Jay, when I was in Germany, the Stick 40 with a K&B 40, was the primary trainer for our club. Using the Futaba radio with the buddy cord allowed me to bring new guys into the club. I helped them build the planes and trained them to fly. I must have trained 10 or 15 guys over the 4 years I was there. I could get them flying quickly for a very little investment. The 3 channel stick was a great flying plane.

Good morning Rich,
Back when BUSA first came out with the swizzle sticks (before they changed to the new stick 40) myself and another guy use to take parts from a crashed plane, buy some pine corners from the hardware store and some lite ply and build our own version of the swizzle stick. They flew very well and was a cheaper way to get back flying. Most of the time they would be more durable as well.

My first scratch built RC was a Swizzle Stick clone using pine sticks and lite ply, like you did. I made a wing from folded over piece of foam board (this was before corrugated plastic board ala SPAD). I made the tail feathers of the foam board also. I painted it with brushed on Rustoleum. It flew great until I retired it for larger engine planes after quite a few flights. BTW, 30 x 40 inch sheets of foam board cost only a dollar each at Dollar tree.

Thanks for the info spaceworm. The only planes I've built over the years that used foam was, Sig Klipper, Sig Komander, and an Ace T-34.

Jay I've got a RCGF 60 cc in my Corsair a lot of power there. I don't know much about the RCGF 20 cc. But if it has the same type of HP as the 60 does

Thank you John. I'm sure the RCGF 20 twin has enough power to fly my 1/4 scale Cub. I was wondering how reliable it is and ease of use? The price is more in my budget but sometimes cheap price means junk. How do you like your 60?

Jay the 60 is a power house. you know when you stand in front of the stab to hold the plane while reving it up and it get's you in the lower legs.

Jay, Over the years I have built a four BUSA 1/4 scale Cub, sold a couple and crashed 1. In all of them were powered by a Zenoah 38. I do build heavy but the 38 is just about right for this size of airplane. I have used the Cubs to tow a Banner, a camera platform and to tow up Gliders. I say all this because I don't the RCGF 20 Twin will have the power to fly this size of airplane. I could be wrong, just my .02 cents.

Both of mine were powered by a DLE-20 and even at 17 lbs I flew most of the flights, including take-off, at half throttle and it flew well enough to get me 3rd place at several Scale Masters contests. 20cc is perfect for these Cubs.

Hi Rich, thanks for the .02 cents worth. I've not built anything bigger than a 60 size ugly stik. I'm always looking for information on the bigger birds so I can get going on one. I do tend to build my planes pretty light. I did have a couple of guys in Florida that I built a plane for them for that reason. Since I have not built a big bird I was going by the manufacturer recommended size. That's why I thought a 20cc twin would be prefect for this.

Thank you for your input. Wow, 3rd place at the Scale Masters. I don't think I could ever be good enough to even go to the masters let alone place at one. Build update,
We're getting there. The tail is just sitting in place, still have more to do before I attach it. Need to mount the motor as well and put the tank together. Sand it all down, then I'm going to monokote the tail and paint the rest. Still need to install my radio system and get it balanced after painting. I'm hoping she flies well right off the table. I'll keep you posted on progress.

i picked up a cub from a club member a few days ago and info from another group seem to agree its a Balsa USA design.
Have to say the 3/8" dowels at the root rib look a little weak to me but they all say it flies fine.
WS measured at 110". had a new DLE30 in it. he bought it for the engine and i have the rest now.
Does this look right?

A lot of you guys build some really nice airplanes. My question is this, have any of you on this forum used a cowling from fiberglass specialty? I have always heard good things about their products. But on another forum I'm on, someone said they bought a cowl for the same kit I have and he says the cowl doesn't fit. What do you guys think? Any opinions?

I have bought wheel pants from them without any problems. Beare one thing in mind you will still have to sand and fill the cowling. You get it just the way it comes out of the mold. That is why he warns you before you gain entrance to the catalog. The cowling is sized just like a factory cowling but builds do vary and the fit is affected by how well you do your job in building the fuselage.

I know fiberglass can have small pin holes in them no matter how well you do it. While I was in the Navy, we would put on a finishing resin to fill the holes and sand it smooth. Do you do this or do you have another method? What do you recommend?
