Where's the like button. I have an 11 YO daughter and 9 YO son, so I know exactly what you mean. I tried to get my daughter started by having her build an LT-20, but she got frustrated since there was measuring involved and they had not taught her how to use a ruler. She got one wing done and it has sat since then. Hoping she can give it another try, if not, I will let her brother do it instead, soon as he can grow tall enough to use the work bench, he is a runt.

The schools really do the kids a disservice now days. They don't teaching handwriting or spelling and it shows. In my day in Junior High I had an elective class in mechanical drawing I still use those skills in modelling, designing home improvement projects and I can read blueprints. In high school I took my first electronics class (Built my first R/C radio in it and got an "A".) and learned how to read schematics and the basic electronics formulas. I also had several wood shop classes, metal working (gas & electric welding, sheet metal work), and even some leather and plastics. Its amazing how much of the vocational type training I went on to use later in life.

Same here, had metal shop and electronics, drafting, and print shop. There was a wood shop, but I had wood working tools at home, so didn't partake in that. I have built some fancy and contemporary furniture from a 8' tall solid Walnut Armoire to an Oak corner entertainment center. The Armiore included carved ball and claw feet.

I would have love to have seen the Walnut Armoire! I was in an old oil man's mansion years ago built around 1930 it had the most beautiful library build floor to ceiling out of walnut. The whole house was a tribute told world craftsmanship. The owner had a house manager and she was rabid about preservation. She was kind enough to give me a tour since the family was out and about. I thought she was going to go postal on a telephone repairman when he wanted to swap out one of the old phones rather then repair it. I called into the office before I left just so I could try out one of the period phones.

If you like old houses check this one out and select "more info" on the tour to see more pictures. At one time Marland Oil ws the largest international oil company in the world during the late twenties. He gave his workers free health and dental care, and had a company cafeteria they could eat in for free at his headquarters and refinery in Ponca City.

I know how people don't like to sand. I am one who could almost pay top dollar to have someone else cover my plane. Now iam trying to teach my little girl how to. And oops forgot something dadwhich is ok I think we have all forgot to take the film off . Well thats it for now. Got the tail feathers done. Wing and fuss to come this week. I have heard stories of guys leaving the backing on and not catching it until the maiden flight when the covering suddenly ejects from the airplane! She caught it so she's above average! Way to go C-Crunch Jr!!! Keep showing Dad how its done. ;-)

Way back when the original GB Eagle first came out, but before I bought mine, another DCRC club member flew his first Monokote covered plane for the first time. It flew nice, but as the flight went on, pieces of the covering began to strip off and flutter down. Fortunately, enough of the critical surfaces held on to their cover long enough to get the plane down in one piece. Turns out none of the coverings backing had been removed. It was a lesson learned for me, and I always tested the covering with a hot iron to see which side the adhesive was on before sticking it down. However, sometimes I would cut a piece to cover a surface in reverse, and I had to recut to fit. I still like the OLD Monokote the best of the film coverings. They say the formula has not changed; maybe it is me. I now prefer the fabric coverings like Solartex.

Some of us just don't admit it.

Since I started using Ultraccoat, I found that all you have to do to know if the backing is on is lay it flat. If it curls its still attached.

One advantage Ultracoat/Oracoat does have over Monokote is the backing is more opaque. I still use both it depends on the look and color I want. Regardless I reuse the backing from both brands as plans covers etc.

The best plans protecting backing I found is on SIG coverings. Too bad they no longer sell it. I mentioned to Mike a few years ago that they should sell the backing itself in rolls as plans protector. He said they would but the supplier is no longer in business.

Well, I should be on the list as well..........I've built MANY SIG kits in my day. In fact, a SIG 4*40 was my very 1st ever kit build right about 20yrs. ago!
I'm currently building a MidStar .40 for my sons and I to fly together. I really do enjoy the simplicity of most SIG kits!!! It's nice to just really enjoy an easy going kit after much more difficult and timely builds!

OH! Yeah! An update for all y'all; after more than a year in the shop, the Stratus (SIG RC4) successfully took to the air once again yesterday. Got about 30 minutes flying time on her, total, during the afternoon. Fair amount of re-trimming necessary, but nothing catastrophic. She's not as spritely with the K&B .45 driving her instead of the old OS .61SF but she can still get it on pretty good.
