It wasn't quite as dark as the camera shows, but at previous events, pilot have flown well before dawn. The honor of first flight is well contested.

Welcome to RCU Riecilla.

BUSA numbers aren't handed out willy nilly, we'll need to find out a bit more from you and see some pics of your planes.

I think I have finally decided which Balsa USA model to build this winter.
I'm going to start with the 1/6 scale Sopwith Pup. Then hopefully do a 1/4 scale next.
Still not 100% decided. The Nieuport 17 looks really good too

For an engine I have a few choices. I have either a Saito FA-56, Saito FA-72, or a Saito FA-80.
The Saito FA-56 looks like a popular choice. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how this plane will balance with the Saito FA-56? Will it be tail heavy requiring nose weight?

Has anyone tried a Saito 72 or Saito 80 in the 1/6 scale Balsa USA planes? If so how did it work out balance and power wise?
I prefer to use the Saito 72 or 80 over the 56. But I don't want to add any tail weight, or any extra weight at all.

hey guy's, don't know that it warrants a number or me becoming one of your brotherhood , but I'm excited about my first scale model. I picked up yesterday a kit at a swapmeet in orlando. it's a busa citabria pro. YEAH!!!.. I've assembled a half dozen or so ARFS and loved all of them. this is my third real kit, first was a great planes electro streak , then a gp .60 size j3 that I built as a clipped wing version supercub. but now I'm excited! the wood in this kit is nothing short of fantastic. Sorry I have no pics to share, but photography isn;t my hobby . model aviation is. hope y'all don't mind if I buzz in now and then for some advice. thanks. and , by the way , I would love to sign up

Hey Danpos,
I don't have the 1/6 pup, mine is 1/4. It has a 36cc gasser and still needed nose weight. most of these designs do.
I'd lean toward a bigger engine and keep the tail light during the build. Hopefully someone with a 1/6 can chime in.

Rcjunky67, you know the deal, if you don't frequent the kit area we have no idea who you are. 1 simple pic is all that's required.
We would love to see a build thread.

Hey guys, just got back from Rhinebeck. Flew my SE 5a for three flights, great day. I usually like to go on Saturday, but due to the weather I decided to go on the Sunday instead. Gee, those 1/4 scale planes look small next to those 1/3 scale bullies and there were plenty of them! BUSA was there, I tried to corner Dave to ask about the future products (maybe the 1/4 scale Albatross)?

ok Mark, I'll see what I can do.I've sold my cub and destroyed the electro streak, pulled an inside loop and went to snap at the top and snapped the wing in two, wasn't enough left to rebuild so I got out the plans board and am in the process of building another with some bracing mods for the wing ,including a cf wing tube. Its about 90% done, main structures are done, just have to install servos and cr's and make a hatch ,then final sand everything , then covering.I'll see if I can upload a pick of that and some other things. thanks

You can add me to the BUSA Brotherhood, I used to have the 80" Eindecker. However when at Rhinebeck this past weekend, I bought the new 1/4 scale Sopwith Camel for my winter build. It's gonna be fun!

If anybody was wanting the rare TEMPO II kit there is one up on Ebay. Contact the guy first though. He is a modeler and if you tell him you heard about it here or on RCGroups he might give you a better price.

Hey Riecilla, That Parasol was called the "Tempo II". I flew the bejesus out of mine too back in the 80's. I even took it to college with me and ended up scratch building a new fuse on the dorm room coffee table.

By the way, Take a pic of your Taube and post it. And... welcome to RCUniverse!

Danpos, I haven't done a 1/6th scale BUSA kit, but I have a 1/6th scale VK Nieuport. I fly that with a PAW 40 diesel that turns a 13x6 prop at about 7200 rpm, which is a lot less power than a 56 FS. Plane weight 5 lbs 6 oz ready to fly. Rx batteries are mounted in a box in the front of the firewall and servos are up against the back of the firewall. Engine weighs 14 oz. I needed NO nose weight, and power was PLENTY.

I would try to find ways to keep the tail as light as possible, locate the equipment as far forward as possible, and use a 56 or even a 40, not a 72. With too much power these planes look ridiculous in flight. I know what a throttle is for. But it's hard not to use the power when it is there, and a little movement on the throttle stick gives a big boost when you have a big engine. It doesn't look good and it can cause problems. I'd really try to avoid it. It should be a really fun plane on a 56. Think LIGHT. If despite your best efforts it needs nose weight, a heavy hub is the efficient way to do it.

Jim

Hooray !!!... I don't know so much about a nice work shop,I've been skating on really getting it organized and just can never seem to find enough time in my day. It's starting to shape up. Beats the hell outta using half of a 10x20 metal shed that I had at our old place. The deal is she gets the barn and field(2+acres) for her horses and I get the 2 car garage.and the field, which has no tree's, save for one little oak and is flanked on three sides by open pasture land, with no tree's,on the weekends for flying. yup, pretty sweet. just gotta clear out the horse nuggets from the runway and we're good to go.
We've been here for just about a year and a half and the work never ends, but it's coming along.

Any way, thanks for the #, and I'm glad to be a part of this group of fine upstanding gent's.

By the way, I've not seen much from quagmire,do ya think he'd be willing to, if it's ok with you of course Mark, switch #'s with me? for obvious reasons, ya know? rcjunky67 out

I think that's a little unfair to Quagmire,he was here first and shouldn't have his number taken off him, you could always change your name to rcjunky81.

I have three BUSA kits 1/4 scale SE5A and 2-1/3 Scale Pups.

I'd like a number.

Here are couple of pictures of the Pup fuse. I'm going off plans and building it more scale like.

Sorry mate, forgot to put list above edited. I normally edit the list if it's already on the page so the thread isn't full of lists. No 82 for you.

Point taken Mark, yeah that wasn't to cool of me... My apologies. Didn't mean for it to come across that way , and I wasn't thinking of it as who joined the brotherhood first. As far as changing my handle, well, let's just say that ain't happening. I was dubbed "rcjunky" by my one and only little girl, and she get's a big kick outta seeing her daddy use that as his handle on these threads, and any where else that I use it.

chock it up as good natured enthusiasm. "Quagmire" you have my apologies, no harm was intended. Junky out

I'm thinking about building the BUSA 1/4 scale D7. What engine do you guys recommend? I was thinking saito 1.8 or g-38.

DLE 55. Better prop size for this plane.
