I like saito engines. I have a .72 and .91 and they both run real good. My 5 cyl is a saito and it runs good although I have not used it on a plane.

Hey Steve,
My kit arrived today in good shape. I've been looking at some 5 cly engines still not sure if I'll go that way or build the 19 model and use a G38 for power. If I go with a 5 cyl what size would you recommend.
I've been thinking about this one on RCU just not sure it's big enough or to big.

Good to hear you got your kit in good condition. The 19 is nice I'm only doing the 23 because I had the engine and wanted to build a plane without a cowl so the engine could be exposed. That is the same engine I have so it should work good. You could save lots of money building the pt-19.

I feel that he is asking a reasonable price, but get some pics before you make a decision.

What size is e PT-19?

The FA-325R5 Will have a bit less power than an FA-300T. It will handle up to about 20# nicely.

The wing is 89" and weight 11.5 to 14 lb. The engine requirements are 2-stroke 1.08 to 1.5 or 4-stroke 1.20 to 1.60 (19.5 to 26cc).

Sounds like. Dynaflite PT-19.

I had one W/Lot of added scale details. Full sheeting on the wings, wing fillets built up W/micro balloons, Robart oleo struts, cowl filled W/micro balloons in the front for 3d inlet openings, etc.

It weighed 16# & an FA-150 converted to CDI burning 15% Cool Power had just about the right power. It would pull through BIG loops W/ease.

The FA-325R5 should mark for impressive vertical performance. Watch the weight up front as the FA-150 balanced pretty well W/O nose ballast. The PT-23 does have a shorter nose moment I think so you should probably be OK if you watch the nose weight & mount your batteries towards the rear.

That 5-cylinder radial would be an excellent candidate for one of CH Ignitions' new radial CDI systems. I think Adrian has already doneone so he would have all of the hardware in stock.

Dan any updates on your build?

I should be back on my pt23 build soon. I have a few things to finish on some other planes. I'm putting an onboard glow on my saito 90T that's on a cub and I'm building an Eflite Super Cub. The Eflite Super Cub is a really nice plane by the way.

I am trying to balance my Dynaflite PT 19 after replacing the OS FS 120 with a Zenoah G-23. The plans do not specify the cg location. Rule of thumb is about a third back from the leading edge, but I am a bit leery. Does anyone know the recommended range for the cg?

According to the build manual, the CG is 4 3/8 aft of the leading edge.

Update on the PT-23. It's starting to look like a plane. I have the wing ready to join the two hafts. After that's done the ailerons need to be built then I can attach the wing to the fuse.

Cliff,
Thanks for the pictures. I've been volunteering two days a week at MAAM now that I'm laid off. We're working on the P-61 wing.

Nice! I have always thought about doing the same. I used to be a crew chief on Huey's back in the day.

I have the two wing hafts glued together. Now I can see how big the wing is and I'm glad I made it in three sections.

I have a question for you guys. The plans say to sheath the center section with one piece of wood from W3 to W3. I was thinking about going one more bay to W4 that way the entire center section will be sheath. Do you think this will help strengthen the center section or would I be adding unnecessary weight? Also should I sheath the center of the wing panels from W4 to W6 to add strength where the support tube is?

Sheeting the entire center section is fine, but not necessary. There's no need to sheet as far out as the end of the wing tube.

Looks like I'm not going to use the 325r5 on this plane due to moving to a different flying field. So I'm switching to a pt19 and using my Saito 150. I'll have to add the 3 inches back to the front of the fuse but that's the only change I have to make. So that's it for this thread.

That is a bummer! I just found your thread tonight and I'm planning on putting a OS 300 5cyl radial on my framed up PT-19. I have not modified the nose yet. I have at least 1 model ahead of it before I get on it.

Steve, I don't think your engine will be too big for our field. It should fly just fine and be very scale like. Don't give up now.

Thanks for the incoragement Cliff. My concern is the speed the plane will be flying at with this engine. It's not a high speed plane. Maybe I just need to get the right prop for it.

I had a Saito F-150 with CDI burning 15% Cool Power. It was perfect power wise, Pulled my somewhat heavy due to added detail PT-19 through HUGE loops. Put an 18 X 6 on it so it will slow down for landings. It is a pretty sleek airframe & doesn't slow down quickly. Flaps might be a worthwhile option.

Just think how sweet it will sound and look on a nice warm spring day against a deep blue sky... sighhhh I am sitting here listening to the sound of sleet and freezing rain pound against the window of my shop and thinking about what it will be like to go flying again Don't give up too soon, I agree with the right prop and flaps it will be just fine.

The weather does su**. I'm not sure how I can add flaps due to how the wing is cut up. Could posible add them just to the center section. I'll have to look into it.

There is a flaps mod for the Dyna Flite PT-19.

I'll see if I can find it.
