Kevin I almost did that on mine (the cowl fit flush thing) Which looks very nice on yours. I just burned out and said the heck with it and in the end wish I had. Vincent did that on his last build, it really makes a nice clean line. My next plane the cowl will look like an after thought but that's the way it is on the Super Cub and a host of others, "oh well". I want it to look like a real one so no fancy fit up there.

Do you have a guesstimated finish time for yours, I know you work and that really slows things down.

Oh man Leroy, I wish I had a guess as to when. I'm not sure where I will stop. I'm thinking of the rivet thing and the pinking thing.
Still have cloths to make for miss Betty(although that will probably be last.)

I have been off the last 6 weeks healing up from drilling myself. That has allowed me to put about 3 hours a day on the SW when I could.
I finally go back to work Monday. So the build will really slow down now .

Kevin I have been down that work and build road and it's a long road especially when you build like you and some others of us. Building takes time and so often there isn't much left in a day after the work and family obligations are fulfilled. You have taken on a large plane and have done a lot to it to build something special and it surely will be. Glad that your hand is healing well, you don't need to be doing any more of that, lesson learned.

Many of us will hang with you to the end, who would not want to see the end of this one.

Take care,
Leroy

LOL! I'm sure several of us has, my biggest problem was going to my room only to find the wife coming in (what seemed like only minutes) and saying it was time to go to work.
Ahhh, the good ole days. lol. Don't miss them one bit!!! Love early retirement!!!!

Yes, Joe. I wish I was early retired. A guy could get used to that

Leroy, Yep. Like you said, work all day then want to build in the evening don't happen much. 20 years ago I could work all day (overtime too) then come home and work on the house or car till bedtime. One year I was renovating the house and that was the routine for much of the year. No big woop. Now I am good till I sit down. If I sit down I'm done for the day.
SO glad you will be here at the end.

Robert, The Life Of Riley you have. Enjoy my friend. I had a little taste this past month. I probably have anther 13 to grind away.

Well, spent the day (my last day ) working on the cockpit. If you remember I filled all the gaps to make a perfect fit. Today I opened that back up to make space for paint. Sand, check sand, check, sand, check. Two hours later I have what I think is sufficient for paint on the jambs. The cockpit is about a heavy 1/64 low and a heavy 1/32 front to back.

After the cockpit was fit. I made a cockpit release. The cockpit will be held in place with magnets. The release breaks the bond with the magnets then she lifts right out. I embedded 2 magnets in the subfloor. This holds it, but not as tight as I would like. I will eventfully add a couple more magnets. Don't want to be inverted and watch Betty drop to her death

Finally beginning to look like a Space Walker

Pretty nice Kevin! I like the idea.. (don't think Betty minded!) I've been away for a few days and am just catching up on my thread reading...I noticed that on post #523 specifically the last photo that shows your DLE mounted, it may just be the camaera angle but...measure the distance between the back of the carb and the front of the firewall. It looks close, if you don't have at least 3/8" distance you may want to consider opening the firewall up roughly the size of the carb for better air flow into the carb.

P.S. Should Betty be flying this plane in flip flops? LOL

Thank you Robert

Welcome back Vincent. I sure hope you are pondering your next build
I checked the space between carb and firewall. It is 1/2 inch. I looked at the pic in post 528, and your right. It looks like a kiss.
Thanks so much for looking out for me.

She is a southern bell with an edge.

Bell part - She couldn't admire her pedicure (nor could you) any other way.
Edge part- Betty quote " YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I CAN DO IN FLIP FLOPS, BUSTER." LOL

See what happens when you go back to work, all work and no play moves you out of the lime light, thought I'd kick you back up front where you belong. Hope you can find time to get more done, your plane like a dog needs attention. Ha, ha, I tried.

I know I'm in the same boat, but things at the Gardner workshop have been pretty quiet as well! Glad building season is almost here, I miss our "virtual" build times together...

BTW: I finished and maidened my 73"AJ Laser last week, it is by far the best 30 cc palne I have flown to date!

O'tay, I will post some pics for you all to see later, tonight I will be flying after work! Kevin, my club has a January winter event called Frozen Fingers, and we always raffle off a plane each year. This year I was asked if I could put together the raffle plane, of course I said yes. It's an ARF but you guys know me by now that I can't leave well enough alone, so I have been modifying it a bit. It's only a 40 sized plane, but I managed to stuff an OS-GT15 gas motor in it. Should be tons of fun to fly... anyway, that's what's been on my workbench.

So Vince, did you do any mods to this one ?
And how are the 3D skills coming along ?
Are you sold on the DA engines, worth the extra change ?
Is this plane an easy flyer for one with modest flying skills (me) ?
I like the shot with the airliner in the background .
Slick looking plane. Thanks for posting.

Kevin

Well look at what Vincent has been up to, sweet guy no less, way to go, plane looks great and someone is going to enjoy it.

Vince you mentioned my quiet shop, well it hasn't been not busy, it's an SUV I've been spending time on and it's out of there now. I have been figuring things out and redrawing and making a couple of formers for some 6 strip laminations on the tail parts. "Yeah", I finally got the table saw out where I can use it. I want to get a few thing started before I start the thread. The J3 kit will make a nice plane but it's something else to build it into a scale super cub, plenty to think about on this one.

Kevin, what's amazing about this Laser is how easy it is to fly and land, when you want to bring on the 3D flying it also does not dissapoint! I highly recommend it! There was no need to modify much on this plane it was that good. I upgraded a few hardware pieces but that's about it... As far as the DA, well let's just say that when you get your first DA you will look at you other engines differently...They are the BEST!!!!

Leroy, I am a creature of habbit and one of the things that gives me great pleasure is to visit each one of you every night through threads. I look forward to "visiting" with you on your next build! I love to see how others do things and I have learned so much from others...

I will have to give that Laser a look.
If i am going to move up to the next level.
Let it be an arf. Not one I slaved over.
