I used thin glue lines from a plastic squeeze bottle with a very tiny hole from the Martha Stewart collection of artsy craftsy stuff at Micheals. Took me less that 2 hours to do the rib stitches on the wings and tailplane on my Ziroli Stearman.

Sorry mate, I don't have any pics.
What I did was got a bit of plywood and marked out the intervals of what stitching I wanted then drilled and put in nails on the left and right sides of the board.
So you have a line of nails going vertically up and down on the left and another set on the right.
Then in the middle space stick down some masking tape to cover the entire area.
Then tie some string at the top left nail, run it to the right, down one nail and back to the left.
So you basically have a pattern of evenly spaced horizontal lines of string sitting on top of the masking tape.
Then use wood glue to stick the string to the tape, let dry well.
Cut with a very sharp knife vertically strips the width you want.
Sick down on the wing then iron a wider strip over the top of solartex.
Then you end up with simulated stitching and the covering tape.
Let me know if it doesn't make sense, I'll draw some pics.

Here is what I do for a standoff scale rib stitching.. I do painting and weathering with water based acrylic paints on the covering.. then I lightly clear them with rustoleum clear. Once I have my wings painted.

1. I lay a piece of masking tape down the ribs the right width for wing tape..

2. I spray a slightly darker color of paint down the tape.. I use thinned acrylic paint in my airbrush (VEGA 2000 love it) this shades the sides of the tape and when you take the tape off it makes the strip look lifted off the wing.

3. Now I take a lighter colored chalk and draw some angled short lines across the rib tape area.. I do light over darker colors.. and darker STITCHES over light areas like the white on roundels and insignias. This simulates highlights, or shadows. I will add I don't usually use white chalk for this. When you use white chalk it disappears almost completely when cleared. You have to lay on typical white chalk HEAVY to make it apparent after a clear coat.

4. Then since I fly mainly electric and GASOLINE motors I topcoat with two light dusting coats of Rustoleum clear.. I DO NOT lay on a wet coat that flows out. This leaves it flatter and I have had no problems so far.

Maybe you will like the look and give it a try. I am just glad I have found ways over the years in this hobby to use some of my art skills ... heaven knows painting on canvas will never put money on my table !

Has anyone in the brotherhood built the Balsa USA Excalibur kit of late? I am in a nostalgic mood but I don't want to start a long term build like a WWI scale airplane right now.

Flyboy077,
I made mine all out of bass, it has really held up well. That was until it fell off the shelf and landed on the Ural, Now it is epoxied and wrapped about two times with Duct tape. The problem with the balsa on the top and bottoms is when you land a little more on the left or right wheel the sub wing flexes. Your not the first, we are working on a solution. Just think if they had Duct tape around in the WWI era.

Oh, I almost forgot. I am looking for a built 1/3 scale D7. After watching the 4 D7 formation flight in Fond du lac this past weekend I have got to have one. I normally build all my planes but I have 3 projects going on and no time for at least a couple of years to build one. BUSA has a house 1/3 scale D7 that I fly but when the fun starts the boss gets to fly it.

Wild Bill,
I don't know what could have made those flights any cooler, except for maybe some pyrotechnic effects on the ground or in-flight video which I had a go-pro mount made but did not have another SD card to put in the camera. Great flying with you and Mark!

Please add my name to the brotherhood! I recently built a Stick .40 Plus, powered by a PAW .40 diesel. I liked it so much that I picked up a Stingray 120, powered it with a DLE 20, and just finished the build yesterday. Pictures to follow! Thanks,

Jeff

Welcome Jeff, we will be watching for your pictures. Tell us a little bit about flying in Alaska, I would think you have a lot of building time.

It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.

Like to join but I don't think I can even get off the ground. Just finish building 1/4 BUSA sopwith pup but boy I must be a poor builder. I used coverall and dope with paint, build custom landing gear with bungee shocks, steerable tail "stick" and flying wire and powered with Zenoah ZP26 with electronic ig. THe bad news it took almost 4lbs of lead in the front and the planes weights 18lbs Should I even try to fly this concrete brick? Any advise would be great !

it should fly

My 1/4 D7 weighs 6 pounds more than that and flies great ... Your plane has a lot more wing.... Also I think Balsa USA is real generous on the CG.. so if it doesn't slow down and flare nice at the end..start taking a little weight out each flight until you find the better CG location.

If I remember correctly, my old 1/4 scale Pup weighed about 14 lbs ready to fly. After flying it a while I added nearly 3 lbs to the firewall to get it flying more scale like. Power was a G23. I don't think you will have any trouble...... the air frame will carry the weight just fine.

At 18# its a tad under 21 oz per sq ft. why wouldn't it fly. My 1/4 N28 weighs 16 1/2# these days and flies fine at almost 24 oz per sq ft. with an old Zen G23.

I beefed up heaps of things in my 1/4 pup build which in hindsight was silly, mine is 20lb and flies just fine.

Can I get in too? Looking to finish up my BUSA 1/3 scale D.VII. Build thread:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/gian...vii-build.html

I also have a BUSA 1/3 scale Ercoupe to finish. Build thread:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/gian...3-ercoupe.html

Last but not least, I bought, but have yet to begin working on, a BUSA 1/3 scale Albatros D5. I'll create a build thread when I start that one, but it won't be any time soon, if even this year, Too many other projects to finish first.

Mistral 12, sorry I didn't see that you wanted to join the brotherhood. I have the 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup also with a very old G 23 and it flys great. Maybe you can post a picture of your Pup, we all would like to see it. Don't worry I am sure it will fly well.

You are now a member of the Balsa USA Brotherhood!
