My problem was flying from a smooth runway and trying to "nurse" the plane into a straight takeoff. By the time I had put in enough rudder to correct the swerve I was sitting pretty for a snap roll as soon as the plane started flying. The answer seems to be to get the plane up to flying speed as quickly as possible with as little rudder input as you can get away with. I've never had a problem flying from grass.

I think "everybody" who has been in the hobby a long time has built a Phaeton 40 and a Stick 40. BUSA has produced lots of other beautiful good flyers. Phaeton 90, Taube 40, Stingray 120, Laker, just to name a few that I have been privileged to own. Not too difficult to build and they look like a million dollars.

I have built and campaigned (flown) a Swizzle Stick (three channel), powered by an ST .35 R/C engine and a Phaeton biplane (their original Phaeton design), powered by a Super Tigre .40K S series, Bluehead engine, both built and flown back in 1982. Loved both of those planes.

Everybody wants something different from BALSA USA, some a 1/6 scale, some another 1/3 scale.

I want a 1/4 scale version of their 1/3 Albatross... And I know a lot of guys that think the same way:-) Should we start a Balsa USA - writing campaign? I take any version of the Albatross as long as it is 1/4 scale!

i'm not very tech savy....I hope these pictures come out. You can see the second firewall that I installed because the original was set for the G38. You have to shave the bottom cross member to get the clearance for the head. The only thing that is exposed is the two exhaust pipes. Let me know if you need any other info.

Thanks Ray, That is basically how I had my 35 set up. I still can install the 35 if the Zenoah 38 does not work out. I changed to the 38 because I won a Balsa USA 1/4 kit of my choice and I pick the Fokker Dr-1 Tri-plane. I plan to put the 35 on the Dr 1. I have left my options open. Since you have flown the DLE 35, do you think it will be too much for the Dr-1? The tri-plane kit recommends the Zenoah 26, the 38 may be a better choice. I have engines to do all of the above. I would like to know your thoughts on these 2 engines for the SPAD XIII

Also, I would love to see a 1/4 scale Albatross kit on the market soon, I think it would be a great seller for Balsa USA.

That's too much. I have a BUSA DR 1 ready to go this winter also. The plan is to use a GTM cowl that I purchased and shorten the nose and the tail to make it look more scale. The DLE 35 most likely will be fine, I run a 20 X 8 prop on mine. I just purchased an AGM 30 which I plan on using. I ran the engine on a test stand and it runs well and starts easy. The engine is a dead ringer to the DLE and parts are interchangeable between the two. Good luck with your build, keep me posted.

Thanks for the quick reply, Ray. I will try the g-38 first and mount the 35 if needed. May buy a DLE 30 for the Dr-1. We are off to Denver tomorrow to visit my daughters family and new grandson.

After talking to the Balsa USA guys at a few of the gatherings this year, I would not be surprised to see a 1/4 scale Albi in the future. Now I am NOT, repeat NOT, tying to start anything in the way of misinformation about what Balsa USA is up to, but they are aware that we need a 1/4 scale Albi. I would also like to go on record as saying I would buy one.

Yeah I think a 1/4 Albi would sell well, probably much better than the 1/3, so many people just don't have the room, or vehicles for 1/3.

I'm sure BUSA make models based around the USA market as the overseas market would be pretty small to them.
So considering that, do many of you guys in the USA like building 1/6th models anymore?
I would love to see the Albi and DVII in 1/6th also. If they switch to laser this would be a lot easier.

I was told that the laser will not happen as it takes longer to produce a lot of kits. It may take more time on the front end, they can stamp out sheets a lot cheaper after the dies are made. I have never had bad die cutting from BUSA.
!/4 scale seems to be the most popular, but I was told they had a German plane in 1/6th scale in the works. Most likely a triplane. I would like to see a DVII as well.

I do like the 1/6th scale size, but in that size they design them with extra wide gear that really ruins the look for me. Yes, I can bend my own gear, but I don't like to...that's the reason for a kit instead of a scratch build. I'm sure they do it to reduce ground looping, which is a genuine problem, but then they lose the WWI look. I think a gyro on rudder is a better solution. Gluing the wheels to the axle and having the whole axle and wheels turn together might work too.

Well, you can always just re-bend the provided gear. Not a big deal really. We all have our thing that drives us crazy on the scale looks. I hate the long cowl on the triplane. I have gone to a great amount of effort to box my engines back to have a scale sized cowl. For some reason, I do not notice the landing gear.

I would love to see a 1/6th SE5a. I just don't have the room for the bigger stuff right now. Having said that, I'm surprised they haven't taken advantage of the popularity of the DLE-20 sized engines. It would have to be an odd scale like 1/5 or something but most of my engines are in this range. I have like 5 Zenoah 20's alone and only 2 are spoken for.

I agree that 1/5th scale is sadly missing. My 1/5 Thomas-Morse fits one piece in an old RAV4. It's the biggest size that will fit that way in small SUVs and vans.

True enough that different scale deviations bug different people. I actually don't mind stabs being a little large, but landing gear and cowls really matter to me. BUSA can't please everyone, and they certainly fill a niche.

I have no complaints with BUSA. Any items that I want to change, easily can be. I think they got it right by making them function well stock.

I had what I think was called the Parasol back in the 80s. ?? Flew it for years and retired it. Loved my big fat Bristol I built in the early 90s. Just finished a Taube 40 and it is waiting on first flight. I run 4 strokes in them.
