When you get something busted up that much wouldn't it be better to just build an all new wing, just asking.

Actually it looks a lot worse than it really is . Its just the sheeting that is damaged and everything else looks solid . It was repaired before but the balsa that was used is very soft and light ? The same stuff was used to repair the fuse and I could put my fingers right through it with little problem .

Sounds like a case of using what was on hand instead of ordering new wood.

Yeah, the Hog actually doesn't look too bad at all. Fuse looks GOOD, wing just needs a bit of TLC - no problem. I'm with acdii, it's a SIG plane - therefore it's definitely worth saving as much of the original as possible.

That Cub bipe is looking better every day.

Figured out the door on it today, going to post some pics on it. Other than adding a couple pieces to the tail, and some shaping, its ready for covering. I think I finally nailed down the covering technique with Dope and Koverall. I failed to use Nitrate the first time around, and found it fills the fabric quite nicely with only 2 coats, then 2 coats of clear thinned down, before the color coat, and the finish comes out nice.

The old timers liked to put a little talcum powder in the nitrate dope,to help
fill the weave. I'm going to try it on my next build.

Yes we old-timers used to do that with silk. But that was before they started adding corn starch to the "talcum" powder. I have found it hard to get pure talcum powder, and wonder if the corn starch helps or hinders the fill process, and if it introduces other finishing problems. Did you know that corn starch and water is a non-Newtonian fluid? Don't know if cornstarch and dope is also or not.

I actually want to see the weave on this one. The problem I had with the first one was pinholes in the dope. The parts I did with Nitrate had none, but those I used just Butyrate on had them. It also took a lot of coats for the white to cover where I did not use Nitrate, but 2 coats covered well where I used Nitrate followed by clear.

I've only covered a couple of models with Koverall or ultralight Dacron, but have covered around 25 bigs with Ceconite or Polyfiber cloth. It's just a heavier weight of the same material that gets a little stamp on the edge saying it's OK to trust your life to this stuff. Anyway, interesting trait of synthetic fiber cloth; unlike cotton, Butyrate does not adhere to it. We still use nitrate not only as a filler, but a primer. Without the nitrate you will always get the pin holes because the butyrate 'runs away' from the polyester threads.
On a Super Cub covered with Ceconite 102 (medium weight) it usually takes 3 cross coats of nitrate bushed on, never sprayed, 4 to 6 coats of silver butyrate sprayed on, wet sanded between every other coat and then 3 to 4 color coats plus trim to get a decent finish. The Polyfiber process uses a pink tinted primer/filler that acts more like a thin rubber cement that can't be sanded. The up side of it is it requires fewer coats to fill the weave and can be flattened out with a hot iron once cured.

I have seen that pink stuff being applied to the B-17 rudders recently. Thats good to know about the butyrate and why I had issues. Its all a learning curve, and this plane is covering nice, and quick too. I had the stab and elevators covered in under 2 hours with 2 coats of Nitrate. I gave it another coat this morning and was able to sand the edges of the cloth nice and smooth. I have one side of the wings done with Stix It, will get the other side tomorrow and get the fabric cut for the wings and see if I have enough left to do the fuse. I still need to order a quart of Cub Yellow Dope, so if I need more Koverall, would be nice to know before I order the dope.

Please sign me up.

Just getting back into RC but a huge fan of SIG. Have built and flown two Skybolts, a Kadet and a Hummer. Also built a Ryan STA.

Currently scratch building a Dirty Birdy with SIG wood and look forward to another SIG kit soon.

When wifey and I were at Sig around Labor Day they didn't have any then either. The tee shirts
were kinda sparse too. I wish they would stock up. I would like a hat and a tee shirt.

Try an OS26 Four Stroke on that 4 Star 20.

The EP stands for electric power. I have an e-flite power 10 in it and it seems to do the job.

Quickie update: the Stratus is progressing nicely. I took Don's advise and built a laminated and extended wing joiner from some thin aluminum sheeting that I've got, 1/16" ply and 1/8" balsa sheeting. Cutting through the ribs was easy and the joiner now extends to rib#3 which is the center point of the landing gear mounts. Pretty sure that the wing will survive anything short of a car rolling over it. Just wasn't comfy with the original joiner, nor the fact that wing-mounted landing gear had so little support. I also did the impossible (for me), dihedral is precisely where the plans say it's supposed to be - 5.5". I never do that.

Today is sanding LE & TE for sheeting.

Hey Tom! Welcome to RCU & the SIG Brotherhood. Good to see another brother with a 4*. They're all fun planes to fly. Gotcha logged, #154 is all yours.

And here's the SIG Brotherhood, as I've got it today (3 columns):[TABLE="width: 592"]

I thought I'd post a pic of my resurrected Sig Citabria. I've crashed it twice now, the second time was actually fatal. Sentimentality got the better of me and I fixed it in spite of common sense. This was originally powered by an inverted Saito .56, which bored it into the ground from about 200 feet with no control. The wing was in three pieces and the cabin was completely gone from the spinner to just past mid cabin. I've since gone to electrics and so I converted this one. It's got a .36 size motor from Value Hobbies, 60 amp ESC and runs on 3s batteries. One possible problem with electrics, especially on a high wing plane, is the access to the batteries. On this plane I chose to make a slide out power pod. The battery tray, motor, ESC and cowl are all attached together and locked into the plane at the rear of the battery tray with a spring loaded locking pin. Everything slides out on rails as a unit and the rails help with the structure since the cabin was broken in half. I'm still sorting out a few details and I've yet to balance it. I should have another flight attempt this spring. I blame all crashes on the pilot, who is talking on a cell phone
Rick

That looks great! It's funny I'm building a Kadet Sr. and am doing the same thing, but on mine only the battery slides in and out.

If my Swiss cheese memory serves me correctly, I seem to recall an old kit manufacturer had a system where the engine, tank, and radio system slid out the front after disconnecting the pushrods so it could go into a new airplane. Anyone here less addled minded then me remember this company?

Tower sells a little foam plane that does that now, but I think it was World Engines or Indy Rc that had it in 40 nitro size.
