Hey folks, I am seeing that boys at Balsa USA have released their Camel. Sells for $289. Looks like might need to visit the Balsa USA trailer at Rhinebeck this year! Here's the link.

I always love to see a new kit come out, but the Camel does look a lot like the Pup, I know there are big differences between the two, however I think a 1/4 albi would have sold so much better.
A 1/6 D7 would be great too. I have the 1/4 D7 in the box still, but if I build it I simply wont have anywhere to put it. I need to crash something

JWRICH,

Good luck with your Spad. Personally, I would rethink the G38. This plane is awesome, but has serious issues on take off. You need an engine that you can "Spool Up" quickly when the plane leaves the ground prematurely (which it will). I have the DLE 35 in mine which is the perfect engine for the plane. Instant power fits perfectly. If you use the G38 I would definitely tune it on a test stand. Make sure you get at least 7,000 RPM. I had a new G38 in mine originally and the engine was not enough to pull it out of takeoff trouble.

Good Luck, the plane is impressive.

Ray.

Thanks Ray, The 38 I have has been around awhile, it is a good strong running engine. I also have a new DLE 35Ra and the firewall is drilled for the one that pulls the best. Thanks for checking in, I would like to finish the Spad quickly.

Mark

I would love to be in the Balsa USA Brotherhood. I am currently their newest Team Pilot, Builder and Designer. I get the luxury of working with Mark and Dave on a daily basis. I wnt to thank all of the loyal customers that we have out there. I would consider it an honor to be accepted in!!!

This is a picture of me with my blue yellow and black Stingray 120, and a good buddy of mine with his red white and blue Stingray 120. We just revamped the kit adding some modern touches and it will be rereleased in the next week or two!!!

Please allow me in.

Along with the Stingray I just finished with Chad, I've also built and flown the BUSA Eindecker revamped as an E.VI.

And a 1/4 scale L-4.

I flew a 1/4 scale Fokker D.VII for a season (built by another modeller)

I'm now currently finishing a new 1/4 scale L-4 and a Stick 40 plus converted to electric.

I have been currently touring around with the 1/4 scale SPAD. We fly ours on a DLE 30 spinning a 20X8 Scimitar prop. As for the premature flight we do not have that problem with ours and I personally have not heard of this issue until now. Feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss this issue with yours.

Does anyone know if Balsa USA will be releasing another 1/6 scale warbird this year?
I have two Williams Bros Spandau machine guns sitting on the bench looking for a good home.

Great thread idea - any Dawn Patrol event I've attended is always very well represented by Balsa U.S.A. models, and almost all look and fly great!!

Add me to the list - currently flying a 1/4 scale BUSA Sopwith Pup - slowly changing it around to represent a Model 9901a Shipboard Pup (need to add the Lewis Gun firing through the upper wing):

Buncha half-finished projects as well, including a far-too long neglected 1/3 Scale Pup (half framed up - stopped when I moved back to Wisconsin from Michigan a few years ago) - hopefully my primary project (again) this winter.

Best regards,

Lee McDuffee

I think a DLE 30 has a lot more "giddy up" than a G-38. I'm using an old US 41 in my SPAD. This summer I had a major takeoff glitch due to not getting the power in fast enough. Basically, the plane snap rolled as soon as the wheels lifted off the runway. Due to luck and not skill the plane survived without a scratch.

Charlie, I am not sure the DLE 30 has more pulling power than the Zenoah 38. I have a DLE 30 on a GP Stearman ARF with a 19x8 prop, it is very fast. As you know I have the 38 on the Fokker D-VII (24 Lbs.) with a Master Airscrew 20x8 and it flys at a little more than half power. I am powering my Spad XIII with the Zenoah 38, I think it will have more than enough power. I have not been a fan of the US/Qudra engines, had a couple, found them lacking.

See you next month

Rad fords,

Feel your pain. I was not as fortunate as you however. My Spad hit hard after "stalling around" and required a massive rebuild. I've talked with more than a few Spad owners and they seem to have the same problems on takeoff. I've found that an engine that responds quickly is the answer. I have the DLE 35 which fits perfect and provides that instant power to get you out of trouble on takeoff. The plane is really awesome and is impressive in the air. Good luck with yours.

Ray.

Ray, I originally plan to put a DLE 35 ( I still can if needed) but I decided to go with the Zenoah 38. I would interested in see your engine set up in your Spad. Could you post pictures of your installation, I would help me greatly.
Thanks

Don't hold your breath, I wish they would though.
As they still use die cutting setting up a new size would be a fair size outlay.

Chadasmus, how about a 1/6 DVII ?
