kind of control you should be able to fly it backwards. I have flaperons on my 4*120, to slow it down since it will float forever, but the 40 comes in so nice, that I never even considered adding a second aileron, though after 4 years or so of reckless flying the control wires to the ailerons are getting loose, so I might just add duals to it.

Thanks for all the feed back. I will look into the flaperon's idea. I am still relatively new to this hobby and am just enjoying trying some new things with this build. It's a great escape to the garage.

T-47, I would certainly agree with Zor on both proceeding with adding the flaps and making them the size he recommends at your discretion. Two of my Kadets have flaperons and one also has flaps. The flaps are 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep, right next to the fuselage, so they're very effective. Here's a photo of that one with both in the full down position;
In this photo I am doing something that is a great amount of fun...zero or negative ground speed. If you get a bit of a headwind, you can deploy the flaps and flaperons and the additional lift combined with the wind speed make the airplane stop or even fly backwards! That is so much fun (at least I enjoy it)...it gets "stuck". Hope you have fun designing and flying your Kadet!

Hello Gary: I have had a few Kadets in my sordid R/C history and found all to be excellent flyers. I do have a set of plans and a few balsa ribs for templates from a Kadet Mark II kit. Know anyone that might be interested? Presently listed on RCU.

OK I know this could be considered off subject but not really since I was flying a Kadet..... and....... there has already been some discussion about weather.
I recently made some fun of the members of the Brotherhood dealing with early winter conditions, but it is rare that those conditions surface without some form of warning.
Here is an example of what we southwesterners have to deal with.
http://youtu.be/cj7Zk4C4It0 I was actually flying a plane when this hit. No exaggeration, I completely lost sight of the plane just before it landed and all I could do was hold down elevator and run out to where I thought it would be. Luckily I guessed right and found it but had to chase it as holding down elevator allowed it to roll backwards at about the same speed as I am capable of running.

Ye gads Tony, that doesn't look like very much fun at all - awfully hard to do touch-and-go's in. Good news is that you got your week's worth of exercise in chasing the plane down, and it's still in one piece.
Yeah, flying is definitely one of those "participate whenever possible" kind of sports and "possible" goes out the window awful fast sometimes. Those guys in Canada and Alaska though - y'gotta admire their tenacity sometimes.
Had my Kadet & Sr Falcon out yesterday in 68 degree (20c) weather for awhile. Then early winter came back - end of fun for the day.
