I built two planes with my daughter in '85, they where a OLY II and a OLY 650 sailplane LOTS of Pink and Purple MonoKote on those. We went to the Nats and she won all three Junior sailplane classes, Unlimited, Standard, and Two Meter. She learned a lot from flying, mainly hard work and practice pays off.

LOL, the covering is already picked out, Ultracote, in Pink and Purple! We haven't had much time on it, the left wing needs the bottom finished, and once done I will make sure to post it. It is becoming a learning experience for her as well, learning how to use a ruler, since apparently they dont teach that in 4th grade. She will learn how to convert fraction to decimal and back again so she can use a Caliper and dial Gauge when we start milling and turning parts on the Sherlines.
At first her eyes glazed over until the light bulb went off as to what measuring was about, and she went about marking the sticks after finding their dimensions. She then set aside the pieces for each wing, and I showed her how to weigh the parts and divide the weight equally for better balance. Turned out that the trailing edge for one wing was denser than the other so it was a good lesson for her. She divided the parts and was able to match each wings parts so they were as close in weight to each other.

Formal education has not improved. I used to have school classes 8 AM to 5 PM with one hour lunch time; now here the clases start at 9 AM and I see the kids walking home just after 3 PM.
No surprise so many cannot spell and format their sentence and dislike any maths.

Yeah I agree with Zor on that, but lets not stray into something ugly. Plain and simple our public education system sucks, so we as parents just have to do what we can to make sure our children rise above and beyond. Building these planes will go a long way in my eyes. Oh and you guys better believe you will see it when its done. You all have seen the Cub and how it came out, the iron on is so much easier and I have this nifty cutting tool now to make patterns out of the covering. I think it will be a real looker when its done. Pink with purple sallops on the leading edges, and maybe do something like on the T-Clips on the Fuse.

Please, share what tool you are using, I never could cut the 'Cotes very well, except straight lines on glass with a straightedge and a new #11.

It's a Fiskars rotary cutter for fabric. Just a small very sharp pizza cutter. They make several different types including pinkers.

Thanks, my sister-in-law sews a lot and has some of those. I will borrow one and see how it works. Can you sharpen them? What surface do you use under the material you are cutting? Thanks again.

The only negative thing that I've heard about the LT-25 is that the LG mounting area is weak so you might want to reinforce it. Also, if possible, mount the gear with 10-24 nylon bolts. If it makes a rough landing, the bolts should shear instead of ripping the LG block out of the fuselage. I haven't done this on the LT-25 but I've done it on other planes. It works well.

Hey guys,
I slowly continue to plow along with my scratch built Senorita build. I have the Horizontal stab about 3/4 done and decided to take a picture of it before it's done. As soon as I get the cap strips on both sides I'll start framing up the Vertical Stab.

Hi guys. Been away for a while. Career and a spider bite that about killed me had me occupied. Glad to see some if my favorite people still here.
Re the purple and pink monocoat. Did that a few years ago. Will try and find a picture of it.
Question. Has anyone on this group built the Kadet Sr wing with barn door ailerons and flaps? Looking for someone to frame up the wing panels but not join the wing panels for shipping.

Here's a little secret that I stumbled on about 10 years ago. Get a personal vinyl cutter. You can get the smaller Roland cutters for a pretty reasonable price, and what's great about them is you don't need to purchase special software to run it. You can get the 12" cutter for $795 or if that's too pricey you can get the the 8" cutter for $595, most everything you are going to cut you can get done on the 8" cutter. Now here's what you do. You order application tape (used for applying vinyl graphics. trust me, once you have the cutter you ARE going to wind up cutting vinyl too!!!! more than later) to work your Monokote for cutting. Lay down the Monokote upside down and then apply a layer of the application tape to it, this will now make it firm enough to run through the cutter. You will have to experiment with the cutter height so that it cuts your Monokote and not the carrier under it, but this doesn't take long and once you have it done it usually stays set. Now you can run your graphic through the cutter and get it cut out. the application tape underneath will hold in place as it's being cut. When it comes time to apply the Monokote you have two options. You can simply apply the Monokote as you normally would, you will do this for large graphics. You can iron them on, use the WIndex method, or use your favorite method. Or if you have a complicated graphic that is going to be hard to hold in place you can use application tape to pick up the graphic and apply. You will have turn up the heat on your covering iron a bit, but it will heat up enough to get the covering to graphic under the tape the stick the the model and then you can pull the application tape away and hit the graphic again with the covering iron to set it in place.
And as I said above, find a good vinyl supplier because once you have a cutter you will be cutting vinyl with it. You have going to be cutting for yourself, but once your buddies find out that you can do this guess what they are going to asking you to do???

there is another way to cut vinyl. you can pick up an old HP pen plotter. they make a cutter for it you can use instead of the pens you would normally plot with. its not perfect because it doesnt compensate for the cutter swiveling around sharp corners. but it does a good job for what it is. and the pen plotters can be had pretty cheap since they are obsolete in the printing world since the introduction of ink jet. I actually have a couple of them that are 36" wide and will do 150 foot long plots.

My Kadet Senior flew away last Saturday
My Kadet was almost 15 years old. I fly it every year, nearly every month of the year. I fly more challenging aerobatic planes, but I always come back to the graceful flight of the Kadet. I was doing multiple hammer head stalls with it. I had been flying it for 20 minutes. This plane has a flight time of between 53-56 minutes if you fly it normal. I came down for a touch down, then took off again full throttle. I banked left slightly. The battery must have unplugged itself. It stayed at full throttle in a slight left turn full throttle. It was making a circle that was only about 50 feet in diameter and finally stayed at that bank angle. Every once in a while it would almost loop, then make level left hand circles again. I threw the other planes in the back of my truck and tried to follow it. After 2 miles I lost it over a school near a highway. It had about another 20 minutes of fuel left in the tank. I looked everywhere. The next morning I searched on the other side of the highway. I told a guy at church what happened. He happened to see it in someone's back yard, 7 miles away from the takeoff location. Good thing it was going in left hand circles and not straight. The rear of the right wing was torn apart. The firewall came off. The battery was unplugged and near the rear of the fuselage. Everything else was fine. Due to the fatigue of the airframe, I decided to retire it. I trained over 50 people on this airplane. Two of which had minor crashes, more like slight incidents. Regrettably this is one retired Kadet. Some Saturdays I would fly it for three hours of true flight time. This plane had hundreds of miles on it. The engine is an OS 40LA. Poor on power, but excellent reliability, start ability and longevity.
One day we flew it across town. Started at the south high school and flew north of town about 10 miles, using FPV. This plane flies at about 32-35 mph at about 1/2 throttle. I still have the plans, I may scratch build another one some day. For now I have scratch built a Telemaster 40 with a four stroke .52 installed. For those that don't know, the flight characteristics of the Telemaster are very similar. Keep the Kadet brotherhood going! I'll check in from time to time. - Regards Vince
