The main reason pilots wore silk scarfs was to prevent neck chafing. Pilots had to constantly swivel their heads to look behind them.

The best canopy glue I've found is "E6000". Sticks to anything, dries crystal clear, and you can cut it if you need to remove the item. Basically the same stuff as the old "Shoe Goo" or "PFM".

I like E6000 for a lot of things also. One advantage of the RC-56 is it is water cleanup (until dry)

My only complaint with RC-56 is it seems like every time I have bought it lately it is just too runny.. Maybe I got a bad batch.

I had heard it was to wipe the oil off their goggles because the rotary engines had no exhaust systems since the engine spun with the prop and the exhaust came back straight into their faces. Sometimes I think the WWI airplanes were designed to make the pilot as uncomfortable as possible if they didn't kill him.

Personally I like to run a tank that only has enough fuel for about 15 minutes max ...

I had a friend that lost a 104 inch Corsair because he had a huge gas tank and the throttle stuck at too high of a setting to land.. Unfortunately he ran out of receiver battery before fuel and the plane was destroyed. there are other options like kill switches obviously..

I seldom fly longer than ten minutes a flight, and plan on it running out 3-5 minutes after that.

It all depends on your personal taste, but that is the way I pick a tank. I usually run them on test stands so I see about how long they will run on the test stand.

My 1/4 BUSA N-28 has a 30cc engine and a 16oz tank. The only time I ever came close to running out of gas was at a fly in. We put up a gaggle of WW I planes and I was having so much fun a forgot about the time. I landed and ran out taxiing back to the pits.

I use 16 oz. tanks because I more of them. Most of my airplanes are 1/4 scale and need the weight in the nose using G-38, G-26 and DLE 35. I recommend, what ever tank use, you should fly your normal flight pattern, let's say 12 min. Then start your clock, gain some altitude over the field, make others aware what you are doing, then fly until you are out of gas. This will give a base line to set your timer. Works for me!

Monsour, I think you want to become a member of the BALSA USA Brotherhood. It is customary to post pictures of you BUSA models and share your experiences with them. As you have read on this thread, we all enjoy sharing and adding helpful advice. You are number 123, a first name is always helpful.

It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature.
If I have missed anyone please let me know.

My 1/3 scale DRI in the bones. My 1/4 scale DVII looks sort of short next to this bird.

Here is my latest Balsa USA model ....... a work in progress.
There sure are a lot of pieces and parts to cover.

.
All the wings and tail pieces are covered and rib stitched and ready for paint.

I still have the fuse to cover.

This is the color scheme I have chosen..... the green one. It is an early DVII - I like the Maltese crosses.

Art, when did you find time to build the D VII? I like the Maltese Cross too. 1 Question, will it fit into your mini-van or will Rhonda buy you a bigger transporter, LOL.

Hi Rich

Yes. I test fit Greg Hahn's DVII fuselage last fall at a fly-in - - - before he stuck it into his trailer I slipped it into the back of my Dodge mini-van and it fit like a glove!
Oh and I didn't have time to build it...... Greg built it for me .....we did a little trading.

A bigger transport for my planes - I wish - but I don't think that is going to happen.

Cheers,
Art

I know that there were several designs of the Maltese cross. Not sure they went away from it..
