Everyone has their opinions on power. For training and putt putting, my opinion is that an OS 55 is way too much. Mine, at 6 lbs even, flies perfectly for those purposes with a 46LA. See post above. If you don't know the 46LA, it has about half the power of a 46AX. Maybe less than half.

Beginners over-control, so I like stick movements that are not very sensitive. With such a large engine the throttle stick is bound to be sensitive. That's why I like modest power for training. Tell the student to bump up the throttle 2 notches and he gets a little more power. It's safe.

Just my opinion but the .55 is way overpowered. You will have to put a huge amount of down thrust or be jockeying the elevator for every power change. IMO any glow engine over a high performance .40 is just to much. I run a low performance .40 an old K&B .40 and it is fine except for really hot days, even then it is OK except for the initial climb out over a hot runway. I had a TT .46 in it and I thought it was too much.

OS 52 FS in mine, and its just the right amount of power. I take it the 55 is a 2 popper, weed whacking noise maker?

I'm using standard 60 size gear and Tundra tires on mine, I have a 90 twin 4s swinging a 13 inch prop with lots of clearance, a 14 inch prop would be no problem. And yes that's a control liner in the front.
Cheers

I dont remember what wheels I put on my LT-40, I think 3 inch, maybe 3 1/2". I used the Dubro glass filled plastic gear. Plenty of clearance.

That's the way to go. I use 4" light foam wheels on mine, and the Parks people let the grass grow really tall, I've never had trouble getting off.

The landing gear from the Kadet Senior Sport will work. I'm using 14" props on mine, but I did have a 15" on one, for a short period.

This model has 5" tires, but my other Senior, also using a 14" prop, has 4" tires.

Ok looks like i have my work cut out for me, love that people posted pictures ( makes it much easier to see what things look like) but one thing i forgot to ask is how far forward from the original placement to i mount the gear? or mount them directly in line with the leading edge?

I find that the placement is best on most planes with the landing gear just behind the leading edge. When the plane is level with the bottom of the wing level to the ground the front of the tire is at or just in front of the leading edge. That is with a normal sized wheel, with a 4" wheel that would put it about 2" to 1 1/4" behind the leading edge.. Behind this and the plane tips over to easily. Forward of that it is harder to keep it going straight when the tail wheel is off the ground.

Yea, axle on line with the leading edge of the wing. That puts the landing gear right under a bulkhead which helps transfer the loads to the fuse sides. I put some ply on the inside in front of and behind the bulkhead making the floor thicker.

Too far forward for my taste. But with the big rudder probably OK for the Kadet. I would put the landing gear over an inch back from that and add some square spruce at a diagonal from the gear up to the bulkhead just below the window.

This... All my taildraggers have the axle on the LE of the wing, that includes my Cub, T-Clips, and Something Extra. My LT-40 mey or may not be on the LE, could be slightly forward, but I dont have a pic of it at the moment to verify, all I know is it handles perfectly on the ground.

Assuming that you are talking about the Kadet Senior, I suggest that you mount the gear in the location that Sig mounts it in their ARF..

If you are flying from a grass strip that is probably the best location. The older taildraggers had them at about the leading edge, but more modern planes moved them a bit back partly because some were using retracts but also because they were using more paved runways. Reason is that on a grass runway then a pothole or rock will bounce the nose up or cause the nose to tip down. But for landings that are not straight on then the grass doesn't grab as much as asphalt so there is a smaller possibility of a ground loop with the gear back a bit. But with the large tail areas of the Kadet this should not be critical.

Hello all, I have been in and out of R/C over the years, finally getting back into and thought if possible would like to be a member of the brotherhood as well. I learned to fly rc back in '72 with the original Kadet and had taught a few others on this Kadet as well. It still flies well with on OS FP40 after all these years. Also have built and flown a Kadet Sr. but sold it to a friend who crashed his senior so he could keep learning. Have since built a Kadet Mk11 with ailerons and half the dihedral removed it flies great and also lately have build a Kadet Seniorita with flaps and ailerons and is powered by an Eflite Power 15 motor on 3 cells. It has yet to be maidened but hopefully will be soon. I'll post a few pics of my kadets. Thanks Arnie

Started Covering the LT this weekend. started on Friday (long weekend) at 7am and had it done by 5pm took 2 of us to cover it, not because it was difficult but its hard to stand and focus for such a long time working alone but I'm pretty happy with the results. Also modified the decals a bit to match my colour scheme.

Hey Arnie!! Glad to have you - for sure, you're in!! #209 is all yours. Welcome to the SIG Kadet Brotherhood!!!!

Geez, you've got quite a history, and I like the color scheme on your original Kadet a lot. My original Kadet came from 1973 and I just retired it 2 Christmas's back in favor of the Mk-II, set up the same way as yours. I still need to do a Seniorita, maybe this winter. Got a old stock NIB OS.25FP all set to go into her - just gotta do the plane.

That's pretty cool, selling your Sr so somone else can keep flying. My hat's off to you!!

Anyway, here's the SIG Kadet Brotherhood, as I've got it today (3-columns):

FazFly! That's a great covering on the LT. Looking forward to a report on the maiden.

I think it is time to strip and repair my LT-40 wing. Its getting a bit sluggish on the right stick. The right aileron is sloppy loose, so going to switch to dual servos, and see if I can find wider aileron stock, or, just thought it now, split the ailerons and put flaps on using the center servo, and then wide ailerons on the ends. I know I can have it just sit in the air on a windy day, I want this one to fly backwards!!!

Hmmm my kinda guy... like the plan.. maybe time to move the flap servos to the wing as well and do a bolt on conversion

The bolt on conversion is great, first mod I did while building it. I also flattened the wing down to 1" dihedral. Stock LT-40's look strange to me with the v wing. I still have a flap linkage from another plane just sitting around that will work fine for this. Shoot, I am even thinking of Fowler flaps. I want to see this plane come to a stop in the air!
