I just finished recovering my 10 year old Rascal 40. New covering and different engine, now a Saito 56. I have used 3 other engines in the past on it: an old Irvine 40 Mk I, Magnum 52 4-stroke, and a Thunder Tiger 75 4-stroke. The Saito 56 should be a nice fit, I expect. My next project is a Sig Wonder with a Norvel 15. Next year I hope to build a Sig Kavalier and a Kobra. I plan to build the Kavalier all stock except maybe convert it to a taildragger since I fly off a grass field. I plan to kit bash the Kobra and not use the plastic fairing or the canopy and build it without landing gear.

Please excuse the messy work area, I plan to clean up before I start the Wonder build.

I saw this article on using Doculam and I see it takes paint well and its very reasonable!

The article on Doculam caught my eye as well. It's not clear but it looks like there is no shrinking quality to it. Does anybody know?

That was the question that popped into my mind as well. Over a sheeted wing, etc it would be great but you need a shrink factor if you are going over an open structure. I haven't seen any plastic film that didn't need a little tightening over the long haul.

I just started reading about Doculam too and there isn't much about it's properties other than it sticks good and requires low heat. Would be nice to have a material to cover larger planes cheaper than with the usual suspects.
And most of the links to suppliers aren't working.

You all know that Doculam is a laminating film for documents and such, right?

I use Neu Cover (aka Chinakote) from Hobby King or Value Hobby. Have used it on a few planes with good results. But i am not sure if it is big enough roll for the Rascal 168. It is very reasonably priced. See post #2226 for pictures of my Rascal 40 with the cheap covering. It goes on like Ultracote with only the seams requiring acetone to remove the white colored adhesive (unless it is transparent covering, then you don't have to do anything extra).

From what I read, If you order a large amount, it comes as one roll. SO if you order 30', its a 30 foot roll.

Well, there you go. When I saw the Rascal 168 at the Toledo Show last year, the wood was so beautiful, I thought if I ever get one, I would use transparent covering just to show the wood.

Ok i have purchased this material and it comes in a two 250' Roll's for $75 and it's 27 inches wide after applying it it does turn clear almost where you can't even see the film anymore. Then you clean with acetone and then Scotch-Brite it to rough up the surface and it holds paint pretty well I don't have any particulars other then what the article said. But if it works i will save $200 In covering the 168 rascal. Also I bought this from Amazon. ( don't knock the paint it is one of them things i just can't seem to learn. Any help Will be appreciated)

Does it shrink when you apply heat and if so how much?

Hey guys, not to barge in....
but I have an old SIG Doubler .15 kit, in good shape but no building plans. Anyone have a set I can get a copy of or direct me to a PDF? Thanks.

Yea, I have always assumed Monokote and the other coverings all started life for some other use, and then someone found out they could double the price and sell it to modeler's.

You know, that stuff would be good for laminating the plans too. Keep them clean and wrinkle free.

Have you tried Sig? They sell all the old plans, manuals, and even decal sheets.

Y'er never barging in - all are welcome here - - ALWAYS!

HSUKARIA is probably right - SIG might have the plans available still. In the meantime, I've got a jpg of what they look like at https://wanderings-ds.jimdo.com/sig-rc-kits-1-20/. Not usable for building but you might get some hints until a pdf comes along.

Funny when I asked if they had plans for the Liberty Sport to sell they said no.

Yeah, they told me the same thing about my Stratus. They DO have some plans, just seems to be a case of "not very many of them".

Can't hurt to ask though.

I bought a roll of this stuff 5 years ago, used it once to cover DollarTree Foamboard, the heat to laminate it was enough to delaminate the paper from the foamboard. I did hear it was good for putting under silk or silkspan to use less dope, but I haven't tried that yet.

I had a Doubler ll, this is the original Doubler, apparently smaller and less "pylon" looking. SIG doesn't have the plans but there is enough view on that page I can manage, the formers are two pieces, what I needed to know.

OK, now I'm really interested. Let us know your final thoughts as you work more with it compared to the traditional stuff. Things like weight (heavier lighter), shrinking on compound curves (wing tips), edges sealing, etc. I may just have to take a leap of faith and get some of this stuff but I would like to know more before I make that decision.

I am curious also. Are we talking about the 1.5 mil or the 3 mil? Thanks

yest the front end builds just like my dynaflite super decathlon. i saw your words you just offset the engine a little to compensate for the 2 degrees & 5 degrees down thrust.
but i am having trouble with the 2 degrees right thrust. how much is a little? as you said.
i have used the dynaflite manual instructions & the engine came way off from coming out the cowl center.
i must admit i am confused.
one modeler said hang by landing gear and slide the engine around till it fits. but with the DLE45ra if i had the plane built that far i could not reach the bolts to install the engine. my work bench is not that tall to do that anyhow.
i am looking for some of the offset centerline dimensions compared to the fuse firewall centerline. well i'll keep hacking at it. it shouldn't be that hard but right now i am confused.
thanks for your help frankie trainermaster 80
