SIG Kadet MK II Build
#229
Yeah Mike, that's part of it among several other things, so no I haven't made any more progress although I really want to. Unfortunately I am probably going to be pretty well tied up for at least the next several weeks, but hopefully I can sneak in a few short building sessions.

My Feedback: (6)
I keep saying I am going to work on the 182 this weekend but I haven't been able to. Between the recovery from my surgery and having a 10 month old in the house I just haven't got around to working on it. I know exactly what I want to do but haven't done it. I am about to order the vinyl decals I need to make it a CAP airplane. I am using Decal-it he does good work. Delivery time varies, he has a day job.

Hey Don!! Any progress on the Kadet?
#232
Unfortunately, none. Between projects around the house, a few other priorities and the Doctors cuttin' on me, I didn't have the time or the money most of the past 4 or 5 months. Sometimes life just gets in the way! I was hoping we would have a nice long fall but the polar express has already moved in. I sure wasn't ready for it to get this cold this early. On the bright side though, it should allow me to have more time in the shop. I have started cleaning the shop up, it was a disaster after the summer projects. Now I just need to get my head back into the build and get going.

I hope you guys haven't given up on me. Life took me on a few detours this past year, but I haven't given up. I want to thank everyone that has participated in this thread. I really appreciate the advise, opinions, tips, and compliments given. Y'all a great bunch of guys.
Finally got my head back into the build and ready to move forward on it. Today I marked out and cut the slot for the vert stab and could not help but mock-up the tail feathers.
Now I need to cut the slot for the rudder pushrod and wrap my head around gluing the stabs on correctly.

Glad you're back on the build. I know how it goes with things getting in the way of building. We have a 5 month old now, but I've still managed to work on a PT-40 for my son.
I forgot that I was going to post some pictures of my Kadet Mark II covered with Koverall and dope. I'll try and do that tonight when I get home.

I did find a little time to lay out and cut the pushrod slot today. I hope it is large enough. I guess I should do a complete assembly of all the gear (after I glue the stabs on) to ensure nothing is binding before I begin to cover/finish anything.
The extra time and trouble I took on the wing and horiz stab saddles (post #114) is paying off now as the wing and horiz stab line up nicely and easily in the same plane. Everything fits together nicely with no fuss.

The pushrods were practically the only thing that I actually changed for my Mk-II. I've never trusted balsa pushrods, made mine out of 1/4" dowels. Otherwise, just like the plans - they work great. The Dubro pushrod exits are wonderful. They really do "finish" the slot.
Your bird's looking good Don. Just remember, only 21 more snowfalls 'til Spring. (LOL)

I was thinking the same, about the pushrods, but was hesitant to speak up, not knowing DBD1's experience level.
I would suggest using hardware store dowel rod, instead of the balsa.
The balsa pushrods will probably suffice. Sig has been selling these kits for years. The system must work.
Experience has me wanting to make a change however, but I seldom follow the instructions. LOL

Yeah, only reason I mentioned it was that when I built my first Kadet (1973) I broke one of the rods and had to glue it back together - lasted 40 years then, right up to last December (2013) when I retired her. But, I also broke a rod when I built my CG Sr. Falcon (1974) - replaced them with dowels, plane's still flying with them. Now, I'm restoring an old CG Eaglet and in the process of taking it apart for repairs I broke BOTH balsa rods. Needless to say, they're being replaced with dowels.
Y'er right, most kits have the balsa rods and they seem to work just fine for 99% of the guys out there, but I have ZERO luck with them.
Oh, yeah - just for giggles, pics of the Eaglet as it was when I started and as it is right now:
Just something to keep me busy while I wait for Spring planting.

My old Mk I with MK II wing has balsa PR. I am going to refit it with carbon fiber arrow shafts I got at Wally World a couple of years ago for a couple bucks each. I since moved and I haven't seen them at the local store, or even online for that price. I recently picked up some 1/4 inch dia by 30 inch long bamboo "smores" sticks, for $1.00 for 6 at Ocean State. I may try them on the Kadet and save the arrow shafts for a more demanding use. The bamboo is stiffer and stronger than balsa, and equal. I think, to dowel.
Cold and snowy here, and my "shop" isn't heated, so am not building much now. Happy New Year to All.
Sincerely, Richard

In the future I will use something other than balsa for pushrods. For the Kadet however, I had already made them up out of 5/16 square balsa. I was concerned about the amount they would flex, so I cut some carbon fiber strips and used thin CA to attach them to two perpendicular sides of each pushrod, which stiffened them up considerably.

I just didn't want to over complicate your build.
Sometimes the more experienced tend to suggest things that me be simple for us, but a nightmare for a beginner. Since I feel that the balsa pushrod is time tested, I chose not to speak up.
Your mods should improve the stiffness immensely. If you encounter problems down the road, it won't be difficult to install dowel pushrods as replacements.
Dave obviously thought it was best to speak up right away. I certainly don't object to his decision.
As you will soon discover, there are several methods to accomplish our goals in this hobby. My instruction methods may be a little different than Dave's, but rest assured, we're both looking out for your best interests.
