Hi Jeff,
What club are you flying with? I live just South of you, between Bloomington and Bedford.

Hi Rob,

I'm flying with the Monroe County guys out of Bloomington. I used to race go karts in Springville back in the early 80's on a dirt track in some guy's back yard. Memories. :-)

Anyway, one of the Monroe County guys maintains a field here in Martinsville also, so the nearest field is about a 10 minute drive from home.

You should join us sometime. Tuesday is "Trainer Night" at the Monroe County field on Wylie Road.

Understood. Original post corrected. :-)

(This is my first attempt at assembling/building anything other than one of FliteTest's Speed Build kits.)

Hey Jeff!! Welcome to RCU, the SIG Brotherhood, the SIG Kadet Brotherhood and RC flying in general. You've got 2 great planes there - the Apprentice is a rather reliable/predictable plane to learn on and the whole Kadet line is the greatest trainer aircraft ever designed (but then, I'm rather prejudiced - I love Kadets). Gotta tell ya, you're doing it right - club & instructor on buddy-box. Can't get better than that. It's the surest way to learn with minimum risk - well done!!

Hey, we gotcha listed here with #123, and in the SIG Kadet Brotherhood with #162.
(Above cross-posted to SIG Kadet Brotherhood)

And here's the SIG Brotherhood, as I've got it today:

You'll love the Senior Sport. I have a .91 4 stroke in mine, and fly at less than half throttle.

She does nice, smooth, manuevers. You instructor may buddy box you on yours..

The wing strut comment confuses me. There aren't any.

I have my Rascal nearly completed. I didn't care for the push rod ends, so I'm swapping them out for longer (stronger) 2/56 wire. (I did the same on my Senior Sport).

After that, the tail wheel steering and prop mounting are all that's left.

That's what I have to figure out. I want to put struts on it, just have to work with my fellow club members and figure out what material to use, etc. The FG-17 will have the Kadet a bit over powered and even though I plan on limiting throttle via the transmitter I still want the extra safety of the struts to minimize the risk of folding the wings if it gets in trouble.

Thanks for the welcome!

Know the Joanne dress liner fairly well - tried it on my latest C/L Skylark ... it wrinkled with the nitrate dope as it dried. Sheesh! Ended up using my old tried & true silkspan, which is what most of my C/L planes are covered with. Silkspan works super well for C/L but I'd never use it on RC.

Kinda what I thought, but figured I would ask. If I order 5 pkgs. of the 5 yd. Koverall, It'll ship free too. Thanks Guys.

You just can't beat a Koverall finish. It's a lot of work but once you're done you
never have to worry about tightening it up.

Jeff I think you may be adding complexity with no benefit. Struts will require surgery to the wings, and fuselage, which will be easily seen, unless you re-cover the airframe with an opaque covering.

The Senior Sport will not require struts when using the Saito FG-17.

If you go ahead with the project,, struts can be made from hardwood, or aluminum.

Here are a few pics showing hardwood strut construction.

Don't forget. You'll need to place hard mounts in the wings and fuselage, in order to secure the struts. They need to be place so that they are structural, making the struts functional.

Adding struts to to a high wing aircraft is very simple.

Remove the covering from 1 bay & epoxy a hardwood block in the corner between a rib & the main spar. I use the brass thread inserts W/a little bit of epoxy. Re-cover the bay & you now have a solid strut anchor point.

Are there any threads on the 4-STAR 64 EG ARF with electric set up? Would like to know what people think of the plane and what motor, ESC & battery your using.

I maidened my Rascal 72 ARF today. She's a keeper, flying well on an Eflight 46 outrunner, 65 amp esc and 3500 4s pack.

Steve - I found ONE 4-STAR 64 thread but it was referring to a guy that wanted the "kit". I know NOTHING about electric set-up though, so we'll have to wait for one of the electric guys to chime in here. For sure, one (or more) will.

Yo, I love your handle - great pick. For sure, you've got two of the best planes - if there really IS a "best" when it comes to SIG. Lemme welcome you to RCU and the SIG Brotherhood- we've gotcha logged here with #124.

Here's the full list of the SIG Brotherhood, as I've got it today (3 columns):

you can use this, or equivalent for the power.

http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/De...odID=EFLM4060B

This for the ESC

http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/De...odID=EFLA1080B

and use a 6S 4500-5000 MAH Lipo for the fuel.

The ARF manual will already have the information you need for setting up the motor and the battery tray is already built in, so its just a matter of matching up the motor and ESC. Also if you RTFM you will find information on motor specs, its on page 2. The motor and ESC I listed above should make that plane go vertical until you either run out of juice or can't see it anymore. Its a 470kv 1800 watts. Start out with a 16X6 prop and go from there. Keep in mind these planes like to float, so if you want to slow it down for landing, reduce the pitch on the prop, though being electric, you can turn off the motor for landing, cant do that for glow or gas.

Hey Mike G, its August 1st, any updates n the T-clips 70? Though I have several on the bench, I would like to get an idea when it might arrive so I can get an engine for it. I decided against the Magnum 91, don't want to over power it, so maybe a Saito in the 70 range instead. OS 70 already spoken for.

Has anyone considered build a 4*60 kit with a gas engine like the evo 15gx? I like glow engines but people are moving to gas.

Depends on the weight. Compare it to the recommended engines in weight and see. If the weight works out, then it would be a good engine for it. I fly a 4*120 with a DLE 20, and its a good performer.

Thank you very much, I don't have the original plans and it doesn't show on the ones I have.

Thanks for the welcome!

Hi Jeff,

Don't let these guys rattle you :-)

I always had struts on my Kadet variations, They look cool and definitely add to the wings overall strength. I would recommend using K&S Streamline Tubing 3/4",if your thinking dual struts, then make the rear strut with 1/2". I usually fill the strut with either balsa or bass wood and epoxy. Mounting attachments are a bit of a problem because it's an ARF, usually they are implanted during the build process.

I'm not trying to rattle anybody. I am trying to provide information that will save work. In my view, struts are not necessary, with the power combo presented by ORCG. He stated that he wanted them because his model will be over powered.

If he wants them for cosmetic reasons, there is certainly nothing wrong with the idea.

As you say. K&S tubing is not structural, and requires internal reinforcement. If I were to add wing struts, I'd use balsa clad aluminum,, as I did on this Ryan.

Keep in mind, he wants to add struts to an ARF, which is more work that incorporating them into an airframe while it is being built.
