Tony I'm in, may help me decide what to do with this Polen mess I have. I went over the first one but you have my attention on this one so keep it simple, "oh yeah", as if you do anything simple. Go easy on the hanger rash on the 47 while you hammer this one, ha ha.

This will be a fun build being I did it once before and I have a wealth of new ideas and techniques to use. The P-47 will still get worked on but this build will rejuvenate me. Working with foam and fiberglass is a nice break from built up balsa.

The urge to go with retractable gear keeps coming up but as you say "keep it simple" I will go with the fixed gear. Things like landing lights and nav lights may be applied.

As I enter my fith flying (and building season) I have come to the conclusion that I am a builder and flyer of highly modified scale planes. I just cant get excited about flying, or building anything less. I went threw a phase of building kits and flying ARF kits, now all my ARF kits are gone with exception to my 100cc Sbach. So I'm plane less right now and really need this bird.

I have most of the system worked out and how I will go about it. I will need to order some wood as soon as I get the kit. Most of what I need can be purchased at my LHS. I prefer to do this because I can pick threw the lumber. I used 6" 3/32"x 42" sheeting last time so this can be picked up or ordered at my LHS. All the light micro ply and birch ply I can get there too. Carbon fiber will be used in some areas, this kit only needs 3 formers, a tank and battery deck, along with a servo tray. I'm hoping the kit comes next week, I know Greg has been working on it.

Mornin tony. If you want to get your balsa and ply for about 1/4 the price, check out www.balsawoodinc.com. There wonderfull and professional and have great service, they just won't make you custom sizes. I already tried. Just for a comparison, a piece of 1/8 x48 x 12 5 ply birch at my LHS is about $40, there it's $14 or 15. Just a thought. And don't worry about them being shady, I'll vouch for em.

You can however, for something like two dollars, request different densities. Like soft, ot hard balsa.

Thanks guys, at my LHS I can order 30- 6" x42" and pick threw them taking only what I like, I'm the same way when I get framing lumber for my jobs, I like to pick my own. I will check out the links for my block balsa. Hobby lobby use to Cary a lot of block balsa but not as much these days. I'm figuring about $150-$200 in materials needed.

Hey, seeing that you mentioned hobby lobby, do they have stuff we like there? I looked real quick on the website, but only saw girly craft crap.. Reason for asking, there putting one in about 1/16 th of a mile from me. I can see it in the winter with no leaves on the trees. I'm hoping they have some stuff there for me.

For some block sizes they do, if you need it now kind of thing, otherwise there wood is crap. I only go there if the HS doesn't have what I need, they are in the same complex. They do have a good selection of K&S products like clear plastics and sheet metals.

As soon as I get the kit I will put a list together, but it will be a list of a custom build, you may go in a different direction.

I have been trying to find a clear canopy. My options are to cut the fiberglass one off and have a clear one made, or find a substitute.
I am looking at a 1/5 P-47 bubble canopy. I can make that work. One thing about a chipmunk is that you can do whatever you want with it, there is no standard. Being the super chipmunk is built from a trainer chipmunk. I will be doing a few modifications myself. I want to make the ailerons and the ruder a bit bigger. The noes will be a bit longer then the first one. So using a none traditional bubble canopy would be fine.

Sheeting will be 3/32x6"x42" -18 of those.

LE facing will be 1-1/2x1/8"x 42" -2 of them.

LE will be from a TFGS P-47

wing tips will be determined when I see the plans.

TE of the wing will be 1-1/2x1/8"x42" - 2

LE of ailerons and flaps will be 1"x2"

the rest I can get at my LHS

Also there is a trainer canopy out there for a 1/5 chipmunk from FGS so might look at that too.

Opened the box up and all is good. I am starting on the wing, need to order my wood so I am putting a list together tonight.
I did a rough layout to see what I need and to get ready to install the servo wire sleeves and the gear blocks.

I have all I need for the tail feathers so I will get on them while I wait on wood, this should be a quick build.

I haven't heard a lot about G&L kits, but the quality must be pretty good for you to build another.

I only know about this kit but I have heard good things about his other kits, they are all builders short kits. The glass work is really good and the foam cors are good too.

I ordered my wood from BUSA

Here is the list. This is only for the wing and the tail feathers tips The rest I have.

Before I start to cut in the items I need to I will put together my main gear blocks. I am using some extra parts from my Sierra gear on my P-47. The Robart struts I am getting are 5/8" and the mounting block from Sierra is the same. So all I need is some angle aluminum and we are good. Then I will cut the area of the gear out and face it with 1/4" ply. The servo wires will get a channel and maybe a paper tube.

I can also sheet the ruder and stab.

I was digging threw some junk boxes and found an unused canopy from my P-47. I think this can work, it wont be a traditional chippy canopy but I can make this work and it will look cool.

I will have to cut the canopy off, then reform the fuselage to fill in so I can lay the new canopy on it. This will have to be done regardless of any clear canopy that will be used.

I think we have a plan.

On the docket for tomorrow will be to make the gear mounts, install the bulkhead ply for the gear and to cut the trench for the servo wiers. That will make the wing ready for sheeting. I also may cut the canopy free and start to fill in the fuselage around the canopy, going to be 20+ wind this weekend so going for a building marothon
