OK everyone,
I'm finishing up my 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup, I still have some painting and clean-up to do, but I want to get the maiden flight in first. I am powering mine with a HK-20cc gasser, and I was wondering what the average/normal amount of nose weight required to get these to balance?

My 1/4 Pup with a G-26 actually ended up a touch nose heavy, which I adjusted by having the battery packs a bit rearward from where I'd normally put them. No bad flight characteristics, in fact it's very stable in the air. I rarely need to use full-power either, so I'm sure yours will be fine.

I've not been on RC Universe in a long time, but I subscribed to this thread back then. Not sure if I'm in the Brotherhood or not?
I've built several Balsa USA kits and have the 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup left to go. I had the 1/3 scale version, but realized that once built, I wasn't sure I'd be able to get it out of my basement workshop!
Here is my Balsa USA Northstar off the www.IndyHobbies.com website:

HelloScott, I checked the list of members of Balsa USA Brotherhood and you are not listed. This thread is for folks who enjoy building & flying Balsa USA planes and share ideas, hints, tips and general knowledge. If you would like to be a member of the brotherhood, all you have to do is ask. If you have any questions about a BUSA kit, I am sure someone in this brotherhood can answer it. Nice web site, do you own Indy Hobbies?

Good Day all, Would love to have a number and be part of the group. Pics to follow. Currently flying 4 Balsa USA WW 1 Warbirds. SPAD 13, 1/4 Pup, Eindecker 90, and A 1/4 DR 1. Nothing beats a Balsa USA kit.

OK Guys, now for a Balsa USA question. In the last 2 years after 21 years of flying I have decided to go all Warbirds. I love to wheel and deal so last week I traded mt last nitro plane for this Dr 1. Overall not a bad plane. markings inside seam to have me thinking it was built around 2008. Power is a g38 which seams to run well. I did change out servos to a higher torque Hitec just to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, LOL. One of the first items I found wrong was the rudder control rod had rusted and no longer allowed for proper moment. Was able to remove the rudder and brass tube from rear of fuse, Heat, clean, oil, and now works great. Now question in hand, The plane shows signs of flight and the owner did advise it flew well, But after a nose to tail inspection I found all 3 leading edges are what appeared to be flat or unsanded. I have built many kits over the years and I am pretty sure the leading edge should be rounded. I hate to strip her down but with plans not in front of me I am not for sure what the contour of the leading edge should be. Any advise or anyone have plans to one. I hate to fly her with 3 brakes.

I'll bet those flat leading edges don't hurt the flying a bit. WW I planes have so much drag that a little more might not make any difference. Lot's of people fly small planes made from flat foam that fly great. I built a 1/3 scale Eindecker (11 ft span) out of flat foam and it flys good too.

I love the Eindecker. Thinking of blowing the plans up on my Eindecker 90 about 3 times and scratch building one. I was thinking the same about the leading edge. DR 1 is for low and slow anyway so should be ok. About the onlt thing I need to make sure is a 100% is the rudder.. LOL
#989
Yoda , you could always glue some balsa on to those front flat edges, shape it and paint/cover the leading edge. What ever you end up painting the leading edge wouldn't look bad. Heck there are so many crazy DR1 schemes nobody may even notice.

I'll join in. E III Eindecker 90 built sevral years ago. Solortex covered and currently has a Saito 90 4-stroke. It's made three trips to the Rhinebeck Jamboree. Third hand 1/4 scale J-3 Cub built in the mid 80's with an 80's vintage OS 120 4-stroke ( early model with dual rocker covers). Currently building the 1/6 scale Nieuport 28C. Nearing the end of covering and close to final assembly. Will have a Saito 56 4-stroke.

Yoda, This is my SPAD XIII, I am not completely finished with yet. This is the longest building project I have ever had, in over 30 years building RC airplanes. I started in Oct 2010, had some serious health issues, that derailed me for a few months, then I worked little at a time through today. I am determined to have it flying by July. I have one of two engines for it, a Zenoah 38 and a DLE 35ra, I have set up the fire wall for each. Anyway here are a couple pictures of SPAD XIII.

Very nice Rich. They fly great to be a WW 1 plane. I purchased mine in 2012 after the builder attempted to fly 3 times with the same outcome. After a good once over I found several issues that were making it stall after take off. 1. Too little power with too much nose weight needed to balance. Why I decided to squeeze a DLE 55 under the hood. 2. The wing incidence was way off. Contacted Balsa USA for specs and was able to dial in perfect. and last was wing strength. I think he built it without sheer webs. Have not cut open to see but the wings had alot of flex, So just decided to install fly wires. First flight for me was in a 15 mph cross wind. Perfect. Love the plane and for WW 1 she is fast. DLE 55 a little much but fits and thats what they make a throttle stick for. LOL
