Put me down, formerly a 1/4 scale Cub with an OS 160 (crashed in bizarre circumstances after 100 hours in the air) and now building a BUSA 1/3 scale Cub as L4 with OS Pegasus 320 . A relaxing change of pace from jets, and working with wood again is such a pleasure. Can't be happier with completeness and quality etc. of BUAS kits.

Welcome David, I knew there were other Balsa USA builders out there. I was in your wonderful country years ago when I was flying out of Germany, very friendly people. Please post pictures of your build, you will love flying the 1/3 scale J-3 Cub.

It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.

Merry Christmas to all

VG,

Question for you. I have an RCGF 60 CC gas engine that I plan to put on my 1/3 scale pup. I would like to run a scale size prop, which I think will be a 33" - 36" diameter. Any idea of a 60 CC engine can handle that much prop? I would set it up so there would be no way to go to full throttle so that I wouldn't bog down the engine. Do you think that would work or would I be better off looking for an engine and gear reduction setup?

The prop size for a 60cc engine is usually 24-10 so I can't see how an RCGF is going to swing a 33-36" prop directly. If you want to use that size prop you'll have to go with a belt reduction system.

Thank you for your welcome. The 1/3 Cub was started some years ago but has now resumed.
I used to fly my 1/4 scale Cub from my garden years ago, my neighbours complained when it was crashed and it's flying stopped, they missed it's gentle purr. (OS 160 twin) !

I hope to do some glider towing with this Cub too and later perhaps put on floats. I used to have great fun flying the real J3 Cub on floats at Jack Brown's seaplane base near Orlando when I was on layover there (I was a 767 captain, but the Cub was more fun!).

I will try and post a few pictures later.

Merry Christmas !

David.

I think you will have to go with a reduction drive such as this. http://www.vogelsang-aeroscale.com/g...eschlundt.html

Otherwise, a significantly larger engine would be needed. I do not think throttling back would be a good idea.

Okay thanks, guys, I'll have to come up with a plan "B". I think the G38 might be too small for my pup which could be in the 40 lbs range after all of the scale detailing is finished.

Perhaps removing some of that scale stuff is the answer.

I have seen them fly with G62's just fine. But if you want that big prop, you will have to install an engine that will spin it. Something in the 120cc range most likely.

Vogelsang has a reduction drive for the G45 and the G62. The only thing I don't like is the big flywheel that is right up front and sticks out through the dummy engine. Maybe I just need to save up for a nice big radial engine to fill the cowl.

That video claims a 32 x 20 prop! That would do it. I think the reduction on the G62 is your best bet, and see if you can't shoe horn your detail around it. They do have to styles, inline and sideways. I am gonna guess this would work.

Some are flying the 1/3 scale pup with the scale detailing with the G38 and the reduction drive. I was thinking that the G45 might work too.

Default Soviet Sopwith Pup Balsa USA 1/4 scale

Just thought I would post a couple photos of Balsa USA's 1/4 scale Sopwith pup I built to match our Full size plane. Completed last year it was built for WW1 Dawn patrol 100 year celebration at National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton Ohio. This is the Full scale plane... Several modifications were made to the BUSA kit to match the full scale plane. Engine used is a Saito GN 180.

I also have a 1/4 scale Fokker DR1 that I built several years ago.. Also BUSA kit.
The kits are fun to build and provide a great base to add any level of scale features that you want.
Great thread Guys!

Hi Rich,

I would like to join the BUSA brotherhood. As you requested, here is my information.

I did not know this would be so involved. Anyway, I have been with BUSA for 20 some years. At this time I have a 1/3 scale Cub, G62,
1/4 scale Cub on floats, OS160 twin, 1/3 scale Morane Saulnier, G62, 1/4 scale Aeronca C3, OS 12 twin, 1/4 scale N17, G26. I had a
1/3 Sopwith Pup (my baby), RCGF 100cc twin and it was lost this year due to a elevator problem. At this time I am building another 1/3 Pup. I
also have underway a 1/4 Spad, almost ready for covering, a 1/4 Sopwith Baby on floats, A 1/4 scale D VIII kit and a 1/3 scale N 17 kit.
My son flies a 1/4 scale DR1, 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup and new for 2015 he has a 1/3 DR1, DA 85cc. All of my WWI planes covered in Solartex,
are hand painted (no decals) and rib stitched. The landing gear in the 1/3 planes are steel tube welded and designed by me. My radios are
Futaba with a mixture of Futaba and Hitech servos.. I was into and still am WWII planes and high wing plans from the 30`s. In the last 3
years, the WWI planes have taken over. 10 years ago I started a War Bird event for our club and 3 years ago I started a Dawn Patrol for our
club. This year from our 2 fly ins, our club donated over $1600.00 to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Well I hope this is enough information to get me started.

Thanks, Rick

Also, I have 163 good rating on RCU.

I guess I am the odd man out running electric in a 1/4 scale BUSA Nieuport 11 and Fokker Dr1.

Before any comments on missing the engine sounds, I am looking at a sound system from Mr. RC Sound http://test.mrrcsound.com/

The version 4.1 system with 3 transducers and a base transducer should put out well over 100db. I will get the WW1 sound chip that has both LeRhone and Gnome start up, engine, shut down and machine gun files.

On the electric systems, I try to match the Kv, prop, voltage and amps to put out ~200oz thrust at 6000 rpm. No vibration and ~15 minutes of flight time. No lead needed to balance just use higher capacity mah batteries in the nose as weight.

Hi Brad,

You are not alone. I have read about guys who are running electrics in 1/3 scale WWI planes. That is another option that I am considering for my pup so I can swing a scale sized prop. I'm just not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Rich6170, are you in the Balsa USA Brotherhood? You have some beautiful planes. I was in Dayton for the Dawn Patrol this year, I think I remember your Pup with with the red star. Let me know if you want to become a brother.

no bad comments from me regarding electric power (I've heard those sound systems in action and they really ARE pretty cool.)
Wendell Hottmann had a 170 Inch Jenny at Watts over Owatonna this past july, flew absolutely beautifully!

Thanks so much.. Sure I would like to be a member. I had a great time with the Guys from BUSA at the event and several of the pilots on the RC side.. It was a bit hectic with so many people crowding around our planes but it was a fun event.
Thanks

Welcome Rich, your number is 98. You are right it was very hectic, I enjoyed every minute of it. This was my 4th trip to the Dayton Dawn Patrol Rendezvous and this was the best ever, beautiful weather, warm temperatures and light winds. We made the early dawn flight three days, I took pictures of my buddy flying as the sun was just breaking. It was great meeting my other friends again. I plan to be at the 2016 event.

Merry Christmas to all
Rich

Count me in the Brotherhood too please, as I am a Team BUSA pilot, builder and the chief mechanic. I keep all the planes flying. Every BUSA plane that is still in the stable is flyable.
