Spaceworm, I get what your saying. I just finished my kadet mk 2 and my swizzle stick 30. I used monokote on both and yes I do agree it's different now than when I quit flying 20 years ago. I still like monokote but I have to get use to the way it works. I think monokote sticks down better now, or maybe I'm doing better because I found and watched tutorials before I used it this time. Tutorials on monokote were not availible back in the 70's when I started.
Thanks for the input guys.

Actually Spaceworm , monocote will do everything the old would do. Yes it has changed but then so do you. It's basically learning how to use it again. The white is the most difficult. You tack it down the same way then seal the L.E. or T.E. and then start in the middle pulling it as you run the iron towarts you then tack it and move over and do it again. If you do it the old way, you'll never get it to stretch enough to tighten. The military flats are a breeze! They nearly go around compound tips by themselves. Beautiful stuf!

My BUSA Phaeton II getting ready to strip her down. I'll go through to make sure she's still sound, repair anything that needs it and recover in monokote. This should be a fun project.

Anyone here ever own and fly the BIG Gere Sport? I have only seen one stripped down for sale at an auction.. Never been lucky enough to see one flown. Just curious what pilots/builders thought of them?

Hey as long as I have them, why not? Yes I finally moved into the realm of modern rc, plus tower hobby is not selling the old frequency radios any longer. I still have a few old radios that work so I'll use them til they die

I stripped the Phaeton II today using the heat gun method. It did work better than I thought it would but you really have to watch how close you get to the wood. The balsa will burn if your not careful. I'm now sanding the fuselage down and looking it over for any repairs that might be needed. Once the fuselage is done I'll get to the wings. I'll have her back in the air in no time.

Good job big stick! Never had a burn issue with the heat gun................unless it's an industrial gun! is it? Serious heat there! If you have serious fuel soaking, take some kitty litter, preferably new, hehe!, put it in a blender, preferably when mama ain't watching and make powder out of it. Just put some on the effected area and let it set for a few hours or over night. Repeat! till the powdwer is 'all' light grey. Some times the surface will be gooey, when you are done, wipe down with MEK, Methek-Ethel-keytone and it will clean up. MEK will not do the job alone. If the wood piece is small enough, put it in a can or container and pour the powder
over and around it, repeat till nice and dry grey.
Let me know if you run into any other issues and I can help. I have done extensive rebuilds and have lots of remedies, too many to cover right now.
Later, bird.
P.S. MEK is a compounding poison, meaning that it will build up in your system till it is toxic! And then you're in trouble/sick/dead! Meaning it will not ago away in time, use gloves and ventilate well.
BTW, who uses ZINGER props anymore? If memory serves, they were terrible! Maybe you like them, if so, sorry no offense.

Bird, the wood is not fuel soaked, what tried to burn was the residue from the covering and paint. I used a top flite monokote heat gun. It's one of the old ones and it will surely put out some heat. You can melt a hole in monokote if you hold it on to long.
I'm pretty familiar with MEK. I used it a lot while painting real aircraft in the Navy. No all is good, I've got some sanding to do then on to recovering.

I've used them since day one in the hobby and always had great luck with them. It was a sad day earlier this year when they closed their doors.

I bought the zinger prop when I first put the Phaeton II together. I've flown this plane for many years without a single problem. To me the zinger worked just as well as any master airscrew prop I've ever used. I'm on the bottom end for power with a 4 stroke and the zinger pulled this bipe around with authority.

Well guys, as I said I mean no offense. I love their wood props but always found other plastic props to out pull the 'zingali' props as I think they are labled as. To each his own!
My reasoning is the airfoil profile between the root and tip, the zingali was very thick and the master airscrew is thinner and and more 'cupped',if you will, and therefore more profficient. Again, my opinion.
BTW, MEK will not hurt monocote or even solartex. Works great for cleaning smeared colors off. BUT! It will take the color and glue off the other side! Not good for after run clean up either. Just good ole rubbing acohol, wipe off the goo and use acohol..............no soap or special formula! sure they work too but alcohol is simplier and more effective. How'd we get into that? Just expounding a bit.

My Feedback: (5)
This is the first year in the last 14 that I do not have a project on the building board. The only thing I am working on is an F4-u 20cc arf by Hanger 9. Not what I would call a winter project. The SPAD has no release date that I know of. So it is not going to be done this winter. And I know that I have sworn never to build another wing with scalloped trailing edges, but how many 1/3 scale SPADs are out there? And sitting next to the 1/3 scale Triplane would be pretty neat.

My friend built the 1/4 spad last year, and wow does it have a lot of interesting shaped pieces in it, lots of scallops.. I helped him get it all punched out, edges sanded, and labeled..

Welcome, Bob, I have given you a number, Welcome the Brotherhood. I hope one the brothers knows about a Taube 90 build on one of the forums. The Taube kit has been around a long time, surely there is a construction thread out there. You should check the forums on RCU (Kit Build), RC Scale builder (Balsa USA Kits) and RC Groups has construction threads. You may want to start a construction thread on this site forum (Kit Build). I always do a construction thread when I build a kit. I fly and build 1/4 scale BUSA WW 1 airplanes and I attend several Dawn Patrol events around the country. Seems like I see a Taube at most all of them, they look like great flyers. I use RC Scale Builder (RCSB), because there are more like minded members who offer advice and helpful comments on my build. You may want to check out some of my builds on RCSB, here are some, BUSA Fokker D-VII (2), BUSA Sopwith Pup,BUSA Spad XIII. My threads are listed as builder jwrich.
Again Welcome, we have many Brothers who will offer help and advice went needed, just ask.
It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.
