I have not read through this whole thread. However I made the mistake of plowing through the page before this one.
Since I have just a few Sig kits I drop in once in a while and have a look.

Anyway, I recently had the occasion to re-read both of these Biographies of Glen and Hazel on the AMA site.
If you have not read them before, they are very much worth the read...

And for grins, here is a picture of the Sig Skybolt sitting with the real one.....Picture Courtesy of "SIG"

Beautiful!

I got talked out of a Skybolt kit back in the early 90's. I wish I never sold it.

Hey Rick, Thanks for getting us back on track...again! Hope things are well down Texas way. I've been a Sig fan for many years and the Skybolt is one of my favorites. I'm flying one currently and have another kit still in shrink wrap, just in case. Great plane!

For a bunch of guys from different countries/services who don't normally fly together, in airliners that were never designed for "aerobatics", that's pretty awesome.

Yeah, the comments are rather typical for the web (unfortunately). I've seen the film of the 707 rolls - THAT was awesome.

Hey RICKSTUBBZ! My regrets, concerning the past couple pages. It's not always that way. Flyer's right though, if you'd care to join just say so. And, we're talking something like 50 pages here, if you were thinking of catching up from the beginning - and it's all great. You wouldn't believe some of the planes and people that are in this group - a great bunch of guys.

Ok guys, I don't mind if we all get off topic in here a bit and talk about different things at times. I'm not going to get wrapped around the axle about any of it. But we all need to calm down and and take a deep breath. Here's my philosophy for moderating threads here at RCU. I kind of look at them like being at the flying field. We are all at the flying field and all of our buddies are sitting around under the shade shelter watching flying going on. Of course the topic on conversation is going to be mostly about flying, heck we're the the field for pete's sake.... "He Joe, how you coming on that new P-51?"... "Wow, you really did a good job on that 4-Star Larry!!" and so forth. But occasionally somebody is going to stray off the topic and they are going to talk about things not related to RC or RC flying. Things like family, friends, or just life in general that aren't related to RC, but are things that you do talk about with you friends are things that you are going to talk about at the field. And usually they will come up from time to time and after talking about them we'll all go back to talking about RC sooner or later. I try to be lenient about it because in the real world situation like the flying field I sure would hate to be sitting there talking about flying and then as soon as I go off the topic of flying and ask my friend about his son somebody runs from behind the bushes and smacks me with a huge stick and yells "NO OFF TOPIC CONVERSATION. GET BACK ON TOPIC.!!!!". And that's how I try to moderate the forums here on RCU, as well as the rest of my moderators as well, treat the forums. We want threads like this one here to be a friendly place for people to come together to talk about a topic that we all share and love, and in this case it being a love for RC in general and Sig specifically.

As for the build thread, I would agree that this thread would not be the appropriate place for anybody to be running a build thread here. This is more of a general information thread as opposed to a "all encompassed thread". I don't mind if somebody runs something that runs long long like all the steps in doing a wing, for instance. But if you are going to run a build thread then you need to start up your own thread and run it there instead of here in this thread. Hopefully that will help everybody involved in all aspects.

I’d be obliged to take a number in the SIG Brotherhood. I don’t have much in the way of contributions to make for now. Even though the Biographies have been around for a while - I did want to share those links about Glenn and Hazel in the case they had not been posted on this thread before.

A few years ago I finally retired my Smith Miniplane. It was built in 1985 and was flying when I retired it at the end of 2009. My favorite plane for a long time. It was built as a sport plane and not scale. I contributed a bit to the Sig Smith Miniplane (started by RV7garage) build with a few post.

As a flight instructor, I have had the chance to fly several other Sig kits including the “Astro Hog”. I still say that ole airplane was ahead of it’s time.

I support SIG when I can...Buy caster oil from them and mix my own fuel. Not too long ago I had the chance to spend some money on a few kits. So I bought the Citabria, 1/6 clipped cub, and Kobra. No plans to build any of them just yet. But I have them for when the day gets here. I still need to buy a “Something Extra”.

Here is my "Smith" when built in '85

And this is what it looked like in 2007

And here is a link to a video

Because of some other issues that have come up, as well as a few health issues, it's not nearly as far as long as I wish it was. But I'm hoping to get it move along here now that we are moving into the colder parts of winter and then I can get the build thread done up on it. The nice thing about where I live down here in SW Oklahoma is that we never really shut down flying for winter so we always seem to get flying days to maiden new planes out, so when I get it built I will be able to get it flown for you all. Will definitely keep everybody posted.

- Sig Liberty Sport (NIB)
- Sig 1/6-scale Clipped Wing J-3 Cub (NIB - electric-power planned)
- Sig Ryan STA (NIB)
- Sig 1/4-scale Spacewalker II (NIB)
- Sig 1/4-scale Clipped Wing J-3 Cub (NIB)

So, as you can see, I am a *big* Sig Fan. I like Sig's, "box-O-lumber" approach to their Builder Kits. Very challenging, and very rewarding.

I also have a Sig Rascal 72 ARF (Saito 56) that's keeping me flying while I am temporarily away from the building board (home remodel project).

Please add me to the Brotherhood!

I'm going to encourage Dave to place special entry requirements for you to enter the Brotherhood. I think that you should be required to purchase a 1/3 Spacewalker before being allowed entry.

Kidding aside. Your involvment will bring a vast amount of aeranautical expertise to this thread, along with your excellent building skills

I'd like to welcome you aboard, even before Dave issues you a number.

No problem, Tom! I'm putting you on Point to distract my wife while I sneak yet another gigantic box-O-lumber past her and into my kit stash! LOL!

Thank you, Tom. The only thing I'm bringing is enthusiasm and support for one of the oldest surviving kit manufacturers in the hobby.

Thanks Dave!

I appreciate your offer to "take care" of any of my kit(s) in case I run out of room for them. That's mighty kind of you! LOL! Sad part is, sooner or later, I'll have to face the reality of not getting to build all the kits I've collected. Although, I like having that problem!

Not sure if you've seen Tom's 1/3-scale Spacewalker Build on that "other" website or not. It's a very nice build!

Thanks for the number, and the welcome.

Yeah, the Liberty Sport was a hard-snag. Took a while to get it.

I read a build thread on one of the other sites where the builder (Gerald) was very conscience of weight and went electric. My plan is to do the same:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...=liberty+sport

Looks like fun, doesn't it?

I have been buggin Mike Gretz every time I see him to find some way of getting the kits back out. My friend has one, and it is so short and stubby that it took a lot of lead in the nose to balance even with the big OS 4 stroke on it. Once he realized it was so tail heavy and got it closer to the correct CG it was a blast to watch him fly it. It has had so many repairs though that it looks pretty shabby and would love to grab 2 kits for us to have a club build. ( we are a club of 2 ) I would probably build 2 of them, one in scale colors and the other gussied up like my Cub. I'm just goofy that way.

Well, if you could just find one kit, you could build two. Fiberglass Specialties carries the engine cowl and wheel pants. I've already gotten them for my kit.

As far as Sig re-releasing the 'Sport, I dunno. I'd like to see them re-release the Morrisey Bravo. Overtime I see one on the auction site, the bids are already more than I'd pay for one ($400+). Sometimes, I wish some of the kit manufacturers would offer their plans - if the model of subject could be built by plans alone.

Yep, the plans are the hard part, I could build it off plans if needed, but have to have the full plans first, and SIG doesn't sell their plans, only manuals.

Sig doesn't own the Bravo, as far as I know.

AMR says that they have it now. I keep reading promises of a kit re-release.

More kits, from any manufacturer, would be nice. There seems to be plenty that sell kits for smaller airframes, but very few in the larger sizes that I prefer.
