Michael good show on the flying. It is a good feeling when you get to do it on your own. Building also has its rewards. Your build and the covering looks very good. There is a learning curve to using Koverall. My LT-40 is the second time using it. I started covering the fuselage and found I was short on Koverall. I had to be a bit judicious applying what I had. I used dress liner on the bottom but the dress liner-Koverall seam looks terrible. But it's on the bottom so it will not be easily seen.

I'm going with latex so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I'll be spraying too.

Your covering on the fuse looks great to me!

I just finished covering the vertical stabilizer. Each one comes out better than the last. Next is all the control surfaces... do you guys use one piece and wrap it around, or cover each side of the rudder, elevator, and ailerons seperately?

I think the fuselage will be the easiest for me. Pretty much all flat sides, and mine is a current SIG kit so the fuselage is mostly light ply, not sticks.

=michaelnel;12062104 I think the finished product will be nice, but man, what a labor-intensive and expensive process to use this stuff.
But is so beautiful. It's like a woman having a baby, right afterwards "never again", then they forget the pain and just see the beauty.. and it's so much fun making...:^)

The plane in my avatar is covered in dress lining. An Old quart of Nitrate Had a little rust in the can, so it came out a motley brown with one coat of nitrate) for a real tight shrink, The I used Rustolium to paint it. Did not spend to much on covering and painting.

I sure know what you mean about covering being expensive today. I enjoyed every minute of covering my latest with koverall but the cost - not so much. Covering actually cost me more than building it. HOWEVER, once done it looks like a million dollars - and you gotta know that it'll be unique.

I gotta tell you, that wing and stab looks great too.

Press on my friend, press on.

Thank you.

Today I will get the rest of the covering done. Control surfaces and fuselage, then I will start the PolyCrylic coats, 3 total. This thing will fly someday. Sure glad I bought the ARF so I am able to fly that while this slow process goes on.

re: The ARF. The covering on that thing won't stay tight. I have tightened it three times now using an iron and following the method in the manual. When I finish, it's tight as a drum.

I take it out to the flying field and after it sits in the sun in the pits for a while, all the black stuff loosens back up and looks like hell. Wrinkles all over. We live in an area where the humidity is super low, but the temperature is often over 100 degrees in the shade. The SIG Oracover or whatever they call it does not do well in the heat.

I hate plastic covering. It goes on easy, can look OK, but does not hold up to hanger rash well, where the Koverall and Dope can take a beating. Any spot that got rubbed wrong are easily touched up with dope. My Cub looks great, and my Biper is coming out very nice. Only thing I found is the red tends to come off on the towel when cleaning up. It also came out really light compared to the Chipmunk I covered in dress liner and rustoleum. I think that one, since I have to do some covering repairs, I may strip it and ultracote it.

Maybe the problem with the ARF's covering is that the wood is still full of moisture from Vietnam. It is super low humidity here (like 15%) and the black covering absorbs more heat than the white. The moisture gets baked out of the wood in the hot dry air, the black sags and loosens up (the white stays tight). Maybe eventually the thing will acclimate itself to this dry climate and stop shrinking.

Which type of final coat of red is coming off on the towel with cleaning up? Are you using something like Windex to clean up with? Glow fuel or gasoline or a mix? Does "light compared to the Chipmunk" refer to color or weight? If you hate plastic, why are you going to use ultracote? These are genuine questions I am curious about, not flippant remarks. Thanks for your comments.

Sincerely, Richard

It is all SIG dope, the blue doesnt come off, but the red bleeds. Ultracote is much easier to work with than monojoke, it shrinks tighter, and sticks better. The best plastic I used was from SIG, but they don't make it anymore. On the Chippy, I used Rustoleum and that bugger came out too heavy, never doing that again. Sticking with Dope or WB paints and poly or Klass Kote.

I've never used it, but I saw a thread where the guy was painting $10,000 turbine planes for people, he was using Rustoleum, and the planes looked great. It may take a different technique than you are using.

Rustoleum does not produce a heavy finish. If it did, few of my models would fly.

Rustoleum's high hiding properties allow lighter coats to be applied, and still maintain good coverage. I've painted several airframes with it, and I'm completely satisfied.

I'm just joining this discussion... How does Rustoleum stand up to 15% Nitro??? I have to paint some fiberglass pieces with it. How about primer for use over fiberglass???

Are there different formulations of Rustoleum that I should use, or is it just plain old Rustoleum from the Home Center?

Thanks,

Bob

I use the Home Center variety of Rustoleum, purchased in quart cans.

Will it hold up to 15% fuel ? Probably, if you wipe it down, immediately after contact.

I use automotive primers, over fiberglass. If an aerosol is desired, Duplicolor high build is my choice.

Tom, is that little yellow and green number a Cessna 195 and who's design is it?

The spray cans of rustoleum do not hold up to any nitro, but the can stuff does. The thinners used in the spray must change the properties a bit as nitro will wrinkle it up. I think mine came out too heavy since I used white and it took a couple coats to come out even, where the colors only needed one. I may not have thinned it enough either, all I know is my chippy came out a pound heavier than it should have and that was after covering it. My SIG Cub with Koverall and dope is very light. In fact I hovered it briefly the other day, and with some practice and maintain a hover.

The model; is an IKON N'West Cessna 165. Although smaller, and fabric covered, the Airmaster shared some design features of the 195.

I got around to making my tail wheel assembly. A couple of bad practice turns in the 3/32" music wire. Figured out what it needed. Then I made the tail wheel assembly. Second picture is rough install. Last picture, picture not too good, is final install with pivot tube CA'ed in place. I will add epoxy later. Wheel is under pivot tube and turns super easy. It should work good. I will cut wire stock when vertical fin is in place and I can check it against rudder.

Next week I will do the final painting. Nothing fancy. Just good colors for weak eyes.

Well, looking at the picture it dawned on me that I did not allow for the horizontal stabilizer. Now I remember why I cut the pivot tube a bit longer. Easy fix. Cut a longer tube and replace. Good that I caught the error now.

I would like to join. I have three Kadets, a 20 + year old kit built three channel Senior, a five year old tail dragger Senior arf & and an early print built three channel Seniorita. All three are still flying. Neal Smith Alexandria, Va.

Hey Neal! It sure is the place - always glad to meet another brother. Welcome to the SIG Kadet Brotherhood! Gotcha logged with #187. And, next time you happen to find yourself anywhere near Page County I'm hoping you've got a plane or two with you. I've got the finest flying site anywhere in the Shenandoah Valley just 2 miles from my back yard. Wide open spaces galore!

And here's the SIG Kadet Brotherhood, as I've got it today:
