I received this email from Rick who has been trying to post on the BUSA Brotherhood thread. He is going to contact RCU the work out the problem. I spoke with him on the phone, very nice conversation, we have a lot in common, I saw him at the Dayton Dawn Patrol in September. I am going to give number 100. Welcome Rick. This is the email he sent me.

Hi Rich,

I would like to join the BUSA brotherhood. As you requested, here is my information.

I did not know this would be so involved. Anyway, I have been with BUSA for 20 some years. At this time I have a 1/3 scale Cub, G62,
1/4 scale Cub on floats, OS160 twin, 1/3 scale Morane Saulnier, G62, 1/4 scale Aeronca C3, OS 12 twin, 1/4 scale N17, G26. I had a
1/3 Sopwith Pup (my baby), RCGF 100cc twin and it was lost this year due to a elevator problem. At this time I am building another 1/3 Pup. I
also have underway a 1/4 Spad, almost ready for covering, a 1/4 Sopwith Baby on floats, A 1/4 scale D VIII kit and a 1/3 scale N 17 kit.
My son flies a 1/4 scale DR1, 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup and new for 2015 he has a 1/3 DR1, DA 85cc. All of my WWI planes covered in Solartex,
are hand painted (no decals) and rib stitched. The landing gear in the 1/3 planes are steel tube welded and designed by me. My radios are
Futaba with a mixture of Futaba and Hitech servos.. I was into and still am WWII planes and high wing plans from the 30`s. In the last 3
years, the WWI planes have taken over. 10 years ago I started a War Bird event for our club and 3 years ago I started a Dawn Patrol for our
club. This year from our 2 fly ins, our club donated over $1600.00 to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Well I hope this is enough information to get me started.

Thanks, Rick

Great pictures! I think I have seen a couple of them at the Dayton Dawn Patrol this year. It must be nice to work in a place that sells your hobby stuff. Did you build these planes or are you just lucky to get to fly them?

Thanks for the pictures

I built the 1st Albi and the 1/4 scale D vii, Blue Diamond Albi I took home in the bones and finished it, the Red and White D vii I brought back to flying condition. I will post more pictures when I figure out how to get them downloaded.

I hope all had as good or better a Christmas as I did.

I also hope to hear about the new kits everyone received from Santa!

Well I'm back to work on my ¼ scale Balsa USA Pup and as I'm almost finished I have a couple of quick questions.

1) The back of my instruction booklet states the CG point is from the leading edge of the top wing go aft 3" inches. Then there was an addendum that states the CG is 4" inches.

My question to those who have experienced the Pup what CG have you found to be the best?

2) Also what was the approximately amount of added weight to the cowl did you have to add?

Thanks,

Michael

I flew a quarter scale pup several years ago ...... it had the servos under the pilot's seat and was powered with a G-23 which weighed about 3 1/4 lbs. It flew great for sport flying with no additional weight but for scale contest work I added a lead block which weighed slightly over a pound. There is a pretty big CG range on this design ..........at least in my opinion.

I placed marks at the 4" inch and tested the balance. Still a little tail heavy. Yesterday I tested the engine and needed to richen the High end an ⅛ turn.

I plan on the maiden flight on the 1st of January. I'll get photos and try to get some video.

I still need to add the flying wires and weathering before Thursday!

I just thought I'd share. Hope you all don't mind.

Michael

gear reduction is the only way to get that big of a prop on a 1/3 pup with that engine you have 2 choices that i know of mick reeves has a unit for a zenoah g-62 that is 1.75:1 biggest prop i was able to swing with it on my camel is a 30x14 the other is http://www.vogelsang-aeroscale.com/ uses a 2.5:1 reduction and a 34x20 prop

Has anybody used the BUSA Lozengetex on a 1/4 scale D7? Can I get both wings with 1 roll of the light and 1 roll of the dark, or do I need 2 rolls of each?

I keep looking at the Vogelsang unit I'd want the one with the long shaft so that would be $550 plus the motor. I think that's going to have to be on hold for a little.

Not to mention if it is coming from over the pond, the exchange rate is terrible right now. $ = 5/8 lb.

I used a Mick Reeves reduction drive, and was disappointed with the results.I experimented with differented props, and still did not get the results I wanted. The guy I purchased it from said the same thing.I thought it was because his pup was over 40 lbs.,I'm around 32/35 lbs.Any info would be helpful.jeffo

To All,

We fly the proto type 1/3 scale D-VII which is close to a 50# airplane with the Vogelsang reduction unit with a G-62. You can pretty much put the airplane at a 45-50 degree angle and the plane will continue to climb. This combination flies the airplane very well. I personally am not a fan of the reduction units, but they do fly the airplanes well. I personally like the zenoah twins with a 28 x 6 prop for my 1/3 scale airplanes. Everybody has there combinations they like to fly with, a lot of it depends on your flying style.

Too many times people are dissapointed when their model flys in a scale manner. They should go to a place like Rhinebeck or the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum and see how these planes really fly.

I think it is a matter of having practical power, to maintain safe flight and be able to get out of trouble. I did not install a 50cc engine in my DVII to hover the thing. I do fly it in a scale manner. But there were times it would just not climb out properly. I do not even do much in the way of aerobatics honestly. But the larger prop sure helps the roll. The DVII has such small ailerons, and the more air you can get over them sure helps. I would rather fly at 1/4 throttle than at full throttle and pray that I get a good climb out on take off. But this has been my experience. It seems to be completely different than others.

There is a show on TV that documents a group in New Zealand (I think) that builds from scratch and old plans exact replicas of WW1 AC, and then fly them in a scale manner. I will try to get the specs and post it later. I have it copied on my DVR.\

I have used the Balsa USA covering. If you use the 2 meter roll, No, you can not cover both wings with one roll. You can't even cover the top wing in one piece. If you use the 5 meter roll, then yes you can. But there is not a lot of room for errors when cutting the covering into the parts needed. It does hold up well. I have been flying My DVII for 4 seasons and have had zero problems with the covering. Good luck.

Wild bill,
My pup flew just above stall speed wide open,it felt like I was always hanging on the prop.I will say this,it flew like a trainer, real slow, hands off as you watch it go from one end of the field to the other.I just seen videos that really pulled the pup around with authority, and mine did not.Maybe it's the drive unit.jeffo

I caught that program really great to see a group replicate these aircraft. I found it interesting that they refused to incorporate any new technology or materials. They built them from original plans as they were built back then with no changes,

Mike
