The wallet can be our biggest Achilles heel at times. Right now mine is so empty even the moths died of starvation!

Ok, I am in the process of recovering my old Rascal 40 since the old covering wore out from fuel and sun. Besides a few other projects, I have a Sig Wonder kit, Sig Kavalier, and Sig Kobra. I plan on building them in that order, the Wonder and Kavalier I plan on building them stock with the exception of making the Kavalier a taildragger because of using a grass field. I do intend to modify the Kobra somewhat when the time comes to build it.

Does anybody have advice on how to tackle the plastic fuselage top on the Kobra? I plan on covering these planes with heatshrink covering, but I am not sure what is the best approach to finishing the plastic fuse top. I have entertained the thought of doing something different than using the fuse top and canopy and making a one-piece fuse top from nose to tail. Whadaythink?

Since the fuse top is vacuum formed plastic, heat will damage it. My thoughts are to use the plastic as a pattern and shape a piece of balsa to match the plastic. Hollow it out when done shaping and glue it on. The balsa will work with the iron on covering and will actually be stronger than the plastic in the long run. That's what I plan on doing to my Kobra and Astro Hog, when I get them and start building

That is what I was thinking of doing. I was even planning on including the canopy in the balsa block and eliminating the balsa sheeting that goes under the plastic molding to save a little weight.

By doing the whole fuse top in one piece, I have more flexibility shaping the fuse the way I like.

Well guys I finally got the 168 rascal. Picked it up today and make no mistake it is a big box and it does weigh in at 80 pounds. I new that i would have to make room to build but i neglected to make room for the box.
I hope to start building tonight or this weekend and will post pics of my build as i go. I know there are lots of pics out there already and i thank everyone that has posted there tips on the build it will make it a lot easier for me and captcrunch Jr. to build. This is going to be a ambitious project for the both of us. Can't wait to get started.
I also would like to give the staff at Sig a large THANK YOU for being so awesome to deal with. Thay are so nice when i go down and pic stuff up.

envious

Looks like my DA100 would have been a perfect fit after seeing the DA 120 on it. Just as well, I don't have the room for it anyway.

Did you drive to Montezuma, Iowa to pick up your Rascal 168?

I was born in CR, and lived there for 35 years. Ma Chandler's Hobby Shop was on 2nd Avenue. I spent a lot of my parents' money there. LOL

Maxey and Claude attended a contest, held at the old Hunter Airport, on US 30. I met them, and will never forget how nice they were to this 13 year old kid.

Yes i took captcrunch jr with me to pick up the rascal and the whole staff lights up with enthusiasm towards a new young flyer. I am to young to have met Maxcey and Claude Ihave only been able to say hi to Hazel Sig when I go down she is all was so busy talking to everybody. It's almost like she has a buch of 60 year old groupies, it so cool
that she has that kind of following.

Great looking CAPT Jr there, . . . a Moki twin Vt100 4-stroke gasser is listed in Classifieds. Believe it had Rascal 168 written all over it.

Man that box is huge! I had to officially decline the 168 today. Sad sad day when I can't afford a plane kit.

Sorry about that, but remember, this is not a cheapie kit. It is quite a huge commitment. Very few people can afford such a huge plane (me either), not just money, but space, transportation, time, etc....

if we can get it done befor Sig this year you can fly it. And believe me the price was almost out of reach for me too. If it wasn't for the selling of a few engines and a couple kits and a little OT. I would be in the same boat. Now I have the kit and now I need to figure out what engine to put in it and how to pay for it. There are a lot of choices out there, and prices from yeah I can get that to OMG. and yes I thought about that be for bought the kit. I do have a DLE 55 they would fly the plane but not like a DA 120. Bout a Saito would sound so sweet that it makes me sick but that falls into the OMG range.
So with that a side what are the opinions of our fellow flyers. What do you guys think would be the best bang for the buck for 40 lbs airplane?

It's too bad you didn't have a pair of FG-36 or I would trade you my DA-100 for that. Of course it would take a while for me to get it off the plane, it has been put away for the winter.
