I think that one was called Flesh Gordon if I remember correctly.

I built a few of those Sterling kits way back when. I was happy to have the airplane but hated dealing with the poorly crafted parts. I think that's what started me down the path of scratch building. The BUSA kits are very nice, I just wish they were more true to scale.

Here is the latest picture of the cockpit of my 1/3 scale Pup. I'm redoing the instrument panel so The second picture is of the new bezels I'm turning out of aluminum.

Here is a link to the thread I created to record the project: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-s...pwith-pup.html

I feel that the practical designs are perfect for BUSA. They are sort of a blank canvas, scale wise. You can build them stock, or go as far as you want to, with modifications. This makes them very marketable designs, with the pilot friendly aspects built in. Anyone getting serious enough to pursue more scale aspects, should have no problem adding them to the BUSA designs. Even if you want a more scale rib section, you can replace those as well. I think if these planes were exact scale, the sales would not be there, and the kits would go away. Just like the other scale ww1 kits that were available.

Great work there Andy. I really like those bezels.

As for that FG movie, I really like that Queen soundtrack as well. That movie was perfectly odd and cheesey. Very original. My tag line seemed appropriate to our time. Ming in Washington! lol

That is true, I never thought of it like that but it would be cool if BUSA offered a scale version at higher cost. That way it would be the best of both worlds. I'm seriously considering recutting the wing ribs to the scale airfoil/ Right now the 3rd scale ribs are about half the height of the full size ribs but I'm still debating.

Thanks VG, I've had a lot of fun customizing my Pup and I'm learning as I go with my lathe. The bezels were fun and I'm glad they came out as well as they did for a first attempt. At some point, as Roy Scheider said, "I'm gonna need a bigger boat (lathe)."

Listen you "******"... I didn't send you a PM, I left you a visitors message... you are not a moderator or an admin, so don't act like one... you don't like someone pointing out some bad points about a kit and you banish them from a group... you are out of line!... you misunderstood the way Leroy presented his statements, he got a bad or an older kit and he was expressing his observations and that was all... I've never meet Leroy, but I can tell you he enjoys building just as much as you.... and if you read along during his quest for a Cub kit, there was a lot of bashing about the Sig kit, no one got disbanded from the Sig Brotherhood for any negative comments made.

I know your type, Australia is full of them.... You don't like what someone writes, do what I'm going to do with your a@#, put them in your ignore list.

One thing I can't stand is an ******** Australian !!

Nope, that's not going to happen here. This is a brotherhood thread and while it may have been started by a member of RCU it now BELONGS to RCU. Plain and simple. The simple matter of fact here is that RCU promotes the basic ideas supported by what a "Brotherhood" does. That's why we love seeing all of them that have popped up here on RCU. And while there are members that do start them and manage them, that does not give them to sole right to "revoke" somebody's membership in a Brotherhood. Come on guys, we have too many other problems in the world these days to world about instead of kicking somebody off of a brotherhood simply because he didn't like the kit he got. Well you know what?? That's perfectly within his right as an American to express his views about a kit, and it's also within his rights as an RCU member to express his views about a kit. And he's not going to removed from a Brotherhood simply because he expressed a negative remark concerning a Balsa USA product. It's just that simple. These brotherhoods help promote the hobby but they are something for one member to use a little power trip. So nobody's going to be "kicked off, removed, or revoked" from the brotherhood for any reason. Let's just move forward a bunch of guys that simply love this hobby.

Yes, [email protected]. As I recall it was $50 and Scott provides all the parts to make the scale "like" sprung with bungies and gives about 3/4" movement. Uses some of the kit parts and Scott provides the new ribs, axle, hubs, bungie material and fair directions. He markets it specifically for the QS D7, but don't see why it wouldn't work just as well with the QS Dr1 or D8. Sub-wing ends up a tiny bit thicker, but has to to provide room for the axle to move.

Well said Ken. Now lets get back to enjoying this thread. I'm still working on my Moraine Saulnier. All the framing is done and I'm working on the elevator controls now. I've fabricated a u-shaped bracket with a single control horn for both elevators. Looks kind of old school but it should work just fine. So far this has been a very enjoyable build and kit quality of my kit has been very good. This is my first 1/3 scale build. Most of my aircraft are 1/4 scale but this larger size is really nice. Takes up a lot of room though.

I built one of those earlier this year and sold it in October. My wing was two piece and I had a servo for each elevator half. I just like doing it this way. I had no real problems other than keeping the fuselage straight. I had a G-62 for power and it was more than enough with a 24-10 prop. Just make sure you have about 2 degrees down and right thrust or it's going to be a bear to fly. I had my ailerons set to go down 50% of up (differential) and mixed in the rudder to be 50% of aileron movement and it flew like a charm. It had no bad habits and was a joy to fly. I sold it as the weight and size was too much on my back.

If building kits was easy then everybody would do it! Some kits are easier to build than others. I never complain about a kit. I'm happy to be able to obtain them. Thanks for this thread, 3136, for I enjoy seeing everyones' models very much! Cheers and have a stout!

Thanks for the info Karp. I'll be sure to incorporate the down and right thrust.

Yes, thicker axel wing is required to get the travel needed. I put bungy gear on both my first tripe, and my DVII. I prefer them without a bungee gear. I have replaced the axel though, with 1/4" music wire though, which is a common mod. I do not have the fortune of flying off grass, so I have optimized my setups to perform on runways. That is nice someone makes a kit though, as many over the years have asked how to do it. I think the key is that it has to be way stiffer than you think.

OK perhaps I was too rude to Leroy, I didn't like what he said on this thread and on his cub thread, so perhaps I defended BUSA a little to vigorously.

I think this is a good moment to pass No1 on to someone else.

I nominate Jwrich.

There is no reason to pass on #1 to anybody else, there is no reason why you can't stay where you are. Just remember that everybody is a Brother no matter what they have to say about Balsa USA. Heck, I called Mark Enderby a few choice words right to his face when they discontinued the Thunderbug model, but that doesn't mean I dislike BUSA any less. Just keep a healthy respect for everybody here and you will do fine.

I think the whole point of what started this ( whatever you want to call it ) is the simple talk about a kit that is normal jabber, lets face it all kits are not created equal and a great kit maker does not make all the kits equal. I had a Sig kit that was just as bad in some areas as the Balsa kit I got, they replaced some die cut sheets as a result (Sig) and the build went ahead however I did replace some of the worm holed and hard wood sheeting in the kit. I can't say that about the wood in the Balsa kit which I found to be very good. When the dies get bad so does the stamping of the parts and they don't fall out as described by the Balsa corp. reference to their quality.

I'm all for sweeping this BS under the bridge and getting back to basics as Ken stated, we really are a brotherhood of like minded fellas doing something we all love and individual opinions will always be a part of it. Lets all of us keep it civil and RCU will work as intended for all to enjoy.

I think 3136 should remain as NUMBER 1. He saw a need to bring together a group of modelers who enjoy building and flying Balsa USA airplanes. With that as been said, I think we can all agree that BUSA produces very good kits, at reasonable costs and are great flying airplanes. They give the builder the foundation to modify or scale detail as much he likes and still have a wonderful flying airplane. We all know building model airplanes can be challenging, some more so than other. I think that is the best reason to have a thread such as Balsa USA Brotherhood thread, to exchange ideas. As you can see from the membership, there are members from all across the country and other parts of the world. My 2 cents

Thanks
Rich
