Since WBP is water borne, the underlying balsa should be sealed against the moisture in the WBP before using it to cover either with glass or Koverall or other fabric, to prevent warping the balsa.

I use a light coat of EZE-Kote first to seal the balsa. Its a very thick water based poly type specifically used for glassing.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/glue-and...500-ml-dlmbd37

Its not cheap, which is why I only use it for the seal coat, then switch to Minwax.

Here's the Corsair that I glassed using this method and then painted with latex house paint and then clear coated with automotive paint.

Looks nice. I was thinking about using sanding sealer because I have it.

I wonder about that. I am of the thought that the first coat of poly acts as a sealer and binding agent for the next coat of poly. I think if sanding sealer were used, the poly wouldn't stick to it as readily. Only to know is to try it. A great examples is to brush some poly over epoxy and see how it spreads away from the epoxy like water on a freshly waxed truck. Thats why I use the Eze-Kote first, its thicker, so less moisture to cause the wood to warp, but of the same properties as the Minwax, so it bonds. I noticed that Poly tends to interlink/crosslink much like lacquer does, each coat tends to bond with the former coat. Unless you disturb the finish of the prior coat, you wont see separation of coats in a cross section, you can't peel the top layer off the prior layer.

Epoxy is the same way provided each coat is applied prior to full cure of the prior coat, but apply it after the last coat has cured and you can get separation. Poly and Epoxy both tend to work this way, so they make a good choice for a smooth finish. Hardness is irrelevant for this application since it is so thin, so I don't consider strength to be an issue either.

Maybe I'll try Eze-Kote.

Captcrunch44 here is how to silk a plane article WITH A SPONGE.
I could'nt get it to load to this post. Send me your e mail address & you'll get the article
[email protected] frankie g the 88 year old modeler. It takes longer to read than to actually silk a plane wing.

Brethren, found this very interesting (and informative) site that may be of use to some of you. If not anything else it will bring tears to you eyes and make your Sig heart beat a bit faster... How many of these do you currently own or had?

I currently have: Yak-18P NIB kit, Morrisey Bravo (on my build table as we speak), 1/4 scale Spacewalker (built and flying) and my Ryan STA (hangar queen)!!!

I think the website owner is on this forum? Anyway it is a way back memory machine for sure, I found my first Sig kit the CL-3 Chipmunk 1967 Designed by: Jim Van Loo, Modified by Mike Stott. Mike Stott's SIG Banshee still seems to be a top seller after all these years I built and flew one around 1980.

Thanks for the link!

I'm glad people are still finding the site interesting - yeah, it's mine. Also, still looking (without much hope) for the RC-10 and RC-11 Simco, and any others that might pop up out of the blue. As far as I know, the only kits/ARFs missing are the RC-10 and RC-11, but some time back I DID manage to come across a very old set of free-flight SIG plans that nobody knew even existed (Auntie-Freez) - so there still might be others out there. BTW, the new RC-107EPARF EDGEtra is on-site already.

Also, before things get past me (easy to do these days) I want to wish all a Merry Christmas and a safe & Happy New Year.

Here's a 4Star 120 ... the 4-bladed prop is just for taking pictures. I would never fly with it.

That's a 4Star 60 on the floor.

So far I rteally like all the 4Stars I have owned but the 20 is my favorite. I have high hopes for the 120. My Irvine 120 should pull it around really well. It appears to have been built very well but never completed. It has MAP servos in the wing, I have never even seen that brand although I suspect they are Multiplex. I replaced them with good new Hitec servos, 645MG.

The 645MG work perfect for this beast, running them in mine too.

Guys, I would like to give SIG a big shout out for having the courage to bring out a new kit in a new size the Rascal 168" WS beauty! We need to recognize they actually got off the laurels and made a NEW kit! They didn't just talk about it they put skin in the game and made the investment (I'm sure it isn't cheap) to produce an all NEW kit from the ground up! There are a lot of companies out there, some larger some aren't, that don't have the faith in the hobby or us builders to step up and do what SIG did!

HATS OFF TO SIG!!!!
