I would like to join the Brotherhood. I got a BUSA 1/4 scale pup kit that I will be build this winter with my son. Using a Saito 170r3 for power.

Welcome Steve. You are going to love your Pup and the Saito is more than enough power and sounds great. Have you thought about doing a construction thread here on RCU or RCSB? They can be time consuming but they are very helpful to others and you get advice from builders around the world. You might want to read some of the 1/4 scale Pup threads here on RCU and RCSB (RCSCALEBUILDER.COM), they can be very helpful. We would be able to keep up with your progress and please post plenty pictures, they tell the story.

Again Welcome and Enjoy Your Build.

It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.

In reading the recent posts, I see posts about their BUSA Planes,( PaulD, B.C. and David Gladwin, U.K.). Did you guys want to become members of the brotherhood? You didn't ask but was that your intent.

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome into the Brotherhood. The engine is nice but its about 1 1/2 inches to long from the back of the mount to the back of the prop. I'll have to move the firewall or do something to get it to fit.
Rich,
I might do a build thread or just post updates in this thread. I have been reading other threads.

That is not head to do, depending on where thew carb is located. I have seen others with the DLE type engine done with little problems. Keep us posted

Depending on the balance of that model..with that engine.. you might even want to bring the fuselage out an inch and leave the firewall where it is... Save some possible weight. I have not built the 1/4 Pup and not sure what your balance situation will be with that motor.

Not sure how I became a member but glad I did !

My previuos BUSA was my 1/4 scale Cub which was a peach with its OS Gemini 160, 100 hours in the air! My neighbours complained when I STOPPED flying it from my garden, they loved to see it pottering around in the evening. ( Sadly it crashed after a bizarre radio problem )

My new BUSA is a 1/3 scale Cub with a Pegasus 320, almost complete.

Nice thing about this group is there is none of the BS as on the jets column ( almost given up on that ).

Hope you join and enjoy!

David

BUSA # 97 .

Sure, let’s do it!

1/4 Cub, 1/3 Spacewalker (getting painted) 1/3 Stearman (needs finishing) and Northstar (still in the box) - I think I’m invested!

Welcome, Paul, happy to have you as a Brother. Your Cub looks great on the water. I have been flying my Cub at least 11 years, it has a G-38 also.

Here is my Cub

Happy Flyin

Been out of the hobby for years. Recently retired and want to fly again! Don't have Balsa USA kit yet but, plan on building the Stick 40 Plus to get back in the game. Sign me up for membership!

Waldo, Love to have you as a brother. I trained several guys to fly when I was stationed in Germany. The Balsa USA Stick 40 was the quickest and cheapest way to get them in the air and soon flying on their own. All you need to do is post a picture of your building of the plane or finished as soon as possible. Posting picture of your BUSA Plane has been a requirement from the beginning. Congratulations on your retirement. Hope to hear from you soon.

Take Care

I am really surprised BUSA never offered a bigger version of the stick 40...

Default Stick 40 and Stick 120FS

I have 2 of the Stick 40 from BUSA. One has an OS 40 Surpass and the other has a Saito 45 that has been modified with a 50 cam. They are planes you can fly while siting in a lawn chair. I liked them so much I made a scaled up version with a ASP 120 FS. I provided BUSA with the CAD files for the ribs and they did all the laser cutting for me. With all of them I use a flap/aileron mix. With a slight breeze I can get the 120 version to sit still in the air with the flap down mode. The engine on the FS120 version has been converted to gas with an RCEX unit by a good friend. It will be the spring till I get to fly it on gas.

Pete, you didn't ask, but I think you are a Brother, You now a member of the Balsa USA Brotherhood #160. I like Sticks, the are fun & laid back easy to fly. What is the wing span of the big Stick? Where is Cross Plains, we have kids & grand kids in College Station. We visit couple time a year, it's not far from Bomber Field.
Welcome to the Hood

Default BUSA stick

Hi Rich
The wingspan is just over 8 feet. The cord is 19 inches. Everything was scaled up about 1.85X to use balsa for each wing half that was 4 foot long. The tips add a little length to make it just over 8 feet. I used strip ailerons just for simplicity. The landing gear is fiberglass, I bought it at a swap meet for $2. It will fly all day at less than 1/4 throttle. I have had flights over 45 minutes while sitting in a lawn chair. It is a very relaxed flyer with no bad habits. I like flying it in a light wind to see if I can get it to stand still in the air. So far I have not got it to stall. The ASP FS 120 is more than enough power. So the power loss on the engine being converted to gas is not a problem. I did the ribs in Delta CAD and sent the files to BUSA. They did a beautiful job of laser cutting them. I would use them again for laser cutting parts. All of the wood came from BUSA except the two booms that are made from poplar that I cut from Home Depot wood. This was a very simple build. I attached pics from construction.

In my mind I want to scale one down for a FS30 sometime. Too many projects in line right now for that.

I live out in the country with my own flying field. I get to fly a lot. I like planes that I can fly while sitting in a lawn chair with a cold drink and my old music playing at times. The BUSA stick is perfect for that if not over powered. The 40 size flies very nice with a FS engine. On my oldest one with a FS 40 Surpass I have almost worn the wheels out from flying it so much.

Cross Plains is about a two and a half hours drive south west of Dallas.

Thanks for letting me be 160 of this group.

Pete

Thanks Pete for the quick response. With just a little modification to the front, you mount a 20 -26 cc engine as well. The low cost to build this giant size airplane would be great for anyone wanting to try giant scale flying.

just bought a Balsa Usa sopwith Pup 1/4 scale couple of things I would like to know 1. would A converted homelite 25cc be to much weight in the nose I would rather use a heavy engine then lead weight. 2. Is there a build thread. I have built several kit over my years starting in1970 from control line up to rc the last one I built was a super decathlon used a 40cc engine thanks Michael wood

A 25cc conversion is not going to give you much power, If I recall the homelites wern't the strongest of the conversion motors. However I am not sure they were the weakest conversions. I would guess at most it would be powered like a G23 motor.
As to weight , by no means will it be to heavy. You will probably be adding nose weight.

Michael, I am sure you can find a Pup build here on RCU, just go to search and type in 1/4 scale Balsa USA Sopwith Pup build. RC Scale Builder is another great site to find help and the forum has many building topics that is very helpful and interesting reading. RCSB (www.rcscalebuilder.com) is the best site for building RC airplanes. I have several construction threads in the Balsa USA section. I have a thread on building the Balsa USA 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup. I built 2 at the same time for myself and a friend. Go to RCSB, then forums, kits section, Balsa USA section, then page 5, my build is "BUSA 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup Build" by jwrich. I did not do a full detailed construction build, but see high-lites of the build. Two kits built to maiden flight July 8,08 to Jan 20, 09. As with most scale models they are never finished as the 2010 picture shows. There is another build by Flyboy49 "1/4 scale BUSA Sopwith Pup" same Balsa USA; section, Page 4 his build more detailed.

Michael, the Zenoah 23 and 26 is all the power this airplane need. I am not sure about the Homelite engine, but I would think it would fly it well. Weight is not a problem, you do need a lot of weight up front. If you have any questions just ask.

Here are some pictures of my Pup. By the way it is still flying and will fly at our New Years annual club Fun Fly.
Rich

If I can help just ask, would you like to join the Balsa USA Brotherhood?

Hi Michael,
I've been flying my N-17 with a Homelite 25cc engine for a number of years. You won't be flying 3-D with a Homelite but the power is adequate. I don't have any problem with big fat loops or hammerheads from level flight. My Homelite is mounted inverted and with the exception of the spark plug boot fits within the cowling. With the aluminum cowl from Busa the magneto coil is a very tight fit with my engine mounted on a flat plate of 1/8 inch aluminum. A note about props. My Homelite is no speed demon when it come to RPMs. Aside from trimming the fins off the flywheel and adding an exhaust diverter ( calling it a muffler would be generous) mine is a stock case and cylinder. I fly with an 18-10 Master Airscrew prop. I haven't been exhaustive in my research because this one works well. Thinking that it might unload the engine and gain some RPMs I tried an 18-8 prop. The only result was that the airplane flew much slower. My results with the Homelite is that it performs better lugging a lot of pitch rather than trying to spin lots of RPM. You mileage may very. You can hand start a Homelite but I don't recommend it unless you just want the exercise. A standard electric starter will do the job if you have a fresh fully charged battery. I'm happiest using a starter cup mounted on a cordless drill. I converted my Homelite because when I bought the airplane I could barely afford the kit and a purpose made motor would have been beyond my means. It has worked well enough that the airplane is fun to fly and I have never felt any need to change it up.

thanks my homelite is converted to electronic ignition got the kit today and still gathering parts before I start to build it the reason I wanted to use the homelite is for nose weight don't want to add 4# of lead to the nose what was your final weight and how much weight did you add

It's been a long time since I checked but I would say the weight was something around 13 pounds. The nose weight is a Lyman ingot mounted on the front of the firewall, so probably between 12 and 16 ounces. The relatively dense MAS prop also adds some nose weight. It is definitely heavier than a wood prop. Electronic ignition has its advantages. Aside from a hotter spark that allows for easier starting you can also set the ignition for optimum advance. The stock ignition is slightly retarded from optimum for easier starting at the cost of some RPMs at the top end. When I did my conversion there were even people who would cut a new keyway in the fly wheel to advance the timing. I think 28 degrees total advance was considered optimum but you should check that figure. I had to replace the diaphragms in the carb this spring (normal maintenance) but the Homelight has proven to be very durable. Mine was harvested from a yard sale weed eater. Models of WWI airplanes, especially rotary powered planes tend to benefit from mounting all of the internals as far forward as possible. Most of the BUSA planes have a way deeper cowl than true scale to accommodate the engine. This usually helps in terms of balance. At 13+ pounds ( call it 14 with a full tank of gas) the wing loading is still light. Lots of lift equals lots of drag. I've hears it said of other WWI planes and it is true for my N-17 and the Proctor Fokker Triplane that preceded it that you need to keep a little power on during the landing approach.
