.52 would be a good fit. I have an OS 52 in my LT-40 and it pulls that plane around nicely, so it should be plenty for the midstar.

I think I would have to get a .56 in Saito or O.S, don't think you can get the .52 any more in either one of those brands, but thanks for the size input.

ASP/Magnum still makes the 52 four stroke. I agree it would pull it around fine and get good mileage. I lean towards the OS or Saito offerings. My Magnum 52 is OK just not as refined as my Saitos or OSessess. My Great Planes Escapade probably has a similar size and weight to the Mid-Star and my 52 pulled it around well, a good balance of power, weight and fuel economy. No 3D, no unlimited vertical, just good all around performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtBm...SXPIF7UE5LWLDw

Got a Saito 56 in my Mid-Star 40 and I feel it's perfect power. It's definitely not under-powered and will fly through loops as large as I want to make them!

UPF-7 did you have to play around with the cg, or did the weight of the .56 Saito balance pout fairley well?( I know the .56 Saito weighs 15oz. and a little change)

+1 on the Saito. I just got my FG-11 for the T-Clips 70 and it is a perfect fit.

Hi aggieman, I actually balanced my Mid-Star by putting the battery just aft of the servos. ( I could do this because I made an access hatch with the fuse cut-out hole on the bottom side just behind the wing trailing edge.) In hindsight, this was not really necessary as it would only have needed just a bit of tailweight to get the cg where I wanted it. I've got my cg set just behind the spar. Running a 12-6 APC on the Saito 56. On a side note, I clipped the wing one bay on each side to improve the roll rate. Hope this helps!

That should be a good flyer, I did something similar to my 4*120, clipped the wing one bay and put on rounded wingtips. Fantastic flyer, PITA to land. How does it fly with the 12X6? I tried one on my OS 52 on my LT-40 and it slowed it down too much, run an 11x6 on it now and love the hang time on it.

Hello acdii,
Happy to hear your enjoying your LT-40! SIG makes great kits! My Saito 56 seems happiest with the APC 12-6. I've experimented with many sizes and brands but I just end up back with the 12-6 APC. The Mid-Star flies fantastic as I have it set up. It is the second one I've built and always comes with me to the field. The first, which also had a Saito 56, was built totally stock. It was a great flyer too but the roll was was a little slow for my taste. On both Mid-Stars, I used LT-25 main gear to get adequate clearance for the 12" prop and a Sullivan tailwheel unit. Funny thing is I've built two Four-star 60s also and the first was stock and the second with clipped wings. I much prefer the clipped wing version.

Absolutely!! Should have mentioned the SIG B'hoodbefore, sorry 'bout dat. Hey, gotcha logged with #133. Welcome to the SIG Brotherhood too!!

My own MidStar-40's got an older OS46FX driving her and it's more than enough. I'm NO kind of knowledgeable in this but I should think something like a Saito 56 would do just fine - I hear nothing but GOOD things about that engine.

And here's the SIG Brotherhood, as I've got it today:

If I wanted to convert my midstar to a taildragger, would how do I know what size tail to use VS how large my main wheels are(very rough grass field, almost need to do the tundra tire type of setup) have not built the kit yet, but I need some feedback.

No hardfast rules on wheelsize aggieman. If you use larger than recommended main wheels, just try to find the lightest ones you can. As far as the TW goes, the Sullivan bracket for 2-6lb planes with a 1/2" or 3/4' dia wheel would be fine. You can use the stock TW wire that comes with the kit but it tends to break after repeated flexing during use. I used the kit TW wire on my first Mid-Star and it eventually broke. That's why I used a Sullivan bracket on my second one.

Aggieman,

I built my Mid-Star 40 as a Tail dragger. It's powered with an OS .46 AXII. I used stock wheels and landing gear. Flies Great and very fast. I've had no problems with wheels being too small. Landing on Grass only. I love this plane.

I would just use the aluminum gear in the kit. Move the gear up so the trailing edge of the gear is even with the leading edge of the wing. You will probably need to add some ply re-enforcement to bolt the gear to. Add a tail wheel and you are good to go. I like the Sullivan tail wheel brackets also. I fly off of grass with 2.5" or 3" wheels.

On using the aluminum main gear ,should it be where the axles are instead of the t.e. of the top of the gear itself, the reason I ask that is that different mfg. aluminum gear aren't the same measurments are they?

since this is mid wing plane, you can put the axles in line with the leading edge. The first post was for a low wing plane, sorry. If you use the gear in the kit, just slide them forward.

My 4-Star 40 has arrived. This will be my 3rd build. This plane will be powered with an OS .46 AX. Previously I have built exactly according to the kit plans. On the 4-Star I plan on making a few mods.

An Aileron servo in each wing.
Sheet the LE top & bottom.
Sheet the Turtle deck.
Add Fiberglass Specialties cowling. (Cap 21 style)
Round the wingtips.
Reinforce the Tail feathers with Triangle stock.
Reinforce the fuselage at Trailing edge of wing.
Relocate Main Landing Gear to Leading edge of wing.

Having only followed Instructions in the past, I am interested in any and all tips, advice and personal step by step instructions that any 4-Star 40 builders have to offer.

Thank you,

Thank you,

Many of your mods add weight behind the cg. Are you worried about balance ?

Tom,
Certainly I always concern myself about the weight and CG. In the past I've been able to balance my planes without adding any weight to the plane. As far as total weight, both my previous planes were powered using an identical engine. My LT-40, although sluggish, seemed to have plenty of get up and go considering it weighed 7-1/2Lbs. The Mid-Star-40 flies darn fast and is very aerobatic. It weighs 5-1/2lbs. True, no mods. I am open to reconsider my mods. May I ask how many, if any of these mods would you keep or pitch?

Moving the landing gear to the wing might cause it to nose over on the ground. Any particular reason to move them back?
