Hope the weather is good for you guys. The last event (2014) was the best weather we ever had, it was 4 days of great flying. I have been going to these Dawn Patrols since 2007. I will miss this one, I could not get anyone to make the trip with me. Age and health issues has caused the wife to refuse to allow me the make the trip alone. She does have a valid point. Please post pictures and have fun

Sorry to hear you can't make it. Yes the weather in 2014 was great, but the way it looks for this weekend you might not be missing much.

May I have the next number in the brotherhood? I currently own a Phaeton II that I've built and flowen. I put a OS Max 61 FS in mine. Flies great. Had a mishap 20 years ago and now I need to recover wings.
Still in kit form I have a Phaeton II (second one), Phaeton 90, J-3 Cub, Super Stik .60 (needs to be covered, also one still in kit), Der Jager, and building a Swizzle Stick .40. Also just last January my wife and I drove up to take a tour of Balsa USA. I got a kick out of seeing how there done. Bob was a good person to talk to.
Thanks
Jay

Welcome Jay!! I built the Phaeton II back in '86 flew it a few years until I had a midair with another plane. Totaled , but it was great while I had it. I have built many Balsa USA planes and I would love to visit factory. If you have read through this thread you have seen some of my W W I airplanes. You should try one , they fly fantastic.

We like to see pictures of your Balsa USA planes, even if they are under construction. Maybe you could do a construction thread here on RCU. I am happy to award you a Blasa USA Brotherhood number.
Welcome Brother

It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.

Thanks Rich
I'll work on getting some pictures posted soon. I've been looking at the 1/4 scale Sopwith Camel F-1. I just can not get over the cost of it. I've been out of the hobby for about 15 years now, and I'm just getting back into it. First things first, once I get more stick time I can back to flying things like my P-51 Mustang.
Yes I have been going through the post's here and you guys have some nice airplanes. Has anyone built and flowen the Fly Baby Bipe? I've been looking at this kit since the 80s right before they discontinued the kit, I'm glad they brought it back. How does it fly? Bob at BUSA claims it will fly like a trainer. I find that hard to believe but the Phaeton II did fly very nice.

A guy in our club had the big Flybaby Bipe.. It was the biggest plane I saw fly for years... It was so slow and docile , and had a grungy old Snoopy stuffed animal in the cockpit..every year it got mangier and dirtier. (Snoopy).. hahahah

I think the guy only lived a mile or two from the field and he hauled the plane with the fuselage strapped on the roof of his car! He drove slow of course

Nice, where I fly, the guys don't fly anything bigger than one of the 3D planes with about a 80in wingspan. Most fly electric planes now days. My fear is the field is not big enough for a 1/3 scale plane. It's kind of tight. Maybe I'll build my 1/4 scale Cub and take it out there to see how much room I'll really have. I'd hate to build something like a Sopwith Camel just to lose it in the tree's.
I do hope to be able to get a FB Bipe one day, I just love those biplanes. I had about 20 flights on my Phaeton II before I lost it on a landing one day. Lucked out though, all I did was mess up the covering on the wings and ripped the ailerons off. Easy enough fix but since I quit flying for 15 years I need to get some trainer time in first. Next year I'm sure.
Thanks for the reply

Jay, the Fly Baby Biplane was my first giant scale airplane. I was stationed in Bitburg, Germany in 1981-1985 when I was in the Air Force. In 1982 I won $500.00 on the Super Bowl pool. I bought the FB Biplane kit, gas engine, covering material, and a new radio. Things were a lot cheaper then. I spent a year-+ building the Fly Baby Bip. A friend & I were on a German Air Show team with a group of German flyers. For 2 years we traveled around Europe performing at events. Over the course of 22 years, my first FB Bip flew in 7 countries and 5 US states. In 2004, I sold it to another modeler in West Virginia. It still looked great, in a short time I wished I had never sold it. In 2006, I traded for another FB Bip, it looked ragged and I wanted to make it look like my original. So I striped it, repaired & recovered, new engine, and radio. Yes, it did fly great!! well I did managed over stress the wings, top wing can off. I still have it, to some day repair it.
So I do recommend the Fly Baby Biplane and it is a great first giant scale airplane. Here are pictures of my first Baby taken in 2001 after flying at an event and the Baby II in 2006.

Fly Baby, 1982

Fly Baby II

I build and fly World War 1 1/4 scale plane now and of course they are Balsa USA kits. Keep us posted on you progress, if you have any questions, this is the place to ask them.

Rich thank you, man you do a nice job. Did you paint the Fly Baby? Please do not tell me you used monokote to do that. I just covered a Kadet MK II but it sure didn't come out that nice. I think I need to replace my iron so I can get better control of the heat. My iron is about 25 years old. I've been away from building for 15 years and I'm just gettin back into it. O-well a little practice and I'll get better.

I can remember being able to get all I needed at a decent price. Now a Fly Baby is almost $500. And radios, what happened to buying a complete system all in one box. Boy did stuff get expensive.

Ok enough of that. I'll keep you posted on my progress and I'll get some pics put up soon.
Happy flying

At that time Balsa USA sold the kit, a Quarda 35 gas engine and cover-rite covering (15') (fabric), the radio I got from Hobby Shack a 7 channel Circius. I did paint the covering on both planes. You will get better with practice, I have been building and flying RC airplanes since '73.

When were you in the Navy and where were you stationed? I started out in the USNR and was on the USS Benner DD 807 out of Long Beach Cal. Too much water and too much time at sea, for this Okie Boy. I joined the USAF after I was discharged. I was an aircraft Loadmaster from 1966 to 1972 flying on C-130E, C-141A and the C-5A. After the war (lost some friends) I got tired of living out of a bag and cross-trained into Civil Engineering. As time went on I got my degree as a Structional Engineer. I retired after 26 years and with to work for Northrup at Vance AFB. I must say I enjoyed all of it, the good times and the bad times.

I went in the Navy in Oct 1976. I stayed for 20 years, took the retirement. When I got back home I went into cabinet making for a few years. My last job was with a publishing company until I retired from that.

I started my navy life in Florida until they sent me to the USS Midway homeported in Japan. After two years I was sent to northern California with the VPs. From there I went to Texas to a training comand and then over to Jacksonville Fl. with the VPS again. From there I came back to Illinois for recruiting duty then back out to northern California for my last tour before I retired. In all my travels, I've been all the way around the world and like 9 different countries. I couldn't wait to get out but from time to time I dream about being back in. I saw a lot and I did a lot, can't complain at all. Not to bad, 20 years in and only two years 6 months spent on a ship. The planes I worked on was to big to go on a carrier. I enjoy my retirement pay everyday. Now days you don't get your retirement pay until you reach 65 years old.

Put me on the list also, I'm building the J3 Cub with a AGM 30cc engine. Hope to have her in the air next season. Looking forward to seeing what others are doing with the Cub.

I have had my battles with the VA. Don't believe what you hear on TV that the VA is getting better. That is just Bull*****!!!!!

Good morning everyone.
I need some suggestions. When I get my rendition of a Swizzle Stick done I'm going to need to paint it. I don't know what to use now. Sig no longer makes their Sky Kote painting system, so what do you guys use? I've heard enamel and latex paint but I need something in a spray can. Has anyone used Krylon spray paint?, does it hold up to fuel? Any suggestions I could get sure would help.
Thanks Jay

Jay, Tower Hobbies has Top Flite LustreKote paint that is fuel proof and it will match MonoKote covering. It sells for $6.99 a spray can plus shipping. Some local hobby shops also sell it. One can should be enough to do what you need for the stick. Years ago when I was flying glow engines, I think Rust-0leum paint was fuel proof. You might try spraying on some balsa, allow it to completely cure, then spray a little glow fuel in a spray bottle on it. I never used it myself cause we had fuel proof paint.

Thanks Rich
I just checked tower and they have very little Lusterkote available. Only two colors left. I think it's just like everything else, it's quickly becoming a thing of the past. I have used it in the past and I really like it. The younger folks coming into this hobby just don't build today. I think the other problem is the amount of people using electric motors now. The paint doesn't need to be fuel proof. I have a can of Rust-Oleum here at the house so I'll have to try that.

Is the Rust-Oleum what you used? I'm not sure I understand your post, sorry.

Thanks for your help guys. I do appreciate it.
