That really IS a good color and pattern - easy to see, easy to control. For sure, you're IN with #213. Welcome to the SIG Kadet Brotherhood!!

Flyer - your LT's just 12? Shoot man, that's just barely broken in. FLY!!!!!!

Anyway, here we are - as I've got us today:

I started flying in May 2014 on an Apprentice. Saw this plane and decided I had to have it. Got it all put together and maidened it (on a buddy box with instructor as I had not yet earned my Solo Certificate) in August 2014. The plane is so nice that I decided I wasn't going to fly it until I had some experience under my belt. Buddy boxed it a couple of times since then, but mostly it stayed in the hangar. I bought a J3 Piper Cub earlier this year and got it assembled with a Saito 4 stroke Nitro installed, but couldn't take off on my own not being used to a tail dragger. I pulled out the Kadet Sr. Sport again last week and started practicing ground handling without the wings on it.

I have since been through 12 batteries and can now easily take off and land, although landing has been a bit challenging as I find this plane is even more floaty than the Apprentice. She flies nice and I haven't felt the need to have an instructor buddy box with me.

Yesterday at our airfield before our club meeting I was flying it when a different instructor challenged me to do a loop. I had never done a loop with the Kadet before, but got up about 5 mistakes high and tried it. Just as the nose started coming over half way through the loop I heard something pop on the plane. I completed the loop with no problem, but decided to bring her in to see what caused the noise. I was afraid I had put too much stress on her and had damaged the wings. Coming down the back side of the runway to set up for my approach I noticed she was loosing altitude and adding throttle did not help. I was able to set her up for the approach, but didn't have enough altitude to clear the top of the soy beans at the end of our runway. She caught the beans with her landing gear and gently came to a stop with the nose sticking about 3" out of the first row of beans and pointing toward the runway.

When I went to retrieve her the first thing I noticed was there was no damage, thank goodness!! The second thing I noticed was the propeller and spinner missing. Brought her back to the pits and walked to the other end of the runway where I quickly found the spinner and propeller. (Well, at least part of it!!) Unbeknownst to me I had just done my first unintended dead stick.

Threw another prop on her (new out of the package) and taxied her out to the runway again. I quickly noticed that between 40-70% throttle that she was making a bad noise. Suspected an unbalanced prop as I had checked for runout on the prop shaft prior to taking her up again, and didn't notice anything. Took her back up and she flew like normal except for the noise. Pulled the prop today and it was way out of balance. Did a bunch of sanding and finally got it close to balanced. No more ugly noise at mid throttle. I am running an E-flite Power 46, 60A E-flite Pro Switch Mode ESC/BEC and 5S 5000mAh lipos. Ran through four batteries tonight with no problems and even did three more loops with no issues.

I really enjoy flying this plane now that I have the confidence that I'm not going to crash and destroy her by making a rookie mistake. Our annual club SIG Fly In is this Sunday and I am looking forward to putting her up quite a few times.

I have a SIG/Seagull Models Spacewalker II ARF in the box that I will soon be starting to assemble. Looking forward to getting my second SIG plane in the air soon!!

I love hearing about a successful deadstick with no damage! I balance my props when I first get them home that way I know they are balanced already when I need them.

Hey, old rc guy Jeff. Your story started out with me thinking of a bad ending, luckily it wasn't. I don't understand how an unbalanced prop would make a popping sound, and then you said you lost power. I was thinking you might want to check your motor mount and connections. Enjoy your Kadet.

He didn't have the prop tight enough and lost it at full power doing a loop, that was the pop. When you use an unbalanced prop on an electric, they make a horrible buzzing sound that resonates through the entire plane.

Good job on bringing in your first dead stick, you are a better flyer than you think you are. Keep practicing those off power landings so when a real dead stick happens, you will be better prepared.

I love it when a plan works out - and when there's no plan and IT STILL WORKS OUT - it's AWESOME!

Congrats on your first deadstick!!

Does anyone else notice how deadsticks can be their best landings? I guess because you are totally focused, and know you can't do a go-around.

Yeah I think that's true Rod I never thought of that before. I learned and soloed on a Kadet Mark II in the 80's and my instructor taught me to "keep her close" after "5 minutes or so" and be ready to bring her in after the engine quits. I wouldn't try that today yet it was just how it was done then without losing planes. No computer radios or timers

I hardly ever think about going around. unless i am practicing touch and goes, and then I come in at idle as if i am truly landing, then I let it roll a bit, maybe even letting the tail wheel touch down on a TD, then power up and take off again. Sometimes i repeat this many times in a row, just staying in the landing pattern. Makes for fewer surprises on landing with practice like this for me.

I think my post was a bit confusing. The propeller pictured was the one that came off. I believe it was cracked and I didn't notice it, then when I did the loop, the stress caused it to come apart, which caused it to separate from the plane, Prop adapter and spinner came off together with the broken propeller. The replacement propeller was the one that caused the unusual noise between 40-70% throttle. Don't remember if I posted it above or not, but it was way out of balance. I balanced it and flew it on Thursday with no issues. Made sure the prop adapter was on VERY tight too!!

For those who might be in the market - there's an original 1972 Kadet kit available on the bay right now. Straight-up price is $100. It's listed as a Mk-I kit but it's not, it's the original RC31 kit.

Nice, too bad I am kitted out. I have enough kits for the next 5 years, and then some. That and bay don't like me, my account is screwed up, and I can't get in. The only kit at the moment that I might decide to buy would be a Liberty Sport. Why, I have no freaking clue.

I can relate on both those statements! I have more than enough but there are a couple kits I would jump at if I had the cash. I still need to pick up a short kit I have been putting off for one of my current projects.

Well, the two big planes I have kits for, I may hold of on building until I can find a larger field to fly at. My current one does not bode well for large, non 3D type airplanes that need runway. Too many obstructions to deal with, which is why my Thunderbolt is back on the bench and not in the ready to fly state. Until the owners do what they have been saying, and remove the trailers and cut down some trees, I may not return next year. My planes are getting more expensive now that I am really into it. This has me questioning whether or not a 14' WS plane is really the right thing for me to have now. Where the heck would I fly it.

Wow, I had totally forgotten I had become a member of this brotherhood.

I'm putting the finishing touches on a Kadet MkII. I hope to get it airborne this up coming week. It has a new engine in it that I have to break in. Earlier this year I picked up a already built Kadet Jr off of ebay. I thought I could get it flying fast but I've had nothing but problems with. I got so frustrated by it, I bought what I needed to build a Swizzle Stick out of it using some parts from the plane. The cool thing is the Kadet Jr wing is the same size as the swizzle sticks wing. I'll have the fuse built and ready to cover and paint in just a few days. Hopefully I'll get both flying soon, keeping my fingers crossed.

Please post some pictures I would love to see your Kadet II. Swizzle Stick reminds me of the old nylon props you had to boil to keep them from shattering years ago. I have a few laying around for kids to see but they are only good for use as Swizzle Sticks!

acdii, I was just reading over some posts and I noticed your from Capron Illinois, where do you fly at? I'm from Machesney Park and I fly, (show up) at Kieselburg Forest Perserve.

Big Foot, just at the edge of the state north of Harvard. I stopped at that preserve a couple years ago, but the cost to fly there and the distance was prohibitive, though it looks like a nice open place to fly from, no obstacles to avoid when taking off and landing, but it sure makes you a pilot when you have them. That is until that elusive barn leaps out in front of your plane. LOL

LOL, I hear ya. Kieselburg isn't to bad on cost, (I think), not like the big field over on Meridian Rd in rockford. They are crazy expensive.

I want to build a 1/4 scale bird but I'm wondering if I'll have the room at Kieselburg to fly it. Time will tell.

Well 1/4 scale that is the question. 1/4 Scale Cub would be easy to fly there, 1/4 scale B-25, not so much. My club has no meetings, we show up when we can, and it's $50 a year. The Rockford site is club dues plus the park permit, so I haven't looked further into it, though if they dont remove the trailers at the end of the field next year I wont re-up. There used to be a decent field near where I work up in Monroe, but they didn't renew the lease due to it being next to the airport, so that never happened either. It's hard trying to find a decent place to fly that doesn't take an hour or more to get to.
