Default Looking for Recomendations

Okay, and some of you are sick of hearing about this kit, but here goes.. I am looking for recommendations from those of you who kitbuild and do your own engine, servo, stuff. I am building a guillow fairchild 25 span and I need a 6 watt motor. also, I dont want this to be a fast airplane, or too heavy so I am sticking with maybe 2 50 mah batts. Is this correct? also, I am doing this rudder only because its no aerobat. and again its a simple flyer. Can anyone help me get the right package here?...I need the motor, batts, servo for rudder and esc. and I have to keep it light and the plane slow. This is my first from scratch RC project and I want to get it right. Thanks... PS: while I am at it...can you check this thread if you havent seen it and give me some input?..thanks http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/ques...1133500/tm.htm

Also heres a link to the same kit I found on the web, so you can get an idea of what I am working on and its size http://www.menet.umn.edu/~curt/Models/FairchildF-24/

Hi janet,

I would suggest asking this question in the Electrics Forum if you don't get an answer here.

Yeah, you should have posted this in electrics.

But as long as we are all here....

I'd have to say that if you want to use any sort of radio in this model then you may as well plan on using a motor such as the GWS Lite Stik series and prop it for less current so you can use a 6 cell or, better yet but more costly, a 2 cell Lithium poly pack. There's not a lot of wing area and since most radios NEED 4 cells unless you're using some old time escapement stuff you may as well power the motor with at least 4 cells.

Regarding equipment weight. Parkflyer radios have come a very long way in the past couple of years. THe basic micro gear now for a single channel weighs less than a typical escapement or magnetic actuator and reciever of 20 years ago.

To help you get some idea of where to go with this the Fairchild is not going to be very happy at a ready to fly weight of much more than 6 ounces. The radio, motor and flight batteries are going to want to be kept down to about 4 to 4 1/2 ounces of that. And lighter overall would be much better. 5 ounces RTF would be ideal.

An option that would guarantee success would be to drop the radio if you can't spring for the light gear and just make it free flight. Then a smaller motor and 2, 3 or 4 cells as required would work. Then your 50 or 80 mah cells would work for the short motor runs and light wing loading. But with radio in the model you won't get away with any less than a typical modern parkflyer I'm afraid. Or best of all some of the super small and lightweight indoor radio systems would work super great in this.

You've mentioned "escapement" on more than one occasion with this project. Just what gear were you thinking of using?

Oh, God I have no clue what escapement is..The one thing I do know is If I can get away with a 2 to 3 minute flight I dont care what equipment I use, But I would like to steer it with at least rudder. Esc can get thrown overboard. I do have a small ...motor I think its a kenway that I tried on (2) 50 mah cells nicad, and it seems to run good, its from my former estes skyranger salvage.

can I put this skyranger equipment in? with the smaller motor?.... I dont need a star flyer mind you. Just something that will be airworthy and that I can have some control over....[:-]

Hi Janet. Look at these GWS servos and reciever. They have the BEC so you don't need a reciever battery, and you can get them with a built in speed control for the motor. I used one on my Tigermoth and it worked great. The servos are tiny!! The rec is about the size of a quarter. I think they will be good for what you are doing, and the bat that runs the reciever will run the motor too. You can get package deals with 2 servos, the rec and the bat for about $80.

I don't see why the Skyranger gear wouldn't work as long as it fits within the weights I listed before. If it doesn't add much weight keep the ESC as it is usually the part that regulates the motor battery voltage down so it can work the radio gear.

For a motor I still think you should get a GWS motor from a Lite Stik. I believe these are called the A series motors at the stores or online sites that sell them. They work on 6 or 7 cells and can be used with 110 mah or more NiMH packs. 110 mah packs will give about a 3 or 4 minute flight.

Hint, the 9 volt NiMH radio batteries being sold in the stores quite cheaply are 150 mah packs. There's 7 cells in these and they are quite small and light. For the current draw of the GWS motor they should operate just fine. In the US I suspect you can find them for about $7 or $8 each. Get a connector with wires from Radio Shack to adapt to the airborne gear and you're in.

Hey again Janet.
I'd agree with BMatthews on this. The GWS "A" drive motors (with gearbox) can be had for about $20. Unfortunately (Flyboy) the GWS receivers and servos are probably still too big for this project. From all that I've read, the Skyranger radio gear should work, but the motor may not have the 'oomph' needed, especially on 2.4 volts (2- NiCd cells). As has been said, you'll most likely need a minimum of 4 cells for radio gear, and 7 for the motor. (With an ESC the 7 will power the radio too.)

It sounds like you're getting excited about this. [sm=lol.gif]

Oh yeah I am...getting excited DB......and aggravated..I dont know anything about radios.and servos.. Heres what I have . I have the skyranger simple transmitter with only left and right pulse rudder at 27mhz. I simply want a short powered flight that I can steer a bit. I think this equipment will do the job. As long as its not too heavy. How do i know?..how do I calculate wingload? DB?..I am not going to buy a radio for this one. I will when I buy a GWS pico cub. This is a fun project though. Any thoughts?..Mike Taylor...are u out there?..... Okay Bmathews..I guess I have to weigh the gear and be sure I am around 4 ounces?..
