"Bird", I built the 1/3 scale Fly Baby Biplane in 82, when I was stationed in Germany. I was on a German Air Show Team with another GI, we traveled Europe with them. We performed in the Paris Air Show in '83, that was th high-lite of my 4 year stay in Germany. I kept the Biplane until 2004, when I sold it. During those years, it flew in 7 countries and 5 US states. The pictures of FB-b I was taken in 2004 when I put it up for sale, I didn't scan the ones from back in the day.

I think I regretted selling soon after it was gone. As it turned out a club member had a Fly Baby Bi that was given to him by his uncle. We made trade and I rebuilt/recovered it to look like my first one. I powered it with Fiji 50 and it flew great, however I found out the flying wires were required. The top wing broke in half and extensive repairs are required.

By the way, I have had a couple heart attacks also. We have deal with the hand we are dealt. So keep building and flying.

Nice looking FBB. I have mine drilled for an OS320 Pegusus. A friend of mine did one around 90 or so. The engine is five pounds and will take lots of weight in the tail to balance. I'm thinking of putting my brison 3.2 in it. It's 50 cc's. Aught todo fine, I have a quadra 52 in the Pawnee and it weighs in at 34. Should be 24-26 but she's a little fat like her daddy! Flies great.

Now just hold on Foodstick, that reduction drive is set aside for a DVII, is it not? Although a 120 inch Flybaby might be interesting too.....

No, I don't think so ......... no acreage needed - the club field is plenty big enough .......... your videos show plenty of room, I'm sure of that!

Art, I was referring to home storage issues.

If you see what I have going on in my basement and garage... well lets just say its embarrassing !

Its hard to turn down good deals on planes, kits and tools, and I have been filling every square inch with no room to spare.. I am not actually sure where the 1/3 DR1 is going yet ! hahahah

That doesn't mean I don't want to start two new giant scale planes though !

At least you have a basement I have a ranch style house built on a slab. Between the clay soil, water table, etc basements aren't recommended out here. I'm sure the earthquakes we have had of late wouldn't be good on a basement ether, still there are times I wish I had a basement.

If I was starting over as a young guy with unlimited energy I would be living in a nicely fitted out steel building , 1/4 house 3/4 shop with airplane racks as far as the eye could see

I really feel the need to build every WW1 multiwing Balsa USA sells

Or at least a 51 % N 11 to sit next to Art's .... hahahah

Hey Rich, sorry to hear about that mate. Listen to what the doc says though, they often tell you all the things you don't want to hear, but need to hear.

I've had very little time for rc stuff lately with a business to run and a young family, hopefully the young fella (almost 3) will show an interest as I have a number of kits set aside for him.

Cheers Mark

Hi Guys,

I posted this question under " Eindecker Build ", but then realized that many may not be building Eindeckers or reading my question. Thus, I am posting it here again.

I am presently in the finishing stages of a Balsa USA Eindecker 90 and really at a loss on how to attach the windshield. I have viewed many builds of the same model and many have just left the windshield off, but I am considering attaching the windshield to my model, but am at a loss on how to do it. Would anybody happen to have any ideas or good suggestions on how to attach the windshield ?

Thus far, the model is finishing up really nice and I would hate at this point in time to cobb it up with a sloppy gluing job.

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

What style of windscreen are you planning? If you have a frame I would make it out of fiberglass and attach it with a bit of glue and a few 00 screws.

No frame and just sheet of plastic windscreen. Presently looks like I will frame it with rubber molding and attach it with Super Glue and some very small screws. At least the screws may allow it to look original.

From what I have observed, most folks that that have built this model have omitted the windshield.

Granpooba, don't use super glue to attach the wind screen. It is too brittle and will easily over run the subject. It would be better to use RC-56 that is flexable and can easily be removed in case of an over run or a start over.

I think the reason you see a lot of models without a windscreen is because a lot of WWI Eindeckers didn't have one. I suspect the windscreen was an "In the field" modification. I have been refreshing my memory by viewing old photographs taken during the war and it appears to be the case. Are you modeling a specific aircraft that had one or is the model generic in nature and this is a personal preference?

Hi Guys....
Back in the 80's I built the 1/3rd scale Fly Baby Biplane... Great flying airplane, I just picked up a 1/3 Scale Morane Saulnier A-1. This airplane was in storage for 10 years and it never did fly with the original builder. Here are some pictures....

I have a few questions...... Biggest question is how do you access the two bolts that join the wing together? I did remove the cowl, wiped the dust off the engine and found that there is an almost new Zenoah G 38, it is the older round case engine but has very little run time on it.... No lead in the airplane and it is around 18 pounds dry.... It does seem to balance well at the suggested CG point... It has the older quarter scale servos in it... I am open to any thoughts and suggestions!! thanks in advance!!

Bipenut.. very interesting plane. At first I thought a G38 in such a big plane? But at 18 pounds.. it is pretty light. I am shocked its a 1/3 and not a 1/4 at that weight

FlyerinOKC Those windscreens can be trouble ! haha
My N11 has one and it causes the wind to circle around and come up behind the pilot.. for the life of me I can't get the scarf to flap back nicely

You can really see it in the on board footage..

I have often wondered how many WWI pilots ended up in the care station from prolonged ingestion of Castor oil fumes? Visions of the Civil Ware came to mind when diseases like dysentery killed more men than bullets.

I have heard some pilots did have the same effect as if they were drinking the oil over a flight ... Lets just say they didn't pull over to a rest area...

I measured it out and it is a 1/3rd scale, 103" wingspan, 68" long... It is impressive to stand next to, I started cleaning 10 years of dust, dirt and fly droppings off.... It is going to take longer than I figured, but that is always the case on such a project. Mild soapy water is what I am using.... Not sure how good the paint is on it so I figured I would take the safe way....

Bipennut49 ,I'd prolly put some modern servos in it, other than that balance it (or leave it alone if you're happy with it) and go fly.

Scarves on WWI pilots, ahem, that's a Hollywood thing, having that strangler flapping in the breeze. The scarf was tucked tightly in the tunic for warmth or pulled up over the nose/mouth to filter the aforementioned castor oil. Those guys all had to make a latrine call before debrief. lol So tuck the scarf in and don't worry about how well it flows back in flight. Aw shucks.

Having had a sucession of 60's Austin Healy, MG, and Triumph British roadsters, I LOL when I see the old ads showing a model in the car at speed with her hair and or scarf flowing nicely back. It just did, not happen that way. Likely the WW! pilots had the same problem??
