I would guess the 1/3 Pup is and will always be the biggest seller in 1/3 size.. Heaven knows there are a lot of them sold over the years.
The 1/4 size? I would guess the D7 has a shot at it, I am not even sure which 1/4 WW1 kit is their first?
It would be interesting to know the BUSA kit sells figures ,from the past, and currently.. Just to see how many builders are still out there. I always wonder for every guy that flies in a club.. How many builder/fliers are out there flying from farms,private air fields and old dirt roads?
I would love to know how many UNBUILT Busa kits are out there on shelves as well...

I have about 6 unbuilt waiting. I have a Phaeton II, 2 Phaeton 90, a 1/4 Cub, a 1/3 Der Jager, a Super Stick 60, and a Stick 40 Plus. I also have a Stick 40 plus, and a Super Stick 60 almost finished. And I have a Phaeton II built (radio system removed) that I've flown in the past.
This is just my BUSA kits, I have plenty of other kits built and unbuilt in my workroom.

At the moment, I have just one BUSA kit, waiting to be built, the Smoothie XL.
I built a VECO Smoothie in the early 60s. I plan to re-create the color scheme on the enlarged RC version.

I have a 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup and a 1/4 scale Fokker D-VII kit on the shelf waiting to be built. I am flying 1/4 Pup, 1/4 Fokker D-VII, 1/4 Spad XIII, 1/4 Cub and building a 1/4 Fokker Dr-1. Over the years, beginning in the early 80's, I have built several BUSA kits. 40 size Smoothies (4), 1/3 scale Fly Baby Biplane, 40 Phaeton biplane, 1/4 Cubs (2), 1/4 scale Pups (2), Fokker D-VII's(2) and a 1/4 scale Spad X-III. In 81, I got an assignment to Germany, I must have thought I was going to the end of the modeling world. I ordered a lots of balsa wood & lite ply, music wire and several of their 40 size plans. Boy was I wrong, the activity in Europe was great and the base had a RC Club. I still have the plans and some of the balsa wood today. I have posted pictures most of my planes so I don't need to do them again. Balsa USA has a great following around the world. Nice people to deal with, very helpful.

The Triplane has been on my to do list for years but the Camel is mighty tempting. The 1/4 scale kits tend to be the biggest practical size for me. Along with the Nieuport, I've also had the Bristol Monoplane and the Force One.

The more I think of it.. I bet the 1/4 DR1 is the top selling WW1 in 1/4 scale.
mgnostic.. if you build the Camel just remember to make some lite ply rib doublers in that lower center wing section to hold the landing gear block...And good shear webbing..
Sometimes I think a smart idea for this thread would be to have a running list of the places on the WW1 kits that can use an extra gusset or piece of lite ply.. Some new builders don't realize when they build that a place might need some extra bracing.

I did just that with my Nieuport 17. It has been some years ago but my memory tells me that after reading the suggestion in the instruction manual that the Nieuport be flown gently I swapped out stronger spar material and added extra shear webs. The horizontal stabilizer struts also needed beefing up a couple of times.

In our club we have approx 23 WWI BUSA planes and only 5 duplications.
Sizes are from 1/4 scale to one 1/3 scale and 3 are BUSA blown up, 2 40%
and one 50%. Out of the 23, all are built except 5. The WWI planes have
really taken off (taken off ??) in our club.

Rickj, just out of curiosity which planes did they blow up to 40 % and 50% ?
Believe it or not my club has a similar amount of WW1 in the hangars.. Some of us more guilty than others !
The times we fly together in a group has made several non builders start looking to buy used 1/4 scale fighters.. or get someone else to build for them.
We have a good representation in the club of all the biplanes.. but quite a few DR1's...

Long time since I bought my 1/3 scale Cub, built the fuselage years ago, jets overtook the build. Back on the case, just done the tail surfaces, wings next. Power will be my OS Pegasus 320.If it flies as well as my old 1/4 scale Cub it will be a delight!

SOPWTIH PUP for Life!
I owned a 1/4 scale SOPWITH pup BUSA with a Genoa 20 gas engine about 13 years ago. I am just getting back to it now that I am retired from the Navy and if anyone has any kits or completed Sopwith Pups they would like to part with please let me know. Thank you.

mwallace, you should check the classified pages on this site and RC Groups. Sometimes people list planes like you want for sale. Shipping is a problem for completed models, you have to pick them up. Good luck finding a Pup. You may have to build one, the are one of the easier planes to build.

The Pup kit is not that hard to build, the instructions are very good and easy to follow. I would suggest you do a building thread on one of the forums. This site, RCU, is free to list your construction thread. Also rcscalebuilder.com is the best site to do your building thread, in my opinion. Membership is $20.00 a year, which the best 20 bucks you will spend in the hobby. You will get more help on RC scale builder than RCU. You can read through my Pup construction thread on rcscalebuilder.com, forums, Balsa USA kits section, page 5, my build is listed as "BUSA 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup build" by jwrich. I built 2 Pups at the same time. You can read through the pages and see how other modelers are quick to help.

Good evening folks! The only Balsa USA kit that I have waiting to be built is the 40 size Smoothie. I have hopes to build a Balsa USA WWI kit, just haven't decided which one to start with and then let go of the money. I need a WWI to go to some Dawn Patrol events.

Well, back to my 1/3 Cub. Left wing built and what a pleasure it was. Everything fitted perfectly and build time, using CA was very short. Balsa grade was just what I would have selected!
Right wing ring next and then the scale ailerons.
Then to tackle silver soldering the landing gear!

Right wing and scale ailerons now done, everything fitted perfectly and build a total pleasure.
Delighted to to find all steel fittings for wing already cut and drilled. Huge time saver.
Its to a big aircraft but build time seems no more than a similar smaller aircraft, same number of parts !
Struts next, but I think it will be a Robart ready built landing gear.
Might even add add a tow hook as the OS 240 might just have enough power to tow a light glider !

Not a problem Rick, Hope you are doing well. I bet those three huge planes look great at the field. My 1/4 Camel flies very well ..I am still working on perfect landings..but I am getting closer.

Here’s my 1/4 cub converted to floats at the Shusawp Float Fly in Sal,on Arm, BC.
Covered in fabric and painted. Flies on a G38 but looking to put a 4-stroke Gas on it. Suggestions?
Also have a 1/3 scale Stearman “in the bones” - looking for ideas on how to finish it off. Not sure if I’m going to go Super or not and what engine? Love the Mokis but $$$$$$$.
