I prefer to lightly sand the cowling to get any release compound off apply a high build up primer then fill small imperfections with glazing putty then sand again. From there you can look it over and decide what you want to do next. Like anything you get out of it what you put into it.

You should always wash the part with a mild soap and water first to get the release agent off.

Sanding it first might actually force some of the release agent into the scratches that later would cause paint to not stick well.

Wash and dry it first, then proceed to sanding/primer/paint.

FlyerInOKC, Bill S.
Thank you both for your input. I will use your tips in the near future.

Bill S.,
I did look into fiberglass specialty a little further and they state the don't remake their molds. When they become non-usable they just discontinue that part. So if a cowl fit perfectly 10 years ago, a new part today should fit the same.

Thanks guys , you've been very helpful.

Welcome Jim, You got the next number. Tell us a little about your planes and post pictures of them. We all would like to see them. What do you have for power in them? Also, do you like to go the Dawn Patrol and War Bird events. I like the War Birds Over Texas host by the North Dallas club. One of the rules first established was that we all post pictures of our birds. Again Welcome, Brother!

It would be helpful for me if all
BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Just got this cowl from Fiberglass Specialties for the TF GS Corsair. I ordered it and got a shipping notification the next day. Looks great and fits well. Here are some pics.

Welcome Bandit59, I have been out of town so I am a little late assigning you a number. You are going to love you Cub, seem like I have always had a Cub. I hope you do a construction thread, they are so helpful to others who may want to build one or need advice during their build.

It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for the welcome. It's nice to have brothers since I was the only boy with 4 sisters. LOL
Thanks,
Fred

Older or younger sisters? My father had 4 older sisters so I can understand how you feel!

Two older than me and two younger. I'm right in the middle. Just right to get into a lot of trouble growing up. Can you imagine 7 people getting ready in the morning with only one bathroom. Talk about time management. LOL
Later,
Fred

My dad use to say he enlisted into the Army in 1940 to get off the farm where he was living. I think he was just trying to get away from his sisters. My aunt use to tell the story of when he was in the Pacific she hadn't heard from him in 6 months and was worried. So she sends him $5 and some time later receives a letter saying "Dear Sis, thanks for the five! Love Dewey".

Swizzle Stik 30 build update
Fuselage is done and wing is 3/4 done. Took time to figure out how to put in ailerons. I have a lot of sanding to get done then I'll be ready to cover. Shouldn't be to long now. I can go fly in the snow.

Swizzle Stik?! An airplane you mix your drinks with?! ;-) I'll just get my hat and be on my way...

You put a piped hot 40 on it and hover over your drink. Lower the tail into the drink and do a torque roll (need to add ailerons to the build). The castor residue adds a touch of smoothness to your drink, as well as its' obvious gastrointestinal benefits.

Many of us Old farts learned to fly on the Swizzle Stick 40, it was real cheap to buy, and quick to build. Easy to repair also.

I had a friend who had a couple Swizzle Stiks thwey were his favorite everyday fly.

Anyone here ever build the Phaeton II bipe kit? I'm debating between it and the Excalibur.

I built the original Phaeton bipe - it was listed for 40 power back in the day. I had a K&B 40 on it and it flew good and had pretty good aerobatic as I recall. I would think that the Pheaton II would be as good a flyer - maybe even better ..... everyone knows that bigger flies better!

I flew Swizzle Stiks way back when, just for the fun of it. I thought getting another one would be fun and nostalgic, I like to fly what others don't .

Yes Rich I've built and flown the Phaeton II bipe, love that bird. Not really difficult to build and really fun to fly. Once I get some stick time in I'm going to repair mine and get it flying again. I used an OS Max 61 FS in mine and it did just great. This time I'm planning to use a OS Max 70 FS, it should give it just a little more umph for those aerobatic days. At some point down the road I'll build my Phaeton 90. I hope it flys just as well as the small one.

Thanks Guys!

I have been debating I have been pinching pennies like a miser and have a little bit in my hobby fund. I'm planning on ordering the C-195 Businessliner short kit from Rich Uravitch I have been procrastinating on purchasing forever (i already have plans, plastic, and the back issue with the build article on hand). I have about enough left to order one more small kit. I am debating between the Balsa USA Phaeton II or the Dumas de Havilland Dragon Rapide (42')

So many airplanes so little time!
