Jerry Bates Falco F.8L 1/4 scale
Hi All, Let me preface a bit.
I'm new to the RC world, but I have a good friend that has given me the bug. First, I'm starting using Real flight 6.5, using a Flyzone Millenium Master. When I master the plane on the simulator then I'll give the real thing a try. So far, I practice about an hour a day and have had some runway landings and a lot of crashes, but I'm overcorrecting less often. Realistically, I figure 6 months to get to where I can fly the real thing, (Flyzone), on a good calm day. Then a lot to learn from there. I have excellent modeling skills, an A&P license, and repair electronics for a living.
I have the Jerry Bates version of the Falco that I'm going to work up to. I think 2 years before I can have the rest of the parts and the flying experience to start the construction. I have the kitcutters full wood kit and the cowl already. I'm trying to figure out engine / prop combos so I can start saving for, and buying, the necessary parts not included in the kit. I've seen gas engine recommendations from 1.60 to 3.05 ci, depending on who built the Falco and wingspan from 78'' to 84''. I'd like to size the engine and prop for some areobatic, but not 3D. Can you give me any ideas on this? I've been looking at the YS175CDI engine as a possibility. I'm just confused as to the wide difference in what people are saying as far as engine sizing.
I'm also thinking about electric but, I don't know what size motor, ESC and battery it would take. The weight of the combination plus a flight time similar to gas might make the plane a slug. If you don't mind me asking how much total did you have into the plane when finished? Any help you can give as far as the total project goes and parts sourcing would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig Graham
