100% correct Richard!! With the exception of the contact point where the tips meet the last rib there is no point at which the wood is more than about 1/4" thick. Started with the center piece, but the inside out, added 1st piece on each side and cut them out, continued to the end. THEN, I used my dremel to smooth out the inside, which took even more wood out of it.

A lotta fun, all in all.

BTW, she's a bit farther done than just that wingtip. This was her this afternoon, outside in one piece for the first time:

Last can of yellow & thinner for the wings is on the way from SIG, also new wheels (2.75") so she sits higher in the grass and graphics that I sent for, along with my own graphics - all still to go.

Then, she flies!!!!!!!!!!!

Love it...looking forward to the finished product. You guys always come up with some great looking ideas. That wing is reminiscent of a pattern wing. I would love to see her in person when you take her up. I'm betting it flies like it is on rails.

Shameless plug here, I have a maiden scheduled myself for 0-7-hundred tomorrow morning. it has a falcon wing modified to make it just a little swept back, Kadet inspired construction on the booms with laminated ply and balsa, retracts and two 40's. Hoping for a nice stable fun flier that doesn't get stupid on one engine. Wish me luck!

WOW Tony! That's a great lookin' plane! Now THAT'S different.

Yup, the Stratus was a "C"-class pattern ship back in the day. I'm definitely hoping she runs on rails. What few reviews I've found of her have nothing but good things to say about the design, with the exception that she wasn't very popular back in the 60's, for some reason. If I had to guess, it would be that the complexity of the tail must have turned some guys off. IF I were to build another, I'd widen the fuse overall by about 1/2" and I'd probably also lengthen the fuse by about 4" behind the wing - but that's still to be proven in the air. This is only the 2nd bird I've ever had to add lead to the tail, first being the C/L SIG Banshee. The Stratus took 5 oz just barely in front of the tail cone. I know some of the reason is the heavier firewall & bracing, some is the .61 sitting in the nose - that's an engine that could double as a boat anchor.

She's sitting on the dining room table right now as I reset the nose gear just a bit to raise the nose. I noticed that while she was sitting in the grass she looked like she was sitting tail high and when I put the level to her I was right. Nose has to come up near 1/2", which is no problem. Will tackle it in the morning - shouldn't take more than about 2 minutes.

IF you were to do another one, would there be enough room to move that wing saddle forward about an inch. It looks like there is a lot of airplane there now and maybe sliding the wing forward a little would take care of the balance issue without adding more weight. Or is there some other reason for adding length? There are a ton of things I would do different IF I was to do another of mine. (which I doubt but never say never, right!) I know my hindsight is getting better with age, kind of at an inverse relationship to the rate my foresight is deteriorating. I got lucky with my creation and balance came out pretty close, it changes of course when the wheels go up because they retract backward but I figure a little nose heavy with the wheels down when low and slow is better than tail heavy so I'm calling it good. We"ll see tomorrow!!

I have, and currently still fly, a Sig 1/5th Scale Cub and a Sig 1/4 Scale Cub.

Without question, the new design of the 1/5th Scale Cub is one of the best kits I have built. Sig should really consider creating a 1/4 Scale Kit based on this design. If you ever want to build a really fun kit get the 1/5th.

I have a Sig 1/3rd Scale Spacewalker in queue as the next kit to build. The kit was purchased some time ago and is just sitting in my stash.

Nice maiden Tony thanks for sharing it, you even got to test the single engine performance on your first flight! Are you happy with how it flew on one engine?

p.s. I'm with Dave on the trumpets, maybe a drum line would be a good addition as well!

I can honestly say I am very happy with the performance on one engine. When it quit during the maiden I had not tested single engine yet, so from my twin flying experience I instinctively cut the throttle. The plane immediately stopped spinning and I had total control again. I decided to just setup for a landing straight ahead and not take any chances, the plane responded with an effortless landing. That is what you saw in the video. What was not in the video were later flights where I was able to maintain level flight on one engine (either side), return to the pattern and land. Flying any twin on one engine is not something you want to do and does take some experience/luck to accomplish depending on the plane. My goal was to design something able to get back to the field and land when not if (at least in my experience) an engine dies and not have to do what I did on the maiden. As I later learned that day I could have returned to the runway on that landing too but I think it was the right choice at the time.

I'll more than likely do more video in the future and maybe I'll find a nice drum roll to use on the next one

Along the same line, if any of you old fossils can remember that far back the company demo pilot for Rockwell (Bob Hoover) would stunt the Shrike Commander 500S on one engine and then he would feather the second engine and do an inside loop with no engine running! To top it all off the FAA pulled his license due to age and he got a court order restoring it! He retired from the aerobatics circuit several years later and I believe is still alive and kicking in his 90s. He is probably still flying too.

Speaking of flying, going to the Fly in June 12-14. Getting my trailer all setup with lighting, and packing the planes for the trip. I may even bring my Biper Cub even though it is far from completed, but still looks pretty good. Was hoping to have it done by the fly in, but had more pressing things to do. My regular Cub is done and flown, so it will be there along with my other SIG planes.

Great video Tony!!

Nope, she hasn't been up quite yet but probably will later this week. I'm just re-going over things (for the umpteenth time) to make sure I haven't done anything more stupid than usual. Ran the engine through a couple tanks of fuel while running it around the yard this past Saturday and she was pretty good with the new, larger tires in the grass. She's actually just a bit tail-heavy - CG is about 3/8" behind the center of the spar at the root - but I don't think the effect is going to be anything more than being a bit more responsive to the elevator, and the only time that's an issue of any sort for me is right at lift-off. I'm ready for it if it happens so it's no problem.

Haven't had the camera out in DAYS for a pic of her finished - but she looks great to me. Will get pics here before lift-off.

Get that camera out, I am really curious about the graphics you chose. You probably have enough power up front to pull you through any attitude issues during takeoff just watch that landing approach in case the tail wants to settle on you as you slow down, that's where i usually get into trouble with a tail heavy bird.

Hello. I live in Brazil and own a twenty-year-old SIG Smith Miniplane. It was completely rebuilt after a terrible crash in 2001. Hopefully it will fly again this weekend. Can I join your Brotherhood?

Hey Leo! Absolutely! Always glad to see another SIG brother in the 'hood! Welcome to RCU and the SIG Brotherhood! You're our first declared member from Brazil too. Gotcha logged with #158.

Super08 is right, that's a REALLY nice looking plane - first class re-build. Good luck on your re-maiden.

And once again, here's the SIG Brotherhood, as I've got it today:

Thanks,

It will be a pleasure to exchange knowledge and experience with The Brotherhood.

The bipe is really nice. I am as proud of it as I am afraid of flying it again. It crashed then due to interference in my old FM frequency but this time it's a 2.4GHz. I'll document the maiden ans post some pictures.

Oh yeah, please DO!

Gotta tell ya, your building skills are WAY beyond mine - that's a truly good looking plane. Got a question though - I don't see the attachment points for the "N" struts. How have you hidden them?
